BT voyager 210 broadband modem

Advantages: Easy to install
Disadvantages: Beware: Won't last much longer than 12 months

...I got this BT voyager 210 router from MADASAFISH when I subscribed to their broadband service back in 2006 as a 'free' router (you have paid them back + admin charges if you switch or unsubscribe before the 12 months contract is due). It comes as shown in the picture in the box, quite generours: one wired router, TWO ADSL microfilters, one AC adaptor, one ADSL telco cable, 1 USB cable, 1 Ethernet cable, one CD-ROM (with installation guide, user manual, driver and utilties), one small piece of quick installation guide. This modem supports ADSL2 as well however I haven't got ADSL2 i.e. not tested. The basic installation is quite easy: connection the modem to the phone socket according to instructions. BT : 'Now That's What I Call Broadband!'

Advantages: Free wireless router and phone, fast and reliable, excellent technical support, value for money!
Disadvantages: Too many options to speak to someone on the phone.

I signed up to a wireless package, that offered me a free wireless router, worth £50, for £14.99 for the first three months, after the initial three months this then rises to £22.99 a month. AOL Broadband

Advantages: Good Speeds
Disadvantages: Bloody call centres

...and talk to "Sanja" Hurray someone honest, it didn't last I am afraid, what a joke this chap reckons its my Sky interfering with AOL? He said AOL should only be the only thing in the main phone socket, and he says it is definitely sky's fault sending data down my line? I said for 5 hours you're telling me sky is stealing my bandwidth he says YES....so I disconnect my sky and my phone and try it...still the same. I decide enough is enough and tell him to put me through to someone so I can cancel my AOL broadband. Broadband Sneaks

Advantages: No longer a reliable broadband service
Disadvantages: Reduce download speed if they can get away with it

My package also includes Post Office Home Phone so the review also includes a few details about the phone line service. The monthly charge for my phone line and broadband is roughly £22 for the whole package. I now see that the same package is available for £19.95. They offer various packages that you can check on their website www.postoffice.co.uk. My package includes monthly phone line rental and the broadband service and is a twelve months contract. Broadband Modem at its simplest

...I recevied this modem for free as part of signing up to Virgin broadband through my BT line. It comes in a small box along with the driver dc,filter for the phone line,instruction manual,the phone cable and the unit itself. In order to install this your pc must have a usb port and a cd drive as you need to install the driver. The easiest way to install it is to first of all install the software driver which you can do very easily by simply inserting the CD into your cd drive and then running it. It takes a few minutes to install the software and then it will prompt you to connect the modem to your pc by USB. Once you've done this,it will set it up automatically for you and then it will create a shortcut on your desktop. ...We have had AOL broadband now for just over a year and despite an initail problem with them over them charging me for 2 modems I am pretty impressed. 512k broadband costs £27.99 a month but if for any reason you have to use dial up you are charged on pay as you go at about 2p a minute. Another option is to have Broadband plus which costs £34.99 a month you still get unlimited dial up as well, useful if you use a computer away from home a lot. There is also a 1mb connection for £34.99 a month. These costs are for always on, unlimited usage. There is (at the moment) no set up or connection fees and you get a free modem. line filters, and webcam. AOL ? A Grand Brand In Broadband Land

It is worth saying that all of the equipment in the AOL broadband pack, such as modem and filters, is completely free; yes you have to sign up for a minimum of twelve months but I believe this is standard across the board, and after the twelve month contract is up you keep the modem as your own. With a cooling off period of twenty days when you first sign up to the service the risks are minimal. However, you do need to have a credit card to sign up with AOL which could prove troublesome to some, and I think if I had the choice myself I would rather pay by direct debit, but this is not an option at present.
