HL 2040 Black and White Laser printer review

Advantages: Small, Cheap
Disadvantages: Errrr not many really.

...This is a nice toy. Entirly functional admitedly but its good at what it does. Its one of those items that just works flawlessly. You know when you want something to do its job when its told to and sit quietly in the corner for the rest of the time. (Unlike windows) this printer does it. It is described as a Compact personal printer and it definatley is. In my house it is networked (via a print server, while you can get the 2040N its double the price I paid) and has never had any issues with the high workload of 6 final year degree students using it as their main printing source. When printing text it is at its best but also does a good job on images of any sort, sadley as with all lasers an particularly dark images don't come out very well. (but atleast you don't get saturated paper, unlike inkjets) As it has a 96Mhz processor...

Advantages: small and tidy reasonable cost per copy
Disadvantages: limited memory and small feed tray

...a pretty useless manual feed as do most of these little printers for heavier cardstock. ease of use:- This is a snap pop in the cd and follow the instructions. as far as i know it works on all versions of windows i have only tried it on win xp and mac os x no problems in either. value:- 2.5 pence per printed page on average for the drum and toner is what i have gotten from this machine. the printer only costs between £60-80 so it is a bargain. it is lasting very well printed 1000's of pages on it. overall:- very good little printer for very small run printing....

Brother HL5240 laser printer

Advantages: Good all round laser printer, loads of pros
Disadvantages: very few, if any

I bought it for around £150 but the prices come anywhere between £140 and £220 from verious online retailers or some high street stores. ...One of my favourite things about the company brother is how cheap there ink is, this is actually one of the main things I look into when buying printers and printers like Lexmark hp and cannons ink are all really expensive. Especially compared to brother, brother ink isn’t as available as most other makes of printers however you can get it a lot cheaper if you buy online and can usually pick up all 4 ink cartridges off eBay for well under £10 whereas other ink cartridges can cost up to £40 for a full pack of four which is just ridiculous especially when you consider you can get a printer for this price which comes with free ink so it would just be cheaper to buy a new printer every time you run out of ink. We use Brother printers at work so I thought I would try a home version. I'm running Windows XP so turned to the relevant page in the manual. The manual has a sort of spider diagram on the front making it very easy to find the pages you want based on your operating system and connection method weather that be USB, parallel or ethernet. FANTASTIC BROTHER HL-1230 BLACK & WHITE LASER PRINTER

Advantages: TOTALLY RELIABLE, VERY ECONOMICAL, UNOBTRUSIVE
Disadvantages: NONE

...My daughter bought this printer for her office (she does accountancy & bookkeeping) about SIX years ago. She upgraded to a more powerful model after two years (Brother of course) and we now have the original as the main printer for the main home computer - it is black and white, but we don't have any call for colour. Having, in the past had FOUR so-called excellent printers, by HP, Lexmark, et al , which required ink cartridges, I can only say that the Brother HL-1230 leaves them all standing at the starting gate. It is only on its second toner cartridge and we do a fair amount of printing. There is also the fact that with a laser printer there are no ink cartridges to dry out. The initial monetary outlay may be a little more but is more than compensated for by not having to buy ink cartridges, which do not last anywhere...

...The Brother HL-1050 is a fairly good laser printer. I've had mine for just over two years and in that time I've had no problems with it until recently. It can be connected via either parallel port or USB, comes with 4MB of memory and has a claimed print speed of 10ppm with a maximum resolution of 1200x600dpi. It is fast and handles text superbly and graphics adaquately. Toner cartridges are twenty five quid a throw and last a couple of thousand pages (I think) depending on print density and stuff like that. The printer driver offers a useful little window that opens and tells you the status of the printer (if it's asleep, if the toner is low, if the paper is jammed, etc).
