Does Brighton Rock?

Advantages: luminated writing, interesting viewpoint
Disadvantages: Drags a bit

...violent crimes, a struggle with faith, paranoia and even Pinkie's unexpected marriage, but is his downfall unavoidable? Who is Graham Greene? **************************** Graham Greene, 87 when he died in 1991 was one of England's great writers, accomplished not only in massively successful novels such as Hear of the Matter and the End of the Affair and Brighton Rock, but also as a playwright and Journalist, even spending some time as a respected critic. A keen traveller, Greene spent as much time as possible touring Europe and later further a field, however, his youth was plagued with depression, accumulating in several suicide attempts and eventually extensive psychoanalysis. Interestingly, Greene claims many of his suicide attempts were made by playing Russian Roulette, however this has been widely disputed by those who knew him...

Brighton Rock

Advantages: Impressive building, good food and attentive staff
Disadvantages: Small bathroom, slightly dated decor in bedroom

...This weekend found me in Brighton at the Courtland?s Hotel, for a last minute weekend ?desperate? revision school with the Open University. The hotel is classified as three stars by the AA and RAC and it also has an RAC dining award. As I was at a revision school, the choice of hotel was not mine, and when I saw the leaflet which was sent with my class joining instructions, I did think that the hotel was perhaps not one I would normally pick. Although it certainly had elegance and grandeur, the bedrooms on the leaflet looked a little dated in terms of style. I was also advised I was booked into a single room and I could not check in until 430pm. Location ----------- The hotel is located on Grand Avenue, Hove, and is a five minute walk from the sea front, and an ample selection of shops and restaurants at Hove. The property is...

Brighton Rock 'and rolls'

Advantages: A Simpley Brilliant Book
Disadvantages: Marmite Effect

...This book needs to have your attention. Written by Graham Greene this novel is dark grim and enthralling. If you had to place it in a genre it would be classed as a 1930?s gang/ murder thriller. However as with many great books and films they become so much more than simple genres. The book starts off from the perspective of a single man working for a newspaper in Brighton however the books emphasis soon changes to that of a young gang leader, named Pinkie. Through his eyes we follow as he struggles to cover up a murder, control his own gang (who resent such a young leader), and of course fight off the local rivals. The book is a fascinating look at good and evil. After Pinkie commits brutal murder he finds himself covering up the murder not so much from a lethargic police force but from a local kind hearted woman called Ida...

BRIGHTON ROCKS! MY HOMETOWN

Advantages: Lively, Entertaining, Good food, Good beer
Disadvantages: Can get busy

...Brighton to many is London-by-the-sea to others the destination for a dirty weekend. I have lived in Brighton for over 20 years, I even tried to leave once but soon realised what a mistake I?d made! Over the years the Town (now officially a city) has outgrown these popular preconceptions and has developed into one of the liveliest centres for tourism, culture and entertainment in the south of England. *HISTORY* Up until the 16th century Brighton was small but important fishing village with a population of 400 fishermen. But within a generation in the early 17th century Brighton became the largest town in Sussex. The town became known as a health spa due to the supposed medical properties of the seawater that would cure many diseases. The growing Royal interest of the Prince Regent (to become George IV) led to the building...

Brighton Rocks in The Lanes

Advantages: great location, friendly & knowledgable
Disadvantages: car parking & breakfast!!

...I had to attend a conference in Brighton recently, so hubby and I decided to treat ourselves and stay a few extra days, do some shopping and generally 'chill' out from work. We choose the Thistle due to cost and availability really - many of the hotels on the travel website we use were fully booked or looked in need of paint and repair. This was advertised as being close to The Lanes and numerous restaurants as well as being sea front based. LOCATION The Thistle is a glass fronted, modern looking hotel, situated approx 200 yards from Brighton Pier, directly on the seafront. I say modern looking, because most of the other hotels nearby were the old Victorian style, so the Thistle stood out somewhat!!! Directly behind this hotel is The Lanes and various restaurants - so it really is close to all amenities as advertised...

Brighton Pier

Advantages: Free entry
Disadvantages: Gets very crowded

...Seaside piers seem to be a very British tradition and there are many different examples to be found in England and Wales, although oddly none exist north of the border in Scotland. Brighton's pier is one of the most famous of them all. Officially known as The Brighton Marine Palace Pier or the Palace Pier for short it officially opened in the May of 1899. By this date the Victorians and their predecessors had already built many other piers, including two earlier ones at Brighton. Brighton's first pier was constructed in 1823. This was known as The Royal Suspension Chain Pier and still existed in 1891 when construction of the Palace Pier began. At this time the Chain Pier was considered to be unsafe and was in a state of disrepair so one of the conditions attached to the construction of the new pier was that this old one was demolished...

Brighton Rock..s

Advantages: good atmosphere,
Disadvantages: none none!

...Rock, stoney beach, weirdness, chipshops...these are all things you may associate with Brighton. But, you should also be considering shops, restaurants, clubs, and yes, the beach is stoney. Brighton is a great place for domestic tourism. Its a lively town, which is great for couples and families alike. There is a lot to do there, and you'll never be bored! *~*Firstly the shops*~* There is Churchil Square shopping centre. This is a big mall, which is located in the town centre. Its home to some big retail outlets - from H&M, to Virgin, to Debehams, to BHS. Outside of the mall, is a long road (Western Road) which has many more stores (Marks and spencer, Boots, Topshop, GAP). There is great variety and choice. And dont forget to venture down towards the sea, because thats where the old Hanningtons was (Historic!), French connection...

Brighton Rocks

Advantages: Great place to live
Disadvantages: not always that supportive

...I am in my 2nd year at brighton uni, and I am still excited everytime I see the sea! (that's what growing up in London does to you!). The uni is split over a few campuses, and where you are based will tend to dictate where you live. There is a campus in Eastbourne, but I only ever hear bad things about being there - nothing to do, too far away from anything. I am based at the Falmer site, which involves quite an annoying little bus journey (it stops for ten mins on-route) but it's fine, about 25 mins to centre of town. The student bar at falmer is constantly being argued about, as it is rather grubby, but it is being knocked down soon anyway, so I am not sure what all the fuss is about. Not many of the students here have great things to say about the actual Univeristy, we don't always feel that the lecturers are on our 'side...

The Booth Museum, Brighton

Advantages: Free admission, lots to see
Disadvantages: None for me

...The Booth Museum is located on Brighton's suburban back streets well away from the town centre but having said that it is on Dyke Road (the A2010) which is one of the major routes through the town and so it is relatively easy to find. The museum is named after the Victorian natural historian Edward Thomas Booth who spent much of his life in Brighton. Primarily it houses his personal collection of stuffed birds but there are also animals, insects, fossils and skeletons. These collections were amassed during his lifetime and contain over half a million different specimens. He lived between 1840 and 1890. Like most Victorian naturalists of the time he was an avid collector. It seems odd nowadays to think that someone that was considered to be such a lover of these creatures should hunt them down and shoot them. However we need to...

Brighton Rock

Advantages: It's damn good music!
Disadvantages: Hard to pigeonhole, and people like things to be pigeonholed. One clunker of a track.

...First things first, this is NOT the Fox who sashayed up the charts in the mid-70s with "Only You Can" and "S-S-S-Single Bed". This Fox originated from Brighton in the late 60s. Local musos Alex Lane (keyboards), Tim Reeves (drums) and percussionist Nick Apostiledes joined forces with student Steve Brayne (guitar) to form a new band with the intention of playing their own songs rather than bash out the Blues and Psychedelic covers that had been the staple diet of their various groups during the preceding years. With Dave Windross on bass, The Fox were born and they began rehearsing and playing the pub circuit. Nick dropped out as lead singer and was replaced by Winston Weatherall, a 'superstar' of the Brighton scene owing to his stints in groups such as Gary Farr & The T-Bones. His guitar and sitar playing blended in well with Steve...
