We used to do the most bizarre things to make them fit and to soften the leather - sitting with your boots on in bowls of hot water, putting lots of Nikwax onto the wet boots so the nasty stuff got sucked into the pores...

Brasher 'freelite' walking boots

Advantages: Excellent value for money, strong, sturdy, gore-tex
Disadvantages: Expensive?

...The Brasher Freelite walking boot is one of the best boots on the current outdorr pursuits market, taking into account the cost and design. The fabric material makes in excellent boot, compared to the classical leather style. It is much lighter than the the leather boots people speak so highly of, but it still remains a brilliant product. Also, by the fact that it is made out of fabric, it takes only a few hours to actually walk it in, where the leather boots tend to take days, and can cause great dis-comfort in the process. Being gore-tex also improves the boot, after a 20mile hike, my feet were still perfectly dry, despite have walked through streams, muddy fields, flooded grounds etc. The tred on them is much better than other makes, it is nice and deep, so walking on rough terrain is fairly easy, gripping to the rocks...

Review of Brasher Men's Hillmaster GTX Boots

☼ Meindl High Boots & Short Skirt ☼

Advantages: Waterproof, well constructed
Disadvantages: Bit stiff at first

...for the hills. My friend Koshkha had praised a pair of soft comfy leather Brashers and the only other make I knew of was Meindl as hubby had recently bought a pair for himself. I suspected these must be top of the range as he has a tendency to buy expensive brands. Luckily for me, Blacks had a 20% off all boots over £100 on the day I went shopping so I decided to go for a relatively expensive pair. That basically narrowed my choice to either a pair of soft brown Brashers or a pair of harder but denim coloured Meindls. The Brashers to be honest felt like soft slippers compared to the Meindl pair but I was worried that they lacked ankle support and who wants a twisted ankle whilst in the middle of nowhere? Gambling, Money and Gangsters ? A Winning Combination?

Advantages: Fantastic detail, technically brilliant, great if you like long films
Disadvantages: might be too much like a doc for some people, not for people of a sensitive disposition

...Scorcese, Pesci and DeNiro working together on another movie based on a book by Nicholas Pileggi, is this just a remake of Goodfellas? Although both films are about life in the mob, moblife in Las Vegas is much bigger and brasher than ?back home?. Both movies are based on true stories one of Henry Hill (Goodfellas) and Lefty Rosenthal (Casino). They are however very different people one is a violent gangster and the other is a born gambler with mob connections. This accounts for the very different feel of the two movies. If Goodfellas is about everyday life in the mob, Casino is all about Vegas during the mob years. The first part of the movie focuses heavily on the mechanics of gambling and running a mob casino and it isn?t until the later part of the film the plot and characterisation really takes. Classic

Advantages: Plot, animation
Disadvantages: Some of the additional characters

...Tom and Jerry always has been and always will be classic cartoon television. I have to say that my preference is for the older 40s and 50s versions. The later revised brasher artwork which came out in the 60s I think always left me a bit turned off. However, if you leave that quibble aside, Tom and Jerry is wonderful stuff, typical slapstick beat em up conflict between cat and mouse. They've been repeated so often that you can usually recite the story from memory and that gets a bit boring sometimes, but even then they have their good bits. The best shows are the ones with additional characters, such as Spike the bulldog, although the baby duck is horrendous. Tom and Jerry is still good for oldies and kids still find it wonderful viewing....

Advantages: Top notch performances from De Niro and Cuba Gooding Jr
Disadvantages: The oh so sickly ending

...diving course. Although he is given his chance the ingrained racial prejudices of both the officers and men look set to give Brashear a very rough ride. By a wicked turn of fate Brashear's instructor for the course is Billy Sunday and this tough grizzled old sea dog is as opposed as anyone in letting a black man pass the course. I don't want to reveal any more of the plot as it should be discovered by the viewer but suffice it to say that the institutionalized racism that blights the Navy at this point in time throws every obstacle imaginable at Brashers and some more besides. Cuba Gooding Jr can always be relied on for an energetic and wholehearted performance and although he tones the high octane acting down here his charm and decency puts the viewer firmly on Brashers side for the whole of the film. Dimply Chin saves the day

Advantages: Douglas, Turner, Devito
Disadvantages: A bit shallow

...and swarthy Latino nasty, and we're off on a high tempo, enormously funny slab of adventure with Devito hot on the duo's heels. There's a wonderful love-hate relationship between Douglas and Turner and they spark wonderful performances out of each other which make this extremely watchable and absorbing, even if it pretty shallow stuff. It clearly owed a lot to the Indiana Jones movies and Douglas based his part on Harrison Ford's adventurer, though he's a lot brasher and a great deal less blessed with the old grey matter. However, Romancing The Stone is no mere copycat, it's rip roaring fun and highly enjoyable as long as you abandon all pretensions to deep thought...
