Hotel Armadams, Palma de Mallorca

Advantages: Well presented, friendly, welcoming, modern
Disadvantages: On a back street

...We visted the Hotel Armadams for our honeymoon back in October 2006 for a short break to take in the sights and sounds of Palma. It is situated one "block" away from the main promenade in Palma, a road lined on one side with bars, hotels, shops and the marina and harbour area on the other. I am not a great Spanish speaker, infact I know only the most basic of phrases to muddle through, but the staff were very understanding and very helpful, even though we weren't checking in until really late following a delayed flight. The room was exceptional. Clean crisp tiled floors beautufully airy which really made a good first impression. We had a view looking out at the flats opposite, but a sneaky view between the buildings to the goregous marina opposite. Features of the room were also impressive, with a mini bar, television...

Melia Pala Atenea Palma de Majorca

Advantages: Ideal for a relaxing break.
Disadvantages: 30 minute walk to the beach if that's your thing

...Great Location & Great Staff 05/05/2007 - 12/07/2007 approx £100 per room, per night B&B. First time we have stayed at this hotel but have used the Sol Melia Group throughout Spain before. The hotel is located on the Paseo Maritimo in Palma and has excellent views over the marina and Bay of Palma and is about a 20 minute stroll to the centre of Palma. Ideal for visiting the bars and restuarants of the old town at night and the beautiful city of Palma during the day. There is also a good range of bars, cafes etc along the Paseo Maritimo if the 20 minute walk is an issue. The facilities were good especially the pool area which was spotless, had plenty of space and the best pool bar staff I've met in a long time. Once they got to know you nothing was a problem and the standard of service was friendly and relaxed. The level...

Voranova Apartments Palma Nova

Advantages: Dirty, old, only cleaned once a week
Disadvantages: The pool

...The Voranova hotel was about half an hour from the airport and cost about 25euros, split between two, so wasn't too bad as the hotel transfer coach you could also book cost as much together and took about 2 hours stopping at every hotel that existed! The hotel was in a good location, a few minutes walking distance from Palma Nova town centre and the beach. It was also about 10-15minutes walk to the centre of Magaluf. We got a bus to Palma City one day and this took about 45 minutes and was very crowded. Just across the road from the hotel was a large supermarket and several shops including a pharmacy, there was also a taxi rank and bus stop. The hotel being in Palma Nova rather than Magaluf was good as it wasn't too noisy and busy at night. There were plenty of small bars and resturants in Palma Nova. The hotel also had...

When De Palma Could Direct

Advantages: Great political thriller
Disadvantages: Dated somewhat now

...Back in the days when Brian De Palma was a director (a tongue in cheek comment) he made a series of movies that became landmarks in the history of the moving image. His movies were revolutionary, the stories that he told were one of a kind nobody even got near to achieving the power that De Palma had during the 1970's and early 80's. Blow Out is a stellar example of De Palma at his very best. Jerry Terry (John Travolta) is a movie sound effects man, while out recording sounds for his latest movie he stumbles upon an accident. While initially concerned primarily with saving call girl Sally (Nancy Allen) from the wreckage of a car that plunges in a lake, Jack dismisses certain thoughts from his mind. Having delivered Sally to the hospital and finding himself dead centre in a political conspiracy (the driver of the car being a political...

The Best Laid Plans

Advantages: Location, staff, level of service, food, facilities
Disadvantages: Crowds, soulless bars, some of the other guests...*ahem*!

...time I decided to choose a resort town on the south of the island, allowing relatively easy access to the city of Palma de Mallorca. I finally chose Palma Nova, a town I had visited with my husband over ten years ago when we had taken the bus from the city of Palma for a look around. We found it a pretty average looking resort at the time, with my husband complaining it was "too British", which is a fair assessment. I eventually chose the Sol Mirlos Tordos hotel - I have stayed in several Melia hotels in Spain and one thing I can safely say about the Sol Melia group is that they know how to run hotels, so whilst a Melia was outwith my budget, I was happy to book a hotel from one of their cheaper brands. The complex consists of two hotels, the Mirlos (blackbirds) and Tordos (thrushes). We had booked an all-inclusive stay, meaning we would...

De Palmas Mars Mellow

Advantages: Great cast, De Palma's creative camerawork, and the overall sense of considered quality
Disadvantages: First half of the film is a bit dull in places, possibly too laid-back for modern-day audiences

...Panned by the critics, and sunk at the box-office by audience apathy, this latest movie from Brian De Palma wouldn't appear to have an awful lot in its favour. How surprising, then, to at least discover it's far from a worthless catastrophe. Mission To Mars will never go down in cinematic history as a groundbreaking, or even particularly memorable, entry in the Sci-fi genre. An all-too-predictable opening 30 minutes, where dialogue is woefully cliched and a lack of dramatic pace almost stalls the entire project before it's begun to get to where it so obviously plans to go, sees to that. Yet, come the closing reel, the expected sensation of relief it's over is nowhere to be found : Mission To Mars turns out not to be a protracted endurance test of patience after all. Deliberately eschewing the more contemporary approach of quick...

De Palmas best

Advantages: Al Pacino
Disadvantages: none

...busted, he never told her what he did or where he went as he didn't want her seeing him in prison. Hence her frostiness towards him when he shows up at her dance-class. Soon everyone is wanting a piece of Carlito, including a young punk on his way up, "Benny Blanco from the Bronx", who crosses Carlito in his club and Carlito makes the mistake of not killing him.... To give anymore away would spoil a lost gem of a film made by people at the top of their games - Pacinos world-weary performance anchors the film and along with Brian De Palmas excellent and stylish direction, Sean Penns amazing performance and a brilliant and involving storyline this makes for an instant and underrated classic of the genre....

Shopping In Palma Is An Experience

Advantages: Lots to see, interesting sites mixed in with shopping, so you get both
Disadvantages: Easy to get lost in Arab Quarter

...Palma on the Island of Majorca is a great place for shopping and doing a bit of sight seeing. We were staying in Palma Nova and being past the age when drinking all day in pubs and clubs, then flaking out on the beach seems a good way to spend a holiday, decided to find some 'civilized' life for a change. There are buses from all round the Island into Palma. The City itself is big. Everything is so spread out in the modern part and we found ourselves walking a long way to find major department stores and designer shops on the main road. However, we eventually found a wonderful shopping area in the old Arab Quarter of the City. This area is a maze of alleyways and small shops of all kinds. There are designer shops selling everything from shoes to hair accessories and woolly jumpers to delicate lingerie. It is very easy to get...

FREE DVDs

Advantages: Free trial, large choice, post included, new realeases
Disadvantages: see review

...I like movies and I like freebies, so when you get offered both in one swoop you?re bound to accept! I used my two week free trial with this company and remained with them for a couple of monthsbefore moving on to try many other companies free trials (and winning a new DVD player on Tesco DVD rental site on their free trial offer). I then had an email from DVDs 365 asking me to go back, and offering me a free DVD if I did so. I had just left Tesco (with my new DVD player) so I chose to go back with them. ∆◊◊ THE SERVICE THEY OFFER ∆◊◊ Basically it?s like going to a video shop and hiring films on DVD, except you don?t pay for each film you chose ? rather a monthly fee for which you can watch as many movies as you can fit in, for us this is usually around 8 a month (2 a week usually weekends...

MARTHA SHOULD BE PROUD!!!

Advantages: lovely apartment, nice pool, great location
Disadvantages: it wasn't cheap

...by the beach rather than staying by the pool, we decided this was a bit dodgy, so opted for the next cheapest apartments - Marthas, in Palmanova. We made the mistake (or not) of only looking at the reviews for Marthas after we had booked and paid our money. Basically all reviews pre-2008 or so stated that the place was AWFUL, but apparently the apartments had been renovated around about that time and were brilliant now. We weren't really sure WHAT to believe but it was a done deal now. We'd chosen, whether we liked it or not, this is where we were staying... ****THE LOCATION**** Palmanova is located on the Balearic island of Majorca between the capital Palma and the notorious party resort of Magaluf. It is a busy, popular resort in its own right but far quieter and calmer than Magaluf - thank goodness! (I'm a bit old for those kind...
