Rebellion Brewery - No need to revolt though!
Advantages: It's like a wee-up in a brewery but better!
Disadvantages: Short Tour that doesn't move!
...that prefer motorway driving could take the M40 leaving at junction 4 and follow the A404 to come into Marlow from the other direction.
In my ever-constant quest to enlarge my collection of trade marked beer glasses (see http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/beerglasscollector/ for proof! (Don't forget to sign the guest book!)) I had found out about the brewery from a good friend and the fact that as part of the brewery tour you received a free etched glass. Needing to investigate further I arranged to make my way down to Marlow for the next available open evening. Every first Tuesday of the month, the Rebellion Beer Company opens the gates of the brewery to the public for what their website calls "Evening Brewery Tours". Officially the opening time is ˝ past 7 (19:30) but we arrived at just gone 7 in order to avoid the potential queues and ensure...

"Genuine beer that cannot be excelled in this colony"
Advantages: Beautiful building, a core part of Tasmania's heritage
Disadvantages: None - this is even for non-beer drinkers!
...The Cascade Brewery is Australia's oldest brewery being founded by Peter Degraves in 1824. It is set amongst the mountains of Hobart in Tasmania, Australia and is located only a short ten minute drive from the centre of town. When looking at the Brewery factory the building is in its old and original condition with dark walls and huge old fashioned windows. The building stands alone surrounded by mountains, trees and grassland at the base of Mount Wellington which makes for a beautiful photo. It does look very daunting though and it has an eerie feel and looks very much like an old haunted mansion.
Cascade manufacture a range of both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages including beer, cider and syrups. Even though Degraves originally emigrated from England, all of Cascade's products are very much Australian. The Brewery produces...

When in Dublin.... head for St James Gate
Advantages: Fantastic views with a glass of the black stuff in your hand
Disadvantages: None
... GUINESS BREWERY & MUSEUM
DUBLIN
I am rather partial to a drop of the blackstuff, so when my son arranged a weekend break for my good lady wife and my self to Dublin, I had to visit the Guiness Brewery and Museum.
Now perhaps I am biased, but this was one of the best tours I've taken.
St James Gate is the entrance to the brewery; the gate is enormous, with big letters spelling out its name. A real photo opportunity.
The brewery looks like a big factory, but inside you find that the building gets larger the higher up you go, just like a pint glass!!
When you walk in, you are directed to the center of the floor, where you see the original signed lease for the building.
Everyone is given a clear token with a drop of Guinness in the middle - save this, as you will need it at the top to get your 'free...

"Beer is proof that God loves us"
Advantages: A good price, interesting and informative tour and a lovely pub too!
Disadvantages: Might not be a tour if not enough interest. Look out for the wet floor!
...Anyone who has read some of my recent reviews (go on?you know you want too) will be well aware that we toured Cropton Brewery in September. This was a treat to celebrate my birthday and also gave us a chance to have a meal and a few drinks in the pub next door. It is impossible to write a review of Cropton Brewery without mentioning the New Inn (they are part of the same business), so this is about a bit of both (more about the brewery though)!
~~~WHERE IS CROPTON BREWERY?
Cropton Brewery is located in the village of Cropton, not far from Pickering, in North Yorkshire. We visited while spending a lovely week in Whitby so we came from the North Yorkshire coast. This meant we came via the A170 after going over the Yorkshire Moors. The village of Cropton is signposted from both directions but my tip is to get a good road map...
Up Cantillon Kriek without a Paddle!
Advantages: A fascinating insight into the history of brewing.
Disadvantages: Not for the less mobile or for children.
...During our trip to Belgium, earlier on this year, we travelled on the train from Ghent to Brussels for a day out. Even though it was raining enough to convince me to start building an ark we had a lovely (if extremely hectic) time. Our first port of call after arriving at Brussels Midi Station (the one where the Eurostar stops) was Cantillon Brewery ~ the Brussels home of Lambic and Gueuze beer!
~~~WHERE IS CANTILLON?
The brewery, bar and visitor centre is located at number 56 Rue Gheude Straat, in a suburb of Brussels called Anderlecht. When you arrive by train at Brussels Midi Station you can either walk (it takes about ten to fifteen minutes) or get a tram or bus. The metro station is more or less attached to the railway station and there is a bus stop outside too. The trams that head in that direction are numbers 18, 52...

A Tale of Two Breweries!
Advantages: Nice place with two breweries!
Disadvantages: Not much to do if it's raining.
...We have just returned from a lovely trip to the North Yorkshire and the beautiful Yorkshire Dales. We picked our location (Leyburn) because it was handy for public transport and we could give our friend who normally drives a break and travel by bus. We looked in our Yorkshire Dales travel brochure and planned trips out throughout the week. On Wednesday we decided to go to Masham for few different reasons.
Firstly, Wednesday is market day in Masham, so coinciding our visit with that seemed like a good idea. Secondly, Masham is also on a direct (and surprisingly regular for the Yorkshire Dales) bus route from Leyburn and, thirdly, the little town is home to TWO breweries!
So, we had picked where to visit, now we had to work out how to get there. A trip to the Tourist Information centre later and the extremely friendly lady had...

Build Your Own Brewery
Advantages: Loads of fun, cheap
Disadvantages: None
...Now call me a mean mummy, but when my 2 year-old sits down for a Stickle-Brick session I am likely to start acting like a big bully and push her off so I can have them all to myself! In fact, when my little girl was given her first ever bucket of Stickle Bricks (present from Nana last Christmas), it was her dad and I that spent an hour kneeling on the living room floor constructing wonderful edifices such as pagodas (me) and breweries (daddy). Ahem. She was a wee bit too little then, at one and half, but she started really getting in the bricks a couple of months later.
Stickle bricks are very brightly coloured plastic shapes and come in many forms. Most of them are square-ish or rectangles, but there are also triangles, frames for doors or windows and a whole host of other strange animal-related shapes too. We have some butterflies...

Beer, Breweries, Bars and Belgium!
Advantages: A good guide with useful info and humour.
Disadvantages: Is only his opinions.
...of the most use to us. It is in this section we found out how to get to brewery museums (such as Cantillon in Brussels ~ see review) and when beer festivals were on (in August we were able to go to the excellent Lambikstompers festival). The beers styles and brewing sections were ok, but we only dipped into them while choosing a beer and they didn't really help us while we were there (probably they are chapters to read BEFORE you travel).
***Breweries, Towns and Beers***
This is where the Guide becomes a vital piece of kit! The book gives information on 170 breweries, 1100 beers, where to find them and (most importantly) which are the best bars and cafes to drink them in. These sections tell you which regions these places are in, how to get there and also has some maps. Unfortunately Webb relies on his own (sometimes slightly out of date...

Mooning About in Bruges!
Advantages: An interesting and informative tour.
Disadvantages: Steep steps and uneven floors.
...When we go to Belgium we do indulge in a fair amount of beer sampling, but we do try to do a bit of sight seeing too. So when the beer sampling and the sight seeing can seamlessly coincide then life is good! Once such example of this wondrous occurrence can be found during a day out in the Flanders city of Bruges. A trip to the Brewery de Halve Maan (previously known as the Straffe Hendrik brewery) combines history, beer drinking and a good day out!
~~~WHERE IS THE BREWERY?
The brewery, bar, restaurant, museum and visitor centre that make up this tourist attraction is located at 26 Walplein. It isn't far from the cathedral, the main tourist sites in Bruges (the diamond museum is not far away) and is about ten minutes walk from the train station. To be honest, we went with some people who knew the way from the station, but...
