The Caledonian Edinburgh: The Most Famous Hotels in the World - Andreas Augustin

This is a leather bound collector's edition of the book Caledonian Hotel. The opening of the Princes Street Station Hotel, re-christened the Caledonian Station Hotel, helped to consolidate Scotland's position on the United Kingdom stage, then on the international stage, by heralding a new era of luxury and travel in Scotland. King Edward VII was on the throne of Great Britain and presided over the British Empire, not least as Emperor of India. Across the Atlantic Ocean, Roosevelt had become the 26th President of the United States of America following the assassination of President McKinley. Scottish-born steel tycoon Andrew Carnegie was in the process of endowing public libraries and universities across the USA and Britain to raise levels of education. Engineer Henry Ford was busy founding a small motor vehicle company that would grow into a multinational conglomerate, and the Wright Brothers had succeeded in keeping their latest invention in the air for a full minute before it touched the ground again. The popular songs of the day were 'Sweet Adeline', 'Shine on Harvest Moon', and 'Ida, Sweet as Apple Cider.' On the streets of Edinburgh there were horses and carriages, and horse-drawn buses. When out-of-doors, men wore flat caps, and gentlemen with top hats wore starched shirts with stiff collars and carried walking sticks. The ladies wore pavement-sweeping dresses with bustles, and magnificent fancy hats upon their heads. In the Christmas of 1903, Cinderella was playing at the Theatre Royal at the east end of Princes Street, and Cook's Siberian Circus, 'The Greatest and Most Gigantic Show Ever Produced,' was pulling in the crowds at the Waverley Market. Then on 21 December, an advertisement in The Scotsman newspaper announced that the Caledonian Railway Company's new hotel at Princes Street Station was 'NOW OPEN for the RECEPTION OF VISITORS.' Overnight, it was the talk of the town. ... less

In The Delicate Storm, it's January in the northern Ontario town of Algonquin Bay, and the foul smell of murder permeates the chilly air when the remains of a bear's dinner in the woods turns out to be the body of an American tourist with a shadowy past. Time for Detective John Cardinal to track down the scent. The mystery deepens when another corpse, that of local doctor Winter Cates, is discovered in the same woods, and Cardinal suspects a link. Unearthing the connection takes Cardinal back to a very different time and place: Montreal circa 1970, a city gripped by the fear of separatist violence. A single incident from that era turns out to have deadly repercussions in Algonquin Bay 30 years later.Giles Blunt's first thriller to feature John Cardinal, Forty Words for Sorrow, was an international hit, which earned Blunt the British Crime Writers' Macallan Silver Dagger Award. With The Delicate Storm, Blunt delivers another imaginative and entertaining mystery. The author honed his craft writing scripts for such popular TV crime series as Law and Order and Street Legal, and his tight plotting is neatly complemented by a vivid yet never overly extravagant writing style. His depictions of the political scenes of both Quebec in the 70s and contemporary Ontario are fascinating (he shows a deep contempt for his novel's neo-conservative Ontario premier, Geoff Mantis, who bears a striking resemblance to a recent real-life premier from Blunt's hometown of North Bay). He is less successful when exploring the sexual tension between Cardinal and colleague Lise Delorme. Creating a plumbing problem in a hotel so they must share a room is just a little forced.Toward the end of The Delicate Storm, the author explains how to avoid being electrocuted by downed power lines. That makes it a book that could literally save your life. Failing that, The Delicate Storm is certain to provide you with hours of pleasurable reading. --Kerry Doole, Amazon.ca ... less

Hotel International
Advantages: Location, breakfasts
Disadvantages: Poor rooms
...I recently went on a cultural girlie trip with a friend to Paris. I was left to do all the booking. I was looking for a reasonable hotel, near a metro stop, which included breakfast. I came across the Hotel International on various travel sites and it seemed fairly highly rated so I booked us in for three nights.

Pop a Cork! - Cork International Airport Hotel
Advantages: Unique, Extremely Comfortable, Location, New build, Service
Disadvantages: Maybe a little pricey
...trip I came across the Cork International Airport Hotel. The thing that first grabbed my attention was that it was a newly built hotel, so it would be clean, it overlooked the runway so I could take pictures, it was close enough to the city for the sight-seeing element of my holiday and it was a 4 star, so I could assume good quality and has 150 rooms.
Below is what I found.

A hotel in downtown Calgary.
Advantages: Suite hotel in downtown Calgary with great food
Disadvantages: Some traffic noise
...Our travel agent reserved a suite for us at the International Hotel in Downtown Calgary for the first night of our Canadian holiday. Opened in 1970 with 248 suites, it was only 6km from the airport and reached in about 15 minutes by taxi, but the estimated time on the airport shuttle bus was 1 hour as it stops at several hotels en route. Calgary has a structure of avenues and streets in grid...
