Bombay Mix - When a simple crisp just won't do!

Advantages: Makes a change from crisps

...I was wandering around my local Sainsbury's this morning, buying the ingredients for my packed lunch. Now I'm one of those people for whom a lunchtime sandwich just isn't complete without a crunchy, usually potato based, snack to have alongside. So whilst perusing the heavily laden shelves of the crisps and snacks aisle my eye was caught by the pink and purple packaging of Sainsbury's own brand of Bombay Mix. Now for the snack historians amongst you Bombay Mix is an Indian snack with the traditional name of chiwda or chevda, or even in Bangladesh chanachur. Traditionally the snack would consist of dried pieces of lentils, peanuts, corn, chickpeas, flaked rice, fried onion and gram flour noodles. Salaam Bombay !

Advantages: A magical city of contrasts, that is coping inspite of all odds
Disadvantages: There are many

...met and merged. Bombay was central; all rivers flowed into its human sea. It was an ocean of stories, we were all its narrators, and everybody talked at once. What magic was stirred into that insaan-soup (the soup of humanity), what harmony emerged from that cacophony! This is a city that belongs to nobody but everyone".. It definitely takes a lot more than a few bombs to break the spirit of Bombay, and, Bombay is no stranger to terror strikes, it has been constantly at the receiving end since many years. I have visited Bombay recently after the terror attacks and surprisingly , things are back to normal except that , now there is a memorial for all those who were killed on 26/11 , and every single visitor to the city feels duty bound to pay homage to the departed souls , thats the least one can do ! Ring sting potatoes

Advantages: An easy way to make Bombay potatoes, very tasty, cheap and great value for money
Disadvantages: None for me

...In my opinion Bombay potatoes are the best side dish to accompany a curry however, with the credit crunch biting at the end of last year and turning to a full blown recession I have found that the trips to the local curry house have cut right back to virtually non existent. In the box you get spinach Pilau rice, a chicken curry dish which i think is the same sort of things as chicken tikka masala. You also get a naan bread and some onion bhajis. The meal can made in the microwave, but through personal experience in every curry i have bought from the supermarker, i always oven cook. It is always worth the extra 40 mins. Mixed Feelings

...I have always liked the actress Brenda Blethyn - ever since I first remember seeing her in "Chance in a Million" a sitcom she starred in with Simon Callow on Channel 4 in the 80s. There was something incredibly endearing about her in that show, and that charm seems to be an integral part of her persona, to my mind anyway - even when she is portraying less than sympathetic characters. Browsing the books in Tesco one day I came across "Mixed Fancies", Blethyn's memoir, and I immediately decided I wanted to read more about the girl born Brenda Bottle in Ramsgate.
