...I only intend this opinion to cover the options available, using my own experience as a previous dial-up and subsequently as a broadband customer for background. What it is NOT, is an endorsement of one company?s service. WHAT?S AVALABLE? Basically, there are two main types of broadband service. Probably the most common is ADSL, the Asymmetric Digital Services Line, so called because its download speed is faster than its upload speed, hence ?asymmetric?. They worked out a while back, that unless you run an Internet server from home, a slower upload speed was of little consequence, except for e-mail file attachments (and pictures for Ciao opinions!). NTL Broadband internet, Surf or Sinker

Advantages: Good value and ability to combine your TV, Phone Line, and internet charges into one bill
Disadvantages: Hard to understand packages and billing

...After having NTL's dial up internet for some time, which was OK, I decided to go digital. I opted for the triple digital package, which includes phone line, Broadband internet, and television service. I got a letter from NTL saying my Cable modem would arrive in a few days. Ten days later I was still waiting and quite frustrated as I was paying for this service before I even got it, so I phoned them up. Anyway it turned out nobody had ordered my Modem. So to be fair they had one sent out in the next couple of days from a firm who supplys them. I recieved the modem which is a terayon cable modem. You can either rent these or buy them for around £100, through ntl. Broadband Sneaks

Advantages: No longer a reliable broadband service
Disadvantages: Reduce download speed if they can get away with it
