Boots Soltan Sun Care Lotion - SPF50+
Advantages: High protection and mostly reliable
Disadvantages: Sometimes hard to get just the right amount
...I spent 6 weeks in California this June and July, so went prepared with lots of sun cream as I'm known to burn easily - especially my face, shoulders, and feet. I chose SPF 50+ from the Boots Soltan range, as it was cheaper than the same SPF in other brands (on BOGOFF at the time) and offered the highest SPF available. I also took Boots Soltan After sun with me, but that's a separate review.
~ - ~ Soltan ~ - ~
Soltan is the Boots own brand sun cream and as such is only available from Boots stores. The sun protection products are in yellow/orange bottles and the after sun range is in a 'cooling' blue color. There are both Lotions and Sprays available, and also several variations of the basic sun cream - kids, baby, wasp and insect repellent, extra tanning, and some others. I used the original kind.
The lotion comes in 200ml...

Boots Soltan Self Tan Light
Advantages: nice, streak free tan
Disadvantages: the way Boots kept prompting you to buy their other products through the directions on the can
...Boots Soltan Self Tan Light
Three months I won this in a packet of prizes. Last week, with the good weather (though I like the weather, I don't want skin care so instead of hours of sunbathing and burnt skin, I opted for faking it) I decided I wasn't going to be the palest person on the planet and got to work. I normally use the Piz Buin fake tan and I'm never used mousse before. There's no category for the light mousse so I hope you don't mind me put it in the Medium section.
++Variety, the price and availability ++
There are only two mousses. Soltan Self Tan No Streaks Mousse Light and Soltan Self Tan No Streaks Mousse Medium. Also there's sprays, wipes or lotion in the self-tan range of Boots.
As it's a Boots brand, you can only get it at Boots. It's on special offer so at the moment it's £4.65 instead being £6...

Boots Soltan Suncare
Advantages: easy to apply, absorbs well, good protection
Disadvantages: goes runny in the heat.
...I have always used Soltan sun protection whenever i go abroad as i have got a boots card and have heard that it is one of the only ones with 5 star uva protection. On my recent holiday I took factors 40 and 15 as I was ussure of the weather
The product comes in a bright yellow bottle and I chose the 200ml size, although I am sure you can get a larger size as well. I prefer the squeeze dispenser to the spray as I had difficulty in aiming the spray.
The cream is easily applied and is not too greasy and absorbs easily into the skin. It seems to last even after swimming, as long as you are careful not to towel dry too rigorously! I am extremely pleased to say that I have never once been sun burnt whilst using this product and would not use any other brand.
On a slightly negative note it claims to come with insect repellent, however...

Get a suntan with Soltan
Advantages: Gentle on skin, nice smell, well protecting
Disadvantages: Bit pricey
...I love freebies. A few weeks ago I was in Boots, and whilst I was at the check-out, I was given a pile of about 20 sachets of their ?new? Children?s suntan lotion. Ciao calls this lotion ?Boots Soltan Childrens Sensitive Skin Lotion? however, Boots have re-branded this to ?Soltan Kids?, which is why I guess they were calling it new! Since I was given so many packets of it, I feel that I have had sufficient experience of it to write an op on it ? so here goes!
-=Packaging=-
Since I have the freebie version, my packaging will not be the same as the one you will find on the shelves, but I?ll tell you about it anyway, so that you get a rough idea of what to look for (except it?ll be in a bottle form). I have a small rectangular foil sachet ? the sort of thing that would come free in a magazine. It?s yellowy-orange in colour and says...

Soleil Soltan
Advantages: Stops me from getting sun burnt.
Disadvantages: Very creamy, not easily absorbed.
...I was planning my trip to Australia when I realised I need sun protection lotion. So, I attempted to purchase some around December. Do you know how difficult it is to find this bottle of lotion around Christmas? Next to impossible! I hunted in Boots all over London and finally, I found this SPF 60 bottle at the airport! I mean, surely such lotion would be needed for ski trips?!?
Bottle & Directions
=
What can I say? Its bright orange yellow, in your true standard Boots colour for sun protection. Why sun protection lotion are always encased in bright yellow orange bottles escapes me. I prefer mine in cool blue green bottle, that signifies that the lotion within will keep me cool!
The bottle is half circular with a flip top where instructions are shown on the flat side. The instructions state that one is...

Boots "12 hour" Aftersun lotion
Advantages: Much less peeling, smells okay, absorbs quicky
Disadvantages: just smells like aftersun, bottle gets messy
...*** This isn't actually the Insect Repellent variety, it's a review of the original Aftersun product. I asked Ciao to add a listing for the Aftersun and they told me it existed right here - even though this isn't it!***
Boots Soltan Aftersun lotion - 12 Hour Moisturising Aftersun Lotion
I went on a 6-week trip to California this summer and anticipated needing plenty of Aftersun to put on my sunburn. As it happens the sun cream I used (Boots Soltan SPF 50+) withstood the test and I had very little sunburn, but I still went through plenty of Aftersun.
I chose the Boots Soltan Aftersun lotion mainly because it was the same brand as the sun cream I chose, and because it was on offer at the time.

Keeping the Insects Away?!
Advantages: Good aftersun moisturiser.
Disadvantages: Not great at keeping insects away.
...if the standard moisturiser was a lot cheaper as I was still ravaged to some extent!
- Other Soltan Aftersun Lotions -
Boots sell a range of aftersun lotions:
~ Aftersun balm
~ Aftersun lotion
~ Aftersun lotion with insect repellent
~ Aftersun tan prolonger
~ Aftersun gel with aloe vera
~ Aftersun spray
A good moisturiser for sun-drenched hair but not great at keeping insects away!

Boots - the Store
Advantages: Quality products all under one roof
Disadvantages: None
...Everybody's favourite High Street chemist and beauty store!
The Boots Company PLC is a chain of high street stores known for their pharmacy and beauty/health products. You can find a Boots on just about every high street in Britain. In fact Boots has approximately 1,500 stores in the UK and abroad. This is the thing I like most about it, you are always guaranteed to find a store wherever you are in the country which makes it easy when you need to buy a repeat brand or just need to pop into one quickly because you have left your toothbrush at home on a weekend away.
Boots was founded in Nottingham in 1849 by a gentleman called John Boot, hence the name and turned into a chain by his son Jesse. Boots stores are very easy to spot and recognize on the high street. They include a big blue sign with Boots written on it in cursive white...

Slip Slap Slop
Advantages: Safer way to tan
Disadvantages: Cheaper than named brands but still very expensive
...It's peeing down with rain here today with not a hint of sun in the sky, so there's certainly no need for any sun tan cream. Yet there is nothing quite like the smell of the stuff to evoke happy holiday memories, and thoughts of sunnier climes. I do love having a tan - it makes me look and feel healthier, but I do know it's not good for my skin. I've been using Soltan products for nearly 15 years now and always take several bottles of varying factors away on holiday with me. As it's made and manufactured solely by Boots, it works out a little bit cheaper than better known brands of sun care products like Piz Buin or Ambre Solaire. And the best thing of all is that it works. I cannot remember the last time I had a bad case of sunburn (unlike my partner, who always starts off on a low factor cream, gets sunburnt and spends the next three...
