Worth the pain - Braun Silk-Epil X'elle

Advantages: Effective and long lasting
Disadvantages: Painful!

...For some reason, despite being blonde and fairly dainty in other respects, I've been cursed with leg hair that belongs to someone else - someone like my big grizzly bear of a boyfriend! It grows so fast that I usually have to shave my legs every day in the summer, which is a right pain. I've tried hair removal creams and found it just took longer, smelt horrible and didn't last any better, and waxing which brought me out in nasty bumps and didn't even get all the hairs. Bah. Anyway, I thought I'd give this a try as I had nothing to lose other than the 50 quid it cost me from Argos (although it's probably available cheaper online), and I've probably spent that loads of times over on razors and shaving foam... Braun 5100 Silk & Soft Battery Shaver

Advantages: Easy to use, attractive, long life battery
Disadvantages: Not the closest of shaves

...I was fed up of disposables going rusty after one use and wanted something that I could use over and over again. I didn't have a lot of money to spend- i just wanted a basic shaver for my legs. However, after browsing vigouresly i saw the 'Braun Silk and Soft Body Shave 5100' and thought it a good deal. I was only looking for cheap leg shaver but to my suprise, the decription stated: underarm shaving, bikini trim AND leg shaving. Along with all the other features like: 'flexible foil', 'softstrip' and 'OptiShave attatchments'. I'm probably impressed to easily, because I had no idea what each feature meant, it just sounded better compared to others in the same price range. I was very impressed when I opened it because: 1, it was so easy to use (just popped in the batteries and off i went) and 2, money off at figleaves for my purchase...

...have managed it myself a couple of times. I actually think that the hairs on my underarms and my bikini line have grown back less dense than before. However, I have been very disappointed with the results on my legs. My legs are quite hairy and I remove the hairs from the upper and lower parts of my leg...normally I shave them daily which produces a nice smooth effect but is a real pain to have to do all the time. I thought the Braun would mean that I wouldn't have to pay my leg hairs so much attention but it hasn't quite worked out that way. After 2 weeks of epilating every other day, I had the most awful ingrowing hairs on my legs. It didn't seem to affect my underarms or bikini line but my legs were covered in them. One or two got a bit infected and went red and if I ran my hands up my legs, all I could feel were little lumps...

...I had the old Braun silk-epil since about 1999 and when it gave up the ghost I started shaving again. After a couple of months I noticed that I was hairier than usual and got really annoyed at having to shave every couple of days so decided to invest in another of Braun's epilators. ...Hair free and not as painfull as led to believe. After all these years I invested in an epilator. I always thought it would hurt as everyone I knew had said it was. When I opened my product it looked scarey. I plugged it into the mains, it has a long wire which made it easier. I was sweating with fear at the noise before even trying. I thought no pain no gain and used the expert head first as there are two different head one for beginners. It is loud and has a light so you can see your hair. After the initial pain which was not bad the massagers took the pain away. It just felt like a sharp tingle. It can be a little more sharp round the ankle but I got over it. This is better than waxing as that is definitly more painfull and for anyone who wants to make it less scratchy there is an ice pack for the more frightened first time...

Disadvantages: none specific to the product itself, several to the process of epilating

...I bought this product to replace an older version from a different manufacturer that I have had for about five years. I moved from North America to the UK and my old epilator wasn't dual voltage, so buying a new one was easier than the variety of adaptors and step down devices I would have had to find to keep using the old one. Because I've been epilating so long, its hard for me to comment on the pain level of the Braun vs any other epilator as I really don't get much pain from the process anymore. At first it does hurt when you use it, but in my experience your skin gets accustomed, your hair roots get weaker, and the whole process gets quicker and easier. ...I had been undecided for some time about whether or not to buy this product. Eventually, having read other reviews I decided to get it. Advantages: quicker than tweezing, the light, face and other attachment, ice pack
Disadvantages: can hurt, & tweezers can go blunt after awhile.

...Overall, the epilator is an ok way to get rid of hairs. i feel it seems to work best on people who are not as hairy, because the pulling out of the hairs are not as painful. i tend to use it on the face as well, which does work well. but what i did find, (like with any thing), the more i used it, the twezers became more duller, so therefore not picking up all the hairs so cleanly, esp the light ones. Its now not as sharp like in the beginning when i first had it.
