...I was beginning to think I?d never get to Bodrum. As a woman on her own I won?t go anywhere unless I speak enough of the language to look after myself, and Turkish was proving just awful. It bears no relationship at all to any European language, the grammatical rules are complex and totally unfamiliar. Other linguists will raise an eyebrow when I tell them there are no verbs ?to be? and ?to have?. So how would you say, for example, ?I have two children? ? It goes ?twochildrenaretome?, ?ikicocuklarim?, all one word, and that?s the easy part. At least pronunciation is no problem. Where would I stay ? This was Asia, and a Muslim country, and my usual get-there-and-find-a cheap-place-to kip routine might not be sensible. Gumbet - Bodrum

Advantages: Lively, nice weather, good selection of restaurants
Disadvantages: Beach, getting quite expensive

...I have been to Gumbet many times as my husband is Turkish and has a shop there. Gumbet is only about a 5-10 minutes drive from Bodrum.It's a lively little place with plenty of shops, restaurants, bars and discos. The one thing I didnt like about Gumbet was the beach. It is a man-made beach and the sand is more like gravel. It hurts your feet to walk on it. My advice would be to get on a dolmus (bus) to Bitez it only takes about 10 minutes to get there and the beach is much nicer! One the other hand Gumbet has a lot of watersports to keep you busy. Two of the nicest hotels I have stayed in would probably be The Sami Plaza and Hotel Baba, they are both on the main street in Gumbet and they back onto the beach so the location is good.   Bodrum - One to remember!

Advantages: Colourful, lively and busy
Disadvantages: Parts can be hilly for the less abled

Bodrum a place of contrasts

Advantages: Plenty to see, good choice of restaurants, very friendly people
Disadvantages: Not much for younger children

...We were a bit apprehensive about going back to Turkey having been to Marmaris a couple of years ago, and finding it heavy going, especially the persistance of the street and market sellers. A colleague told me that Bodrum was different so we thought we'd take the gamble. And "was it worth it" I hear you ask, and absolutely is the answer. Bodrum is a place of contrasts. My experience in Bodrum....and Gumbet (Turkey)

Advantages: Clean, great public transport
Disadvantages: Rubbish fakes

...I wasn't exactly delighted when finding out I had to take an educational trip to Turkey, I instantly thought ''That is not my cup of tea!'' As I'm sure you know, Turkey is well known for its pervy men, fakes, and being a very popular place for chavs to take their holidays! Well 1- I was not interested in meeting any men wanting a British passport 2- I hate fakes and 3- I'm sorry..but some chavs REALLY get on my nerves! But I thought...''No..just go! You might be surprised'' So I landed in Bodrum airport in the first week of May 2006. We drove for an hour to arrive in Gumbet, it was dark and the journey wasn't exactly great, the roads are crap over there..very bumpy! All I could see was these shanty little white houses along the side of the road, I wasn't overjoyed. Gumbet itself was rubbish. Every shop was a fake goods shop...

Salmakis Hotel-Bodrum ****

Advantages: Huge, Clean, Nice food, Private Beach, Nice rooms....
Disadvantages: Reception Bar is High priced, you can get lost easily.

...I have been on the Gulet (boat) holidays twice in the last three months. We booked through Thomas Cook who use Salmakis boats. On the last day of the holiday, you are taken to the Salmakis hotel. I never though the Salmakis would be so big. You go down a steep hill to get to the reception so walking back to Bodrum is not advisable. Although if you go down to the beach front, there are water taxis to take you to bodrum. These cost 2.50 lira each and take about 5 minutes. If you would rarther get a real taxi, these cost 5 euro to bodrum. The staff behind reception speak a little english so there shouldn't be a problem checking-in. The bar in reception is not advised as the prices are pretty high. If you do get anything from there, they put it on a bill which had to be paid before you leave the bar. Bodrum Airport most expensive place on Earth

Advantages: its a way out of the country

...Bodrum Airport, Well can I say anything good about Bodrum Airport? In a word NO, what a place, after the end to a relatively dismal holiday we had to finish of in the Airport from hell. Bodrum airport is truly expensive!!

Advantages: You are possibly on holiday

...Fantastic trip to Turkey, flight was delayed two hours on return to Leeds/Bradford airport but nothing could have prepared me for how expensive Bodrum airport really was. I assumed food would be expensive, a lot of airports generally are - I bought five small slices of pizza each with a small portion of chips, I could not believe this came to around £50, I couldn't tell you if they tasted nice as my throat was too dry with the shock!! This is simply daylight robbery to families who have children and no choice but to feed their kids something warm at the airport. Expensive is one thing but this is simply taking advantage of tourists. Don't even get me started on the state of the toilets!!...

Bodrum and Gumbet

Advantages: Too many to mention
Disadvantages: None that I can think of

...After holidaying in Turkey for the second time in nine months I have to say the resorts of Bodrum and Gumbet are definitely second to none. Its cheap, very cheerful and everyone we encountered was so nice. The pubs are great, the clubs are great, the hotels I have experienced are basic but very clean and the weather is lovely, but extremely hot - be warned. I would recomend Turkey to anyone but specifically Gumbet/Bodrum if you are up for a wild time!!I will definitely be returning at some time in the near future....

Bodrum Airport Review.

Advantages: gets you into Tukey for Holiday
Disadvantages: poorly set up and managed.

...Having passed through Bodrum airport 6 times in the last 2.5 years I have to write only 1 story for all my experiences. Arriving at 3am you are expected to politely que to pay your entry fee ?10 for me and £10 for U.K. $45 if your canadian? (not exactly fair!) and my 4 month old daughter ?10 (disgraceful in my view) two persons with not a sign of a smile or a hello gladly collect your money, and place a visa in your passport.( average que time 30mins if you are lucky). then on to the passport officer another friendly face, if your lucky you might get through in15mins maybe 30. Dont mind the 3 other officers( watching you walk past) as 2 maybe 3 only do the work.
