'Ackee' restaurant for Bristol?

Advantages: Apparently the first Caribbean restaurant in Bristol
Disadvantages: Lack of atmosphere, paying extra for side dishes

...Regular readers will know or realise that I like my food a lot! And not only do I love it, I love it even more when someone else cooks it for me! Oh I can cook, very well in fact but I do all the cooking because my partner cant, so sometimes I like sitting back with a drink and getting it delivered to me on a plate. I'm sure I've mentioned before that our local paper does a deal whereby you collect 4 tokens and two of you get lunch for a fiver or dinner for 8 quid. Theres a set list of restaurants and a set menu. This way we get to try some of the best and unusual restaurants in Bristol without forking out a fortune if its crap! I'm a winner whatever! This is how we ended up at Plantation on the Gloucester Rd in Bristol, in this spot have been several restaurants that have been rated fantastic but have all gone under in months...

Diamond review  Harvester Restaurants

Advantages: Always one close by, quick turn out, children are welcome and catered for.
Disadvantages: Toilets can be quite disturbing, not all dishes taste as good they are described.

...Harvester Restaurants Restaurant Reviewed: Stag and Hounds Winchester Road Basingstoke Hampshire (next to Comet and Home Base) The Harvester chain of Restaurants have over 2000 outlets across the United Kingdom and owned and operated by Mitchells and Butlers, who claim to be the UK's leading operator of managed pubs, bars and restaurants. Harvester claim to offer healthy eating, drinking and entertainment in one reasonably priced outlet. **** Parking and Getting a Table ***** As with most of the Harvester's I have visited, there is usually ample free parking at the rear of the establishment. However on Saturday evenings and Sunday lunch times these places are heaving with customers, so avoid the crowds, go early and if possible ring and reserve a table. The Stag and Hounds is no exception but fortunately...

A Passage to India+Tank

Advantages: Excellent service and food
Disadvantages: The parking!

...After a week of stresses and strains the grandparents whisked the children away so me and Alan had a chance for a lovely dinner out. After mulling for a while we drove to Tamarind, a fairly new Indian restaurant in the Downend area of Bristol. There is no parking at the front of the restaurant but at the rear there is a large car park attached to the Somerfield supermarket, but I've got something to tell you about that later! I'd also had a leaflet dropped through my door detailing the lots of delicious sounding dishes. Not in Tamarind will you find dark rooms, red light bulbs and those little booths. Tamarind is open, bright and very cheerful. The whole restaurant is in colours of white, cream and green, not entirely cosy, but not stark either. There is, of course, the obligatory pictures of Indian landmarks. You are escorted to...

Zizzi's- A chain restaurant worth going to!

Advantages: great food, nice open kitchen, friendly staff
Disadvantages: Chain restaurant may put some people off, a little expensive for a 3 course meal.

...Situated on the Clifton triangle in Bristol, this Italian restaurant is conveniently and centrally located. I am often a bit reluctant at eating out in chain restaurants, but I went to this Zizzi's and enjoyed it so much I went back again! **The Food** The menu has an extensive range of dishes to suit everyone?s taste- main courses include: 13 pasta dishes 3 risottos 12 pizza's 2 calzone's 6 salads. There is a good range of both vegetarian and meat/poultry and fish dishes. My favourite is the Calzone Clarissa with Aubergine, red pepper, olives, goats cheese, rocket, pine nuts, tomato and mozzerella. It is so good and really filling too! There are 6 'nibble' dishes and 6 starters available. The nibbles range from olives to a selection of Italian breads and cheese. The starters are more filing and are particularly mouth watering...

Contemporary Arts in Bristol

Advantages: Good variety of events, many of which are free
Disadvantages: Hard to say

...My second visit to Bristol was on a decidedly damp Saturday afternoon, so we were looking for places to spend some time inside. Having walked down the steep slope of Park Street and not being in any hurry to go back up, I suggested that the Arnolfini arts centre might not be too much further to walk. Situated on Bristol's Harbourside, it is easily reached by walking along the quayside from The Centre. From the south you can get there by crossing the swing bridge on Prince Street. Admission is free, so it is definitely worth a visit if you are interested in the arts. The Arnolfini has no permanent collection of artworks, so exhibitions change from time to time. There is currently (August 2008) a display described as an 'interactive shopping experience' entitled 'Far West'. Although not exactly my cup of tea, there was a degree...

BRISTOLS AHOY

Advantages: Big enough to be good
Disadvantages: Small enough to be friendly

...for the goth/industrial types but Nu-Metal and Indie are going well at Inferno and the Bierkeller (also famous for their Oompah night!) Well after all that you'd need some grub, again there is so much to choose from, right in the shopping centre there is the usual Pizza Hut and burger outlets. But moving away from the Centre there is much more. Morrocan, Italian, Lebanese, Australian, Vietnamese, its all here! I can particularly recommend Melbournes on Park St, Henry Africa's Hothouse on Whiteladies Rd and La Campagniola on Zetland Rd. If you aren't sure what you want ask someone to point you in the direction of Gloucester Rd, every 3rd shop is a restaurant! And if you just want a drink there are many, many pubs and bars around, try and avoid the Centre at 2am on a Saturday night, its not particularly pretty. Bristol is trying to be...

Triumphant Thistle Bristol

Advantages: luxurious, friendly, great location
Disadvantages: the price!

...Broad Street, Bristol, BS1 2EL Phone: 0870 333 9130 Fax: 0870 333 9230 www.thistlehotels.com 4 * Check in 2pm Check out 12pm Prices from 80 per room per night I first came across Thistle Bristol on a romantic weekend away with my boyfriend in 2001 We chose it because it was on special offer in the Daily Mail, and it looked fabulous in the photos. Since then we?ve been back every October to celebrate our anniversary. Located around 1 mile from Bristol Temple Meads station, this Thistle hotel sits right in the heart of the town centre ? 3 minutes walk from the main shopping centre, and 3 minutes from the nearest pubs and restaurants. Great for us because we don?t drive. Car parking is available at an extra charge. At first sight I was very impressed! A charming Old Victorian style building. The rooms are equally...

Thistling in Bristol

Advantages: Very nice service
Disadvantages: Very NOT nice prices

..., Bristol, and Birmingham and have typically found the same service up and down the country and the hotels are pretty much identical! The service and rooms up and down the country are all a mirror image of each other. Initially I found this bizarre but now I’m used to the same spiel I get and automatically answer “no” to “Would you like a wake up call?” and “Ok then” to “Would you like a complimentary paper?” This time I stayed a Thistle Hotel in Bristol Temple Meads. I didn’t see much of Bristol but the city centre, which is where the hotel is located, is very pretty and parts of it have a village atmosphere with its little personal shops as opposed to the big bustling commercial streams of department stores. I arrived in the evening and entered what was a pretty grand looking...

Diamond review  Bristol Museum: Much More Than Boring Old Plates

Advantages: Educational, fun and free.
Disadvantages: Long, long queues until the end of August 2009.

...or taxi if you arrive by train. Bristol?s City Museum and Art Gallery (to give it its official title) is housed in an Edwardian building in the Baroque style in the Clifton district, a gift to the city from the tobacco baron, Sir William Henry Wills. It sits grandly between the university?s towering Wills Memorial Building and Browns restaurant, which occupies another impressive building; this one being in a combination of Bristol Byzantine and Venetian Gothic Revival styles (loosely based on the Doge?s Palace!) and which was itself once home to the museum. They make a stately trio. The building dates back to 1905 and the arched entrance on Queen?s Road used to span a driveway that once allowed people to step straight from their carriages into the museum without being troubled by rain on wet days. Only a few years ago glass entrance...
