Bristol - Excellent all round

Advantages: Beautiful city, top university, friendly peole, great night life, loads to see and do
Disadvantages: Oxbridge rejects may put people off, the cost of living is high once you are in private housing

...I am in my third year at the University of Bristol and feel that I can write an honest review about being a student here. COURSES AVAILABLE There are a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses available to study including Bachelors and Masters Degrees as well as Doctorates and Higher Doctorates. The six faculties are:- - Faculty of Arts - Faculty of Engineering - Faculty of Medical and Veterinary Science - Faculty of Science - Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry - Faculty of Social Sciences and Law TEACHING The standard of teaching in my department and most others is exceptionally good. Generally speaking, the lecturers are at the forefront of research and are therefore extremely knowledgeable and passionate about the subject they are teaching. They can recommend the most up to date literature to read which puts students...

Bristol Blues

Advantages: Beautiful city with good night life.
Disadvantages: Many - see above!

...I applied to Bristol University in 1999 and started an undergraduate degree in the October of that year. I did not have a very good experience at all. The university is ideal if you originate from a rich background, preferably having been treated to a private education. I however, did not belong to this upper-class mentality and did not find the institution very welcoming for state school students. I know for a fact that the university is very sensitive to this issue as I spoke to the sabbatical officer and the head of my department before finally deciding that I didn't want to waste three years of my life in such an elitist place. There is a very snobby and conservative feel to Bristol, a university which is teeming with Oxbridge rejects. I am now at Sheffield University and am utterly astounded at the difference between these two...

Bristol University for You?

Advantages: Top Rated University by any league table
Disadvantages: Hills

...Bristol University is one of the most popular universities apart from Oxford and Cambridge. Grades required to get a place here are quite high but well worth a place on the UCAS form. On the whole Bristol is a friendly city, just big enough to cater for huge shopping complexes (Cribbs Causeway) but not 'congested' as one would normally find in London and Manchester. Bristol also boasts 4 multiscreen cinemas including two Warner Bros Cinemas. During the nights and especially the weekends, Whiteladies Street is awashed with lights and practically thronged with taxis and people going from pubs to pubs. That aside, Bristol University must be one of the nicest place to study. Situated at the top of St Michael's Hill and unlike most other universities, there isn't a campus. Students live in halls of residence and private accomodations...

Applying for a course at Bristol is a nightmare

Advantages: Nice campus, good teaching
Disadvantages: Very poor admin for entrants, slow and fussy, not up to date with modern technology

...It seems to me that Bristol is a nightmare to get an offer of a place on a course. My boyfriend applied there to study physics through UCAS. The universities are supposed to reply to the applicant by something like March, but Bristol were late responding (by more that just a couple of days). Still, my boyfriend went to visit the uni and really liked it so made it his first choice. They sent him information about accommodation for him to fill in. The university seems to be living in the past as they did not offer a service to apply for accommodation online (like most other universities in the country). With the information, Bristol sent an A4 sized self adressed envelope for my boyfrined to send the application back in. Unfortunately, new rules mean that A4 envelopes require more than one stamp, something that the imformation pack...

Contemporary Arts in Bristol

Advantages: Good variety of events, many of which are free
Disadvantages: Hard to say

...My second visit to Bristol was on a decidedly damp Saturday afternoon, so we were looking for places to spend some time inside. Having walked down the steep slope of Park Street and not being in any hurry to go back up, I suggested that the Arnolfini arts centre might not be too much further to walk. Situated on Bristol's Harbourside, it is easily reached by walking along the quayside from The Centre. From the south you can get there by crossing the swing bridge on Prince Street. Admission is free, so it is definitely worth a visit if you are interested in the arts. The Arnolfini has no permanent collection of artworks, so exhibitions change from time to time. There is currently (August 2008) a display described as an 'interactive shopping experience' entitled 'Far West'. Although not exactly my cup of tea, there was a degree...

BRISTOLS AHOY

Advantages: Big enough to be good
Disadvantages: Small enough to be friendly

...So people, this will be my last op for a couple of weeks after I move on Sunday and have to wait for a new phone line, etc, I've decided to write an op on my native city. This will be my 10th move and I wouldn't dream of living anywhere else, so heres the low-down on the South West's funkiest city. Bristol is the 7th biggest city in the UK and has around 400,000 people living in it. Due to the two universities in it, they being Bristol University and the University of the West of England (my own beloved uni!), the population can move around about, UWE has 24,000 students alone. That's not to say that Bristol is just a student city, there's definitely much more to it than that. I could concentrate on the bad things, like the rising crime rate, one of the highest council taxes in the country, highest homelessness population outside...

Diamond review  Bristol Museum: Much More Than Boring Old Plates

Advantages: Educational, fun and free.
Disadvantages: Long, long queues until the end of August 2009.

...or taxi if you arrive by train. Bristol?s City Museum and Art Gallery (to give it its official title) is housed in an Edwardian building in the Baroque style in the Clifton district, a gift to the city from the tobacco baron, Sir William Henry Wills. It sits grandly between the university?s towering Wills Memorial Building and Browns restaurant, which occupies another impressive building; this one being in a combination of Bristol Byzantine and Venetian Gothic Revival styles (loosely based on the Doge?s Palace!) and which was itself once home to the museum. They make a stately trio. The building dates back to 1905 and the arched entrance on Queen?s Road used to span a driveway that once allowed people to step straight from their carriages into the museum without being troubled by rain on wet days. Only a few years ago glass entrance...

Triumphant Thistle Bristol

Advantages: luxurious, friendly, great location
Disadvantages: the price!

...Broad Street, Bristol, BS1 2EL Phone: 0870 333 9130 Fax: 0870 333 9230 www.thistlehotels.com 4 * Check in 2pm Check out 12pm Prices from 80 per room per night I first came across Thistle Bristol on a romantic weekend away with my boyfriend in 2001 We chose it because it was on special offer in the Daily Mail, and it looked fabulous in the photos. Since then we?ve been back every October to celebrate our anniversary. Located around 1 mile from Bristol Temple Meads station, this Thistle hotel sits right in the heart of the town centre ? 3 minutes walk from the main shopping centre, and 3 minutes from the nearest pubs and restaurants. Great for us because we don?t drive. Car parking is available at an extra charge. At first sight I was very impressed! A charming Old Victorian style building. The rooms are equally...

Thistling in Bristol

Advantages: Very nice service
Disadvantages: Very NOT nice prices

..., Bristol, and Birmingham and have typically found the same service up and down the country and the hotels are pretty much identical! The service and rooms up and down the country are all a mirror image of each other. Initially I found this bizarre but now I’m used to the same spiel I get and automatically answer “no” to “Would you like a wake up call?” and “Ok then” to “Would you like a complimentary paper?” This time I stayed a Thistle Hotel in Bristol Temple Meads. I didn’t see much of Bristol but the city centre, which is where the hotel is located, is very pretty and parts of it have a village atmosphere with its little personal shops as opposed to the big bustling commercial streams of department stores. I arrived in the evening and entered what was a pretty grand looking...
