...We haved travelled to France six times in the last 8 years and each time we have chosen to use Brittany Ferries for our crossing. This is more to do with the fact that they service the crossings we want to use rather than a conscious decision over other operators. We usually travel to the West side of France and the Calais crossing and the tunnel require longer drives for us on both sides of the Channel. Brittany ferries operate from Portsmouth, Poole, Plymouth and Cork and travel to Caen, St Malo, Cherbourg, Roscoff and Santander. I have always booked my tickets as part of a package with my campsite accomodation with various tour operators so I am not sure how much each crossing costs but the crossings can also be booked direct from their website: www.brittanyferries.com . Stoned in Brittany

Advantages: An amazing, mysterious place.
Disadvantages: You cannot get near the stones.

I first visited this as a very young child and there is somewhere a picture of me sitting on a megalith aged about four. Brittany Ferries ~ hotels and holidays too!

Advantages: excellent customer support and booking advice service
Disadvantages: not a lot for 'tweenagers' to do on board the ferries

Murphy's War against a disappointing film

Advantages: Stunning visuals
Disadvantages: Lacklustre throughout

...Filmed in and around the stunning setting of the Orinoco River in Venezuela, Murphy's War is a 1971 film starring Peter O'Toole as Irishman Murphy, the only survivor of a German U-Boat attack on a merchant ship. It is set towards the end of World War 2. Murphy is rescued by Louis Brezon (Philippe Noiret) and attended to by the lovely Dr Hayden (Sian Phillips), a Quaker who opposes the war and is working in a mission. Revenge is on Murphy's mind, and when he discovers an old abandoned seaplane, he sets about finding the whereabouts of the nearby U-Boat, and plans ways to destroy it, revenging the rest of his crew. I find that war films either hit or miss, and it generally depends on the plot and how it is attacked. Fab ferry to Brittany

Advantages: Excellent entertainment and facillities on board, especially for children.
Disadvantages: The only disadvantage for me is the three hour drive to plymouth.

Dervla Murphy- what a lady!

Brittany Ferries Plymouth to Santander

Disadvantages: Very uncomfortable journey if travelling with toddlers and luggage

...We have travelled from Plymouth to Santander with Brittany Ferries on several occasions. The service has always been punctual and the staff on board helpful. The cabins are quite unconfortable and very, very small. They are probably okay for passengers with no luggage. But if you have to carry luggage into your cabin you will struggle to move. If you have to use a cot you will have no floor space. With regards to children Brittany Ferries provide cots for children up to 12months of age. After that, and until they are old enough to sleep in a bed without falling off the edge, they have to either sleep in a bed with a parent (the beds are very narrow), sleep on the floor or the family will have to provide their own travel cot. Surprising Picture Quality - Panasonic DVD-S54

Advantages: Incredible picture quality when compared to my old non-upscaling player with a scart lead
Disadvantages: Sometimes disc drive can be really noisy when DVD's initially load.

...At first I wasn't convinced by up-scaling DVD player technology but was persuaded after reading an article in "What Hi-Fi? Sound and Vision" magazine. Unable to afford a Blu-Ray player my sister and I bought the Panasonic DVD-S54 to match our parents brand new Panasonic TX-32LZD80 LCD television as their Christmas 2008 present. Admittedly it was a slightly selfish purchase as we both live at home and wanted to watch DVDs on the big new TV ourselves! We bought the player from the electrical retailer Comet for about £100 just before Christmas so there were no discounts applied. On Christmas day when opened we found a relatively small box tightly packed with the player in polystyrene packaging.
