A quirky drama with moments of startling originality, Life: Season One concerns Charlie Crews (Damian Lewis of Band of Brothers), a cop who spent 12 years in federal prison for murders he did not commit. Exonerated by DNA evidence, Charlie receives a multimillion-dollar settlement for his troubles and returns to his old job, though now as a detective. Cleared of the crime, Charlie still faces skepticism from his law enforcement brethren and the impatience of a new partner, Dani Reese (Sarah Shahi), a former drug addict squeezed by her superior (Robin Weigert) to find reasons to boot Charlie from the force. None of this hostility, however, compares with the terrible time Charlie experienced behind bars, where a former cop is everyone's punching bag. Charlie's sanity, saved by studying Zen methods of non-attachment, remains with him after he is released into a digital world, Charlie has a lot of catching up to do, but it is his post-prison unorthodox manner and tendency to speak without thinking that prove jarring for colleagues and crime witnesses. Still, it is easy to root for the guy and appreciate (non-attachment aside) his fondness for the good life: a mansion, fast cars, beautiful women, and lots of fresh fruit. The pilot episode is a knockout, the kind of show featuring moments one has never seen before, such as a scene in which Charlie is forced to shoot a suspect and then talks him through an almost dream-like death. Subsequent episodes are a little uneven in quality, but the overall package is quite compelling, particularly as Charlie quietly solves the mystery of the murders for which he was blamed. Throughout, Charlie's religious transformation in prison collides with his darker impulses toward possible revenge, making Life a fascinating study in conflict. --Tom Keogh ... less

Audiences were captivated by the women of Wisteria Lane in the first season of Desperate Housewives, the breakout hit from ABC that almost single-handedly lifted the network from its ratings doldrums and brought back the classic TV soap, remixed now with satire, comedy, and mystery. An affectionate yet darkly tinged send-up of suburbia that skirted Twin Peaks territory as much as that of Knots Landing, Desperate Housewives opened with a bang--literally--as perfect-seeming housewife Mary Alice Young (Brenda Strong) went through her picture-perfect day before putting a handgun to her temple and pulling the trigger. Mary Alice's sudden suicide leaves her four closest friends, all housewives of a sort, with a surfeit of grief, a re-examination of their own lives, and a mystery to solve. It also proves to be a catalyst for a seamy study of what goes on inside the finely appointed homes of Wisteria Lane--the tales of which Mary Alice narrates from beyond the grave with a sardonic tone dipped in both honey and arsenic. There's Martha Stewart-perfect Bree (Marcia Cross), who rules her household with an iron fist in a tailor-made garden glove and seems to have it all, until she finds out her husband (Steven Culp) is cheating on her-and has a serious fetish habit to boot. Sultry Gaby (Eva Longoria), the youngest of the set, is a bored trophy wife whose predilection for shopping and clothes are the perfect decoy for her affair with the hunky teenage gardener (Jesse Metcalfe). Former career woman Lynette (Felicity Huffman) is the most stereotypical housewife, raising four (or was it five?) kids and frustrated at using her cutthroat business skills for suburban politics. And daffy Susan (Teri Hatcher), the divorcee looking for love, sees her prospects brighten with the arrival of hunky plumber Mike (James Denton), who has some desperate secrets of his own. And did we mention the neighborhood hussy (Nicollette Sheridan), the snotty busybody (Christine Estabrook), and Mary Alice's increasingly agitated son (Cody Kasch)? It was a fast and wild mix of plot and characters that gave Desperate Housewives the zing that made it a number one hit, as it never got too bogged down in any dilemma before moving on to the next. And though it was neither as hard-hitting nor salacious as it was trumpeted to be, the show nevertheless breathed fresh, funny air into comedy television, for even though it hewed to the hour-long soap format, the content was far more dark comedy than sudsy drama. There were fun bright spots to be had, but the story behind Mary Alice's death--which included drugs, murder, blackmail, secret identities, and vengeance in equal amounts--hovered over all the characters, tingeing the farce with the specter of danger. The show's other source of strength is in its peerless ensemble cast, headed by four perfect leading ladies, all Emmy-worthy. Hatcher received the (deserved) lion's share of praise (and a Golden Globe), but her co-stars-especially the underrated Longoria-matched her scene for scene. And though the mystery of Mary Alice's death was ultimately solved (no Twin Peaks teasing here), it was just the beginning of the troubles on Wisteria Lane, where no life went unexamined for too long. --Mark Englehart, Amazon.com ... less

There appeared to be information overload (splinter group Tok'ra, Earth's second Gate, Machello, endless Apophis encounters), as the finely interwoven threads of alien histories and inter-relationships were developed. The Hills Season 1 [DVD]

Fans of Laguna Beach will love the first season of The Hills, which follows Laguna's Lauren Conrad as she attends fashion school in Los Angeles and works as an intern at Teen Vogue magazine. OK, so that's the premise for this quasi-reality MTV series. But in reality, the show is an excuse to watch pretty young people make out, break up, get back together, and break up some more. The show has more in common with a daytime drama than a documentary; none of the subjects worries too much about paying rent for their glamorous apartments or designer clothes. But when it comes to dating, the Geneva Convention could learn a thing or two about negotiating from these gals. Lauren fans may be dismayed to learn that Jason, the monosyllabic Lothario who cheated on her in the second season of Laguna Beach is back. And instead of going on dates with the thousands of young men who would love to have a pretty blonde on their arms (and get the opportunity to appear on TV to boot!), Lauren allows Jason to get back into her good graces--even though he hasn't matured since high school. Or figured out how to treat a woman. Or learned how to talk better. It's actually heartbreaking watching her struggle with a relationship that we can all see is doomed. Or is it? The season finale ends with the kind of dilemma we all wish we could've faced when we were 19 or 20: spend the summer working in Paris or move into a beach house with your boyfriend and frolic on the beach for three months. Paris? Jason? Hmmmm. You'd think that'd be a no-brainer. Also on hand to offer support are Lauren's friends Heidi and Audrina. The cast always looks chic and freshly made up (even after getting out of bed) and the cameras somehow always manage to be in the right place to capture romantic moments (and drama). It's easy to make fun of this show because of the preposterous setup that this sun-kissed life is reality for a group of kids who don't seem to have to work that hard for their privileged lives. But therein lies the guilty pleasure. We know it's a fantasy created by MTV. And while we would kill for the rocking apartments, cars, and clothes, there is no way most of us would endure being publicly humiliated to get 15 minutes of fame. --Jae-Ha Kim ... less

Lives were upended--and some co-opted--in the fifth and final season of Angel, as the denizens of Angel Investigations found themselves taking on one of their scariest endeavours ever: corporate life. After making a literal deal with the devil (or something distinctly devil-like), Angel (David Boreanaz) moved his team from their crumbling hotel to the high-rise digs of law-firm-from-hell Wolfram & Hart, his reasoning being they could better fight the forces of evil from the inside, and with more resources to boot. Clever maneuvering or easy rationalisation? Not a few members of Angel's team accused him of selling out (as did a number of viewers), but as with most of the show's previous four seasons, Angel somehow took a dubious premise and mined it for gold. And with one core cast member gone (Charisma Carpenter, whose Cordelia was immersed in a deep coma), it seemed as if the show, from within and without, would suddenly fall apart--that is, until Angel's longtime nemesis Spike (James Marsters) showed up, fresh from his sacrificial roasting at the series finale of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Let the vampire games begin! With Buffy off the air, fans flocked to Angel's last season to get their fix of Joss Whedon's "Buffyverse" in any form they could, and the addition of Spike was a shrewd one, albeit not enough to keep the show from getting cancelled. And for the first half of the season, the creative forces behind the show seemed to be toying ruthlessly with the audience. Spike was around, but not entirely corporeal; Angel himself became sullen and withdrawn; and most horrifically, sweetheart scientist Fred (Amy Acker) and former watcher Wesley (Alexis Denisof) underwent traumas that would test even the most devoted viewer. However, just when you'd be about to throw in the towel, things started changing for the better--Spike became a permanent fixture (both in the flesh and on the show), Angel's secret motives were revealed, and the introduction of demon warrior Illyria, who proved to be the show's answer to Buffy's sardonic demon-made-human Anya, was a welcome breath of fresh air. Creatively, Angel also came up with some of its best episodes, including "Smile Time" (where Angel is turned into a puppet--really!) and "You're Welcome" (the show's 100th episode, which marked the bittersweet return of Carpenter's Cordelia). The ending of the series was deliberately ambiguous, and not everyone made it through alive, but in going out kicking, it was a proper sendoff for a show that always fought the good fight. --Mark Englehart ... less

Eastbound and Down - Complete HBO Season 2 [DVD]

Danny McBride's Kenny Powers, the man with the magnificent mullet, returns for a second round of his politically incorrect HBO series. When his Tampa plans fall through, the baseball player-turned-gym teacher spends the next seven episodes killing time in Mexico (the shoot takes place in Puerto Rico). After his sidekick, Aaron (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory's Deep Roy), gives him the boot, he decides to get back in the game, so he joins a local team just as his biggest fan, Stevie (Steve Little), arrives in order to serve as his assistant. Stevie also breaks the news that Kenny's ex-girlfriend is off the market. Fortunately, Vida (Ana de la Reguera), a shapely nightclub singer, helps Kenny to forget his past, though she finds the team owner (Michael Peņa) equally enticing. Unfortunately, Kenny's bad attitude threatens his relationship, his job, and even his friendship with the puppy dog-like Stevie. Just when his antics can't get more tiresome, Kenny reconnects with a long-lost relative (Don Johnson with scraggly extensions), who inspires him to stop running from his problems and face them head on. Then, when he makes peace with a former enemy (Adam Scott) and a major-league scout (Matthew McConaughey), it appears as if his fortunes are about to turn.As with the first season, producers Jody Hill and David Gordon Green handle directorial duties and play to writer-creator McBride's strengths, but the coke-snorting egotist won't be to all tastes. Like the fictional Larry David of Curb Your Enthusiasm--or real-life pitcher John Rocker--he's an equal-opportunity offender, but in a cruder context. And set to a hipper soundtrack, something that also distinguishes the feature-film work of Hill and Green. Oscar nominee John Hawkes (Winter's Bone), who plays Kenny's level-headed brother, makes a repeat appearance for the surprisingly sentimental finale. --Kathleen C. Fennessy ... less

Maturation is a process fraught with insecurity and angst, and Sabrina (Melissa Joan Hart) is experiencing all the normal teenage emotions while simultaneously trying to hide her powers as a witch, and fit in at a normal high school. Imagine her surprise when, on her 17th birthday, Sabrina discovers that on top of her already packed schedule she must somehow find time to study for a test to earn her witch's license. What's worse, her Quizmaster (Alimi Ballard) from the other realm can be counted upon to throw a pop quiz whenever Sabrina least expects it. From mandatory enrollment in witch boot camp to working on the school parade float with her snooty nemesis Libby (Jenna Leigh Green) and joining her class on a field trip to Disneyworld, Sabrina's 17th year yields lots of important lessons about taking responsibility for her actions, nurturing a compassion for others, overcoming jealousy, and identifying the truly important things in her life. Luckily Sabrina's Aunts Hilda (Caroline Rhea) and Zelda (Beth Broderick), talking cat Salem (Nick Bakay), boyfriend Harvey (Nate Richert), and new friend Valerie (Lindsay Sloane) can be counted upon to lend their support and help Sabrina through even the most stressful days. A huge cast of guest stars throughout the 26-episode season include John Ratzenberger as Santa and Johnny Mathis as himself in "Sabrina Claus," Patrick Thomas O'Brien as Cupid in "The Equalizer," and a performance by 10,000 Maniacs in "A River of Candy Corn Runs Through It." On August 10th of the year 2010 the Holy Empire of Britannia began a campaign of conquest, its sights set on Japan. In the span of one month the island nation was conquered. As a dominion of the Empire the newly acquired territory was renamed Area 11. The rights of its citizens were severely limited and an economic depression followed for the Japanese, now known as Elevens. Just as things seemed at their bleakest one man chose to stand up and fight, the masked crusader Zero. Leading his Order of Black Knights, Zero instigated a full scale revolution against Britannia culminating in one final battle, the Black Rebellion. Heavy casualties were seen by both sides but ultimately Britannia stood the victor resulting in Zero's execution. And thus was history written. The year is now 2018. With Zero dead and the remnants of the Black Knights being swept up by the Britannian forces, a forced state of peace settles over Area 11. The rights of the Elevens remain limited but with no one to lead them and the defeat during the Black Rebellion hanging over them, the Japanese people remain under the boot of Britannian oppression with no hope to overcome. ... less
