A day out in sunny Bracknell!
Advantages: interactive fun place
Disadvantages: not an entire day trip
...I don't think I will be doing Bracknell an injustice if I say that it isn't really necessarily the first place that springs to mind if you think "good family day out", it is not really a top tourist destination, probably best known for its maze of roundabouts and subways.
The Look Out Discovery Centre is, however, a great place to visit and well worth it if you are in the area or staying at nearby Legoland.
Where is it?
The Discovery Centre is situated in the outskirts of Bracknell and easily accessible from junction 3 of the M3. It is a small centre nestled in the forest and opposite Coral Reef, an indoor adventure swimming pool - a trip to both would make for a good family day.
Practical Info:
The centre consists of 3 parts; an outside play area and adventure playground (free), a hands on science area...

What is it?
This is an ideal place for children and adults of all ages. Apart from the indoor hands on science activites, there is plenty of family fun. There is an outdoor adventure play area, woodland to explore, nature trails, and plenty of fun for all the family! You can take your bikes and ride in the woodland and trails, even take your dog!!
Prices:
The woodland and outdoor play area are free, but the science exhibits inside you need to pay for. You don't have to visit this area, but we found it to be very good value for money.

An adequate hotel
Advantages: Big breakfasts close to Legoland
Disadvantages: A bit tired, nothing special
...Hilton Bracknell
On a recent trip to Legoland we chose this hotel because it was close to Legoland, near to the trains should we want to go into London, and best of all it offered a three day pass into Legoland
FIRST IMPRESSIONS?
The hotel is conveniently situated off a main road, and yet set far enough back so that there is no traffic noise and offers lots of parking round the back.
Once we had taken our cases into the spacious lobby containing a big check in desk and lots of comfy sofas and chairs, the check in process was fairly speedy and simple, and we were given the keys to our room.
THE BEDROOM AND BATHROOM
Since it was only Little Miss and I, we had a twin room, containing, as expected, two single beds, bedside tables, desk and wardrobe with 4 hangers! No matter, we don't get to proud about hanging up our clothes...

It's called a water world - it's actually one big fun-filled pool
Advantages: Great half day trip
Disadvantages: busy on hot days
...Bracknell probably has a bit of an interesting reputation - mainly known for its endless roundabouts, though lately famous for being the location for Harry Potter's house (12 Picket Post Close for the interested). Apart from these claims to fame Bracknell does actually have excellent sports facilities, this being one of the other attractions on offer which include an ice rink and Ski slope.
Coral Reef Waterworld in Bracknell boasts different pool areas and also has 3 water flumes and a sauna area.
It is council run, and current prices and opening hours can be found at www.bracknellforest.gov.uk. I go fairly often, but generally for parent and toddler time in term time which is a reasonable £4.20, at weekends and in holiday times you will pay much more, an adult was £6.95 last time I went at the weekend, a child £4.80, though...

Bowled over - our night out at Hollywood Bowl.
Advantages: Easy to get to, competative pricing.
Disadvantages: Game was interrupted a few times
...The summer holidays are here and finding things to do with the children isn't always easy, but a couple of Wednesdays ago we teamed up with some friends who also have children and decided to go bowling.
We usually go to our local Megabowl as they have a family deal but after discovering via their website that this isn't available during school holidays ( a bit daft if you ask me as we're not likely to be wanting to take a 6 and a 9 year old out in the evening during term-time), I remembered the bowling alley at Bracknell, having been there before with some work collegues.
A quick check on their website and I discovered that not only is their family deal available during school holidays but we could have a game for under 14 pounds ( 13.60 to be exact) or, if we had wanted to we could have had two games for 22 pounds( which is almost...

So hungry I could eat a horse
Advantages: good quality, big portions, reasonable price
Disadvantages: can be slow, not 'The Ritz'
...One of my local eateries is the Running Horse in Bracknell.
The pub is one of a nationwide chain (Hungry Horse pubs) offering reasonably priced meals but with huge portions.
The pub.
The pub is quite large, with around 30 tables indoors, and a few outside for those summer days. There is a kiddies play area outside too. The tables and bar are generally kept tidy and clean, although it can get really busy and then things start to slip - more later.
It has a nice atmosphere, if perhaps a little dingy, and I personally don't like pub's with slogans and quotes on the walls which this has got but they are not too annoying.
There are several fruit machines to play, and they also have a quiz machine and a pool table.
The bar.
The bar is the only major problem I have found in the pub. There is generally only one or two people serving...

Have you been to a Harvester before? Try it again
Advantages: Good value, salad bar, fresher food than expected, great with kids
Disadvantages: No smoking in restaurant
...Been a while since we took the family to Harvester, but it was much much better than the last time we visited. The one in Bracknell had just been refitted and they've got rid of all the old farmyard stuff and it felt much much cleaner and brighter..
Food quality was much better, salad bar well-stocked, staff friendly and the menu meant that we could all eat something we wanted...I'm on Atkins diet for my sins and it was easy, whereas him indoors wanted a blow-out steak. Even the kid's were happy with the choice and there were choices other than sausage and chips.
It's a chained restaurant, so its not going to have any Michellin stars, but then again neither are the prices.
Give it a go...its not a cheesy as I remembered and no-one asked me if I'd been to a Harvester before, even though the guy showing us to our seat nearly did as he...

Hungry no more!
Advantages: Big portion's, great price's
Disadvantages: can get very busy
...The Hungry Horse in Bracknell is quite good.
The Hungry Horse is situated in Bullbrook on a roundabout. Quite easy to get to for driver's and the residents of Bullbrook.
They have a pub side which opens at 11am and the resurant side opens at 12 noon.
The layout is quite good, they have 2 main door's to enter the building, one is for the pub and the other is for the resturant. There is no partition between the two side's.
The table in the resturant side can accomodate quite alot of people as there is about 14 table which seat 4 people at one time. Outside is Picnic bench style wooden tables that also sit 4 people round.
The food is at very good price's, the food range from soup to sunday roast's to steak's. They have amazing pudding's on offer at reasonable prices. There is a kid's menu that is unbelivably reasonable...

Lessons in the Loo
Advantages: good food, freshly cooked and appeals to kids.
Disadvantages: service was slow initially.
...and wrestling with Italian pronunciation - useful words such as "fifth floor" and " bread-roll" were rolling from their lips (in Italian of course!) Believe it or not, they have language-teaching tapes running in the loos! After rather more visits than were strictly required for natural causes, we were all giggling hysterically, especially after my youngest proudly pronounced a couple of very impressive Italian words and after we'd failed to guess his meaning, proudly said "corned beef".
The whole meal for 4 of us cost £54 including a 10% gratuity, and we came away knowing some Italian as well as having had a wonderful evening out. I thoroughly recommend F&B's and will be going there again if any more extra cash comes my way!
* The F&B's we visited was at The Point in Bracknell...

Don't let the PUCK stop here!
Advantages: Value for money Entertaining Exhaustingly Brill.
Disadvantages: Not on TV enough , Are you watching BBC?
...The Ice hockey Season is fast approaching but have you seen any news in the National Media ? No well thats not supprising bearing in mind its not a sport that people think to much about in this country and yet if they managed to give it a try they would suprise themselves . as this sport is stunning , Its end to end excitment once you've caught the bug you can't stop yourself. At the end of the day its a game between to highly skilled teams which compete on a thin piece of metal scating on a pad of ice, reaching speeds of about 40mph hitting a puck made of thick Rubber (frozen for 3 hours before use)which travells aproximatly 60mph . the only breaks they have are themselves. But the fans seem to have more phone fun than the players So if you live in Ayr Belfast Newcastle Sheffield Nottingham Bracknell London Cardiff and MANCHESTER why...
