...Bridgetown Barbados, well what can I say. I have been to Barbados 8 times and am so enamoured by the Island that I have bought land out there and brought home a stray dog from there too! The pace is very slow and laid back which takes some getting used to at first. We regularly go to Bridgetown, you can get a taxi, or just take the cheap bus, it only costs about one and half dollars, but it is not for the faint hearted. If you are staying at an all inclusive hotel they usually provide a free shuttle to Bridgetown so you can go and spend all your money. We got married at Turtle Beach Hotel, it was fabulous, there are some great wedding packages out there. I got my engagement ring and wedding ring and eternity ring from Bridgetown, I think the shop was called The Royal, very nice and very posh, it is 14 Karat gold as opposed to...

Not so Grand - Barbados

Advantages: Food, Location
Disadvantages: Poor Decor, Customer Service, Room Quality and more...

...The not so Grand Barbados Beach resort is located on the west coast of Barbados in The Carlisle Bay Resort. A large property in need of renovation and modernisation which recently went under a refurbishment (lick of paint - outside). The hotel is 10 miles away from Barbados main airport Grantley Adams International, Bridgetown with a transfer time of around 20 minutes. The concept of the hotel when it first opened must have been a great one which went into a downward spiral and never recovered! It has a big fountain just outside reception which is rarely ever on and with black mould around it. A small pond of some description is located to one side with fish which can just be seen through the mould also. A large undercover area around the fountain is supposed to give the 'Grand' entrance where you would expect a bell boy to wait to...

A colonial air about it

Advantages: Great night life, good taxi service

...Bridgetown has still got a colonial air about it, around Bridge Street and it is a very prosperous place, with vestiges of the empire with The Royal Barbados Yacht Club and similar bastions of the Empire. As well as the Kensington Oval, one of the World's greatest Test Match Cricket Grounds, there is a race course at Garrison Savannah, and a wide range of shops, with many tax free jewelers. In addition to this Bridgetown is home to many of Barbados' hottest nightspots including The Boatyard and the legendary Harbour Lights. Taxis run all through the night with a cab to St Lawrence Gap costing between $B25 and $45 depending on the time of night. Bridgetown does however also have a rougher side to it, and there are some problems with drugs and violence, although not generally in the city, and as such it is still safe for tourists. As such...

BGI is a nice airport these days

Advantages: Al-Fresco Check-In
Disadvantages: Lack of eating/drinking facilities after security

...Barbados. I believe there is a public bus that runs between BGI and Bridgetown that is extremely cheap. However, taxis themselves are cheap too and at least save you having to lug your bags on and off a bus, and to and from a bus stop. With arrivals now discussed, I'll move on to departures. This is where i think BGI is great. They have what I'd call an Al-Fresco Check-In. All the check-in facilities are essentially outside under a great big canopy. You might think how can people cope with no air conditioning in such an environment, but there are fans strategically placed to cool the passengers and staff. I believe the whole idea works really well, and reflects the relaxed bajan lifestyle and a great way to leave the country. A Concrete Lovers Paradise

Advantages: Very easy to check in, few delays, nice staff
Disadvantages: Looks like a car park!

OK, so it's not terrible, and there are some very enjoyable parts of the airport, but it looks a bit like a multi-storey car park. The kind of thing you'd find in Central Manchester that was built in the 1970s Getting there... British Airwaws, BWIA(British West Indian Airways), Liat(Caribbean Domestic), and many other small airlines fly to Bridgetown Airport, as it is called. Most of the aircraft parked outside on the ramp are cramped turboprops but Liat and Caribbean Star do have some comfy Bombardier ones. Like most Caribbean islands, it is too small to support a long runway. Watch out for the eager porters.

Advantages: Good taxi service to it
Disadvantages: Duty Free not great

...The Grantley Adams International Airport is about half an hour by taxi from Bridgetown and is in the Southeast of the Island. Taxis services are plentiful and get you there and to your destination although if you are a nervous passenger then you won't enjoy the ride. The duty free is adequate, for cigarettes and rum, but for a lot of other things like wine and champagne it is not worth bothering. There are quite a few shops and bars and newsstands. Parts of the airport are airconditioned and generally it is fairly well ventilated. One thing to beware of, is that on leaving Barbados you are liable for a $B25 (about GBP8) departure tax, on top of the airport taxes....

Whoaaa! I've Been To Barbados!

Advantages: Friendly people, good food, lovely temperature, the beaches
Disadvantages: A long way. Some may not like the summer humidity

Sam Lords Castle Barbados.

Advantages: Amazing weather,great views ,good nightlife.
