Bonsai the plant on pot(!)

Advantages: Look gorgeous
Disadvantages: bring lots of bugs increase biodiversity on your window ledge

...Bonsai trees are special miniture trees that grow indoors (usually) in pots. Bonsai is japanese for 'potted plant' and originated in China. they are absolutely gorgeous, the idea of having an entire tree on your windowsil amazes me till today, they grow like trees for years and years, there are several styles and types of bonsai: The formal upright style, or Chokkan, is just as the name suggests, and is characterized by a straight, upright, tapering trunk. The trunk and branches of the informal upright, or Moyogi, may incorporate pronounced bends and curves, but the apex of the informal upright is always located directly over the roots. Mr Myagi from the movie Karate Kid was the first person to get me interested in Bonsai trees. In the movie he talks about how precious they are and how they needed to be treated carefully, and can...

I love Bonsai Trees

Advantages: Fun
Disadvantages: None

...You probably think I'm weird....but wait!! So, Bonsai trees, I love em. Well actually I've only got one, so I'm no kind of expert on the matter but it does make a good houseplant. I've had it for a while now and haven't managed to kill it (so they must be robust) and it adds a bit (ok, the only bit) of colour to my room. Bonsai trees are like no other plant in your house, and its not just the fact that they are trees that makes them different. I don't know what it is about them that I like, but ever since I saw the Karate Kid movie as a kid I wanted one. Be it their mysterious nature, their rugged looks or oriental connections most people find them nice to look at, and being not all that common many people take an interest in them, asking what they are etc. There are loads of different types of bonsai tree you can buy, and they...

Create Your Own Bonsai

Advantages: Easy to care for
Disadvantages: Get someone to water them while you're on holiday!

...Create your own bonsai using nursery stock. Photos at: www.one2go.co.uk As there hasn?t been much said about bonsai, I?d like to show how easy it is to create your own bonsai, from a plant bought from a nursery or garden centre. I chose Taxus baccata adpressa ?Variegata,? which is a long-winded Latin way of saying Golden Variegated Yew. I bought this conifer from a garden centre last May and took photos of the various stages of creation, and I?ve included a picture of how it looks today. Firstly, bonsai can be created from any suitable variety of tree (suitable means that the leaves and growth habit should be not too large or vigorous ? don?t attempt to bonsai a Buddleia, for example! ? you?d be fighting nature instead of working with it). The idea that it takes years to make a bonsai, or that it?s an extremely skilled...

Mother Nature at its Best!

Advantages: It will add a bit of the orient to your home
Disadvantages: delicate

...These plants are absolutly stunning, they are very delicate and even blossom in perfect conditions. Lidls at the moment are selling very cheap bonsai trees and are Carmona or Fukien tea types . These are very nice and do blossom and very hardy . I would say to anyone thinking of getting one to go for it ! because its so rewarding to keep a plant which slowly grows due to you care into something of true beauty. The basics are keeping them in light and airy conditions with watering every week as you would do with house plants. Also feeding every two weeks and before you know it you have a tree which has so much uniqueness and oriental feel to it that you will be over the moon . You will see one the internet and in shops with bonsai or even BNQ'S that you are told to buy bonsai special food , i want to tell you that its rubbish go out to...

B is for Bonsai...

Advantages: See Op
Disadvantages: See Op

...Wow, that could be the title of a Murder She Wrote film, or maybe Columbo... Sorry, back to the point - Bonsai Trees. Ever owned one? Ever kept it alive? Personally, I feel I have enough knowledge to competantly write an op on bonsai trees, having attempted to keep them for the past eight years. Truth be told, I can't keep them alive to save my life. Maybe I'm just not 'horticultararly minded', or maybe they really are bloody difficult to keep, please let me know! ** WHAT IS A BONSAI TREE? ** For those of you who aren't familiar with the term bonsai tree, it's basically the oriental art of growing a tree that should be 30' tall in a small pot, and restricting it's growth to about 6" tall, by regularly pruning the tree and it's rootball, watering with just the right amount of water at just the right time of day...

Focus: Squint your eyes

Advantages: Reliability, style and cost effective
Disadvantages: lots of them on the road!!!

...Ford really outdone themselves when they produced the Ford Focus. I've now had two years experience in driving my Focus and would highly reccommend the car to anyone. There are so many good points to mention about this car. First of all, it looks good even as standard, and if you are looking for a car to spruce up with spoilers and bodykits and tints etc, then the Focus really is something of a Bonsai tree...imagine how it looks in your head and start pruning. I have never had a single problem with the Focus and its now nearly three years old. Actually i tell a lie, the rubber from the window wiper came loose the other day! But for the £3 it cost to get the new blade i'm not complaining!!! It has enough bite under the bonnett to keep most drivers satisfied. Its certainly not the quickest but it can fairly shift in the lower gears...

A cornish gem of an attraction just outside Newquay

Advantages: Japanese Zen, Bonsai,
Disadvantages: Would've been better when dry!

...We visited this year in July 2009 when on holiday in Newquay. I've only ever seen bits of Japanese gardens in the UK in parts of garden displays and never a full pure Japanese garden. It's a beautiful peaceful tranquil space where you could spend hours walking round, sitting, admiring the beautiful scenery and plants. I took over 100 photos while I was in the garden; they are on my website if anyone is interested. The Japanese Garden and Bonsai Nursery is signposted from the A3059, the main road into Newquay from the A30. It's just outside the village of St Magwan, and has a car park for at least 20 cars. You enter into the shop, which itself is amazing, lots of wooden carved dragons, and stones, books on Japanese culture, as well as Bonsai! It's open everyday 10am till 6pm and is £3.50 for adults and £1.50 for children to enter...

Swingin' TY Town!

Advantages: cute, soft
Disadvantages: retired

...little beans inside him, which can be a choking hazard so not suitable for very young children. Also he is quite delicate so I would not put him in the washing machine! If you did, Bonzai may be splatted and ripped everywhere! Poem: Each TY comes with a poem. It can be found inside a little cardboard red tag in the shape of a heart which is attached to their ear. Bonzai's reads... I am Bonsai the chimpanzee I like to swing from tree to tree Come with me and we will play Chatting in the trees all day! Its quite a sweet little poem, and although not the best I've read, is still very cute and unique to the chimpanzee! Purchasing: Bonzai is unfortunately retired. This means that the TY company no longer manufacture him to be sold in shops. However you may be able to find him in charity shops or auction sites such as eBay. Though he may be...

Soap Nuts - Use them to clean everything

Advantages: Renewable, sustainable and natural, incredibly versatile
Disadvantages: not great on dazzling whites

...I love soap nuts! I even grew my own mini soap nut tree and bonsai'd it. I've found so many uses fro these leathery berries and the solution you can make by simmering them gently in water. They can be used to wash pretty much anything. I use them to wash me, my kids, our clothes, car, pets, floors, windows and surfaces. The solution is handiest in a spray bottle and used like a conventional surface cleaning spray, adding in a few drops of tea tree for an anti bacterial edge. The solution has also kept the greenfly off my roses this summer and the blackfly off my beans. An all round brilliant *green* product that I would recommend anyone to try. They are a bit rubbish at getting white clothes dazzling white though so I'd have ecover laundry bleach on hand too....
