A museum for everyone
Advantages: So much to see, free
Disadvantages: So much to see!
...The British Museum is not, as the name might suggest, a museum about Britain, but rather the national museum in Britain. It covers all areas of the world and has artifacts from all periods.
HISTORY:
Originally founded by Sir Hans Sloane who left his vast collection of artifacts to the crown to create a museum. The museum was founded by Act of Parliament in 1753. The building as we see it now was constructed in the 19th century, with the Great Court being added in 2000. The museum now attracts around 5 million visitors a year.
ACCESS:
Although the museum is very central there is no tube specifically for it (there was at one time but this has long since closed). The nearest tubes are Russell Square (Piccadilly line) and Tottenham Court Rd (Central and Northern lines). The no. 7 bus from Oxford St also stops outside...

Best of British
Advantages: Huge range of artefacts from all periods, free
Disadvantages: Crowded
...Whilst down south staying with my parents, my Dad and I decided to visit the British Museum – despite having visited numerous museums throughout Britain, strangely enough this was one place I had never been to. Opened to the public in 1759, today the British Museum has an attendance of over 5 million visitors a year.
Getting there was easy – the British museum is located in Bloomsbury, in Great Russell Street to be precise, and the nearest tube station is Tottenham Court Road, which can be accessed from both the central and the northern line. It’s then only a couple of minutes walk to the main entrance of the museum, and it is well signposted, so even if you’re hopeless when it comes to navigation, you can’t get too lost! Entrance is free, which is really useful, especially if you have only a short...

Night at the Museum
Advantages: Great comedy and pure entertainment
Disadvantages: a little slow to begin.. but not for long though.
...Director: Shawn Levy
Producers: Shawn Levy and Stephen Sommers.
Writer: Milan Trenc, Robert Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon.
Stars: Ben Stiller, Carla Gugino, Dick Van Dyke, Mickey Rooney, Bill Cobbs, Jake Cherry, Charlie MurphyRami Malek, Pierfrancesco Favino,Ricky Gervais, Patrick Gallagher, Robin Williams and Kim Raver
Released in Late 2006 this comedy, (I believe is based on a 1993 novel by Milan Trenc), revolved around a Museum and its mystical effects on a night watchman.
**BRIEF PLOT**
In New York city's Museum of Natural History Lawrence 'Larry' Daley, (played by Ben Stiller) begins a job as a night watchman, mainly to gain the respect of his son Nick, (played by Jake Cherry).
Larry has had many dead end jobs in the passed, failing at all he tries, and is so terrified that Nick will prefer spending time with his...

The Booth Museum, Brighton
Advantages: Free admission, lots to see
Disadvantages: None for me
...consider that without such collections our understanding of the natural world would be far less, especially considering that several of the specimens within Booth's collection are now extinct.
Birds were Booth's first love and it is therefore not surprising to discover that the bulk of the museum is dedicated to birds. These specimens are housed within glass cages that have been designed to resemble the species natural habitat so each of the glass cases hold several different species of bird. These include common British garden birds right through to exotic Birds of Paradise. I am a keen ornithologist and I thought that the majority of the stuffed birds looked very authentic but there were a few that looked a little bit odd, especially some of the small Passerines like Finches where their naturally vivid colours appeared to have badly faded. I...

British Gas
Advantages: gas seems fine
Disadvantages: telephone nightmare
...British Gas
I felt I had to write this review after having to deal with this company for the first time and being pretty disappointed. Having moved into a new flat and coming from a flat where all the bills were included in the rent meaning never having to deal with all these companies and now having to set up all the new accounts for things such as electricity, gas and water I found this company particularly tiresome to deal with.
We were meant to phone up on the day we moved in to the new flat and pass over all the readings on the meters and the correct information to set up new accounts and the such like. I had no problems at all when contacting the water supplier and the electricity supplier but when it came to the gas this was more of a problem that I could of dreamed.
After phoning up the main line for British...

A man with a plan, a big moustache and some big big mosques
Advantages: Fabulous insights into one of history's great leaders
Disadvantages: No realy heart-stopping block-buster items
...'Shah Abbas: The Remaking of Iran' is the British Museum's latest 'blockbuster' exhibition and the third in their series of exhibitions on great leaders. Shah Abbas is in good company and follows in the footsteps of the first Chinese Emperor (he of the Terracotta Army) and the Roman Emperor Hadrian. Apparently the fourth in the great leader series will be Montezuma later this year.
The exhibition opened on February 19th to a fanfare of publicity. I knew it was coming a long time ago because I subscribe to the British Museum's e-mailing list and I've been looking forward to the exhibition for months. I thought that was probably just me being a bit weird and a bit obsessed with Iran ? I didn't seriously expect that many other people would be as excited as me. I also didn't expect it to be so well publicised. There are posters EVERYWHERE...

Ponterfact Museum, West Yorkshire
Advantages: Free entry, plenty to see and do
Disadvantages: Not everyones idea of a fun day out
...Pontefract's museum is located within an impressive art nouveau building that dates from 1904. This building was originally the Carnegie Free Library and even today it still has the feel of a library about it, although in other places it also reminded me of an old school building. It is located right in the heart of the town centre, adjacent to the parish church and close to the market and is therefore very easy to find.
I usually try and make a point of visiting museums when I am in area as they are an excellent way of finding out about an area and they are usually free to visit. Pontefract's museum is no exception to this rule as it is both free and a great place to discover all about the towns rich history.
The building that houses the museum is set out on two different floors but most of the exhibits are on the lower floor. As...

Switzerland's Only Museum for Potheads
Advantages: If you like pots, it's the best place in Switzerland
Disadvantages: If you don't like pots and glass, this probably isn't for you
...Serendipity - it's a great word, isn't it? One online dictionary defines it as "The faculty of making fortunate discoveries by accident" and I'm a fan of such accidental discoveries. Our most recent was the Musee Ariana in Geneva. What's the chance that my husband and I, wandering around looking for the Red Cross museum and the United Nations building, will stumble across museum dedicated to two arts that we're passionate about? We love glass and we particularly love ceramics and as we walked from the bus stop to the Red Cross museum we just happened to see the signs for the Musee Ariana. As luck would have it this is the only museum in the whole of Switzerland that's devoted to ceramics and glass. And it's FREE! Truly the gods were smiling down on us that Sunday afternoon.
For our friends who were with us, it was a bit less...

The Old Curiosity (Shop) Museum
Advantages: Fascinating collection, creatively displayed
Disadvantages: Challenges your ideas of how a museum should display things
...The Pitt Rivers Museum is a treasure chest of the weird and wonderful and should be a compulsory must-see place for every tourist visiting Oxford but sadly, it rarely is. Consequently those of us who know and love this quirky little museum are sometimes torn between the desire to sell its joys to the world and to keep it as our own special little secret. But on this occasion I'll take the risk of the place filling up and tell you about it.
The Pitt Rivers is a place you need to know exists in order to find it. It's not widely publicised and you won't see it from the street because it's tucked away at the back of its sister museum, the much grander and more blousy Oxford University Museum of Natural History. Take a look at the photo Ciao have used. That's the OUMNH and it's gorgeous. The Pitt Rivers is like an untidy cupboard hiding...
