Swimming pool
Advantages: something new
Disadvantages: can be seen only on the film festivals
..."Swimming Pool", film seen first time at Cannes Film Festival 2003, sees France and Europe on most decadent, daring and inventive way. Francois Ozon writer and film director strikes again with this time British actress, Charlotte Rampling. Sarah Morton (Rampling) is a famous British mystery author. Tired of London, seeking inspiration for her new novel, she accepts an offer from her publisher John Bosload (Charles Dance) to stay at his home in middle of nowhere in France. It is early off-season, so Sarah hopes to find the beautiful country inspiring – until late one night, when John’s wild French daughter Julie (Sagnier) unexpectedly arrives. Sarah is at first, more than English-alike reserve, finding Julie reckless and sexually charged lifestyle repulsive. Their interactions set off an increasingly unsettling series...

Knickerless in Bruges!
Advantages: A good small and friendly hotel with excellent service. Great location too!
Disadvantages: Steep (very) stairs to bedrooms.
...During our recent trip to Belgium we stayed in Bruges. We had never stayed there before and, when planning the trip, didn?t know any hotels to base our decision on which to pick on. Our group was quite large (there were to be 17 of us in total) so we needed a decent sized place, but not in a huge and impersonal hotel. We also wanted to be well located in the centre of Bruges, but not too far away from the railway station (or at least easy to get to by public transport). So the criteria was small(ish), friendly, clean, good location, decent breakfast, good transport links and not too expensive. Were we asking too much? Our trip organiser (who was also in charge of transport) had a scout around and came up with the Hotel Nicolas.
~~~WHERE IS IT?
The Hotel Nicolas can be found at 9 Niklaas Desparsstraat in the centre of Bruges...
Historic Hotel in Bruges
Advantages: Very Central, Attractive Listed Building, Good Facilities
Disadvantages: Part of a Chain and Past its Prime...
...unfortunate tendency to make use of hotel mini-bars, something that can send any hotel bill skyrocketing, especially when a single G&T sets you back 10 Euros. It's perhaps worth mentioning that there's a very comprehensive little newsagent/off-license just around the corner from the Hotel Navarra, so you can always stock up there (or even re-stock the mini bar yourself & save a small fortune) if you're that way inclined?
Other than the facilities mentioned, all rooms also have a radio, two direct dial telephones, an in-room safe, a trouser press, hairdryer and air-conditioning. Complimentary newspapers are available on request. There is a health centre in the basement, with a gym, spa, sauna, steam room, and an exquisite, tiled pool.
The location of the hotel is such that most of central Bruges' attractions are right on your doorstep...
Bath University Swimming Pool
Advantages: 50m means lots of pool space.
Disadvantages: Small female changing rooms and limited spectator seating for large competitions
...I have swam at this pool a number of times for various competitions. There are some excellent things about it - The top one being that it is an Olympic sized swimming pool (50m) and there is a severe lack of those in Britain compared to other European countries.Being a 50m pool makes it excellent to train in as there is more space for swimmers in each lane. It is also good for long course swimming competitions. Furthermore, the water temperature is just right when I have been there and is not too hot and not too cold. Bath is not one of the most accessible cities although the pool is only a 10 min bus ride from Bath train station.
However, there are some negative aspects to it - one being that there is not a large amount of seating in the spectator galleries so hosting big competitions here would be a problem. Also the girls changing...
olympic size swimming pools
Advantages: more chance to compete with the best
Disadvantages: not many
...If you were in a quiz, and the question master asked, “where in Britain can you find an Olympic size swimming pool built to the standard of the Sydney Olympic pool”. Come on answer please.
Well I couldn’t answer the question. People wonder why our swimmers don’t win many medals, or break world records. How are we expected to compete with the rest of the world, unless we build the proper facilities for our athletes? We have the coaches; we have the talent, why doesn’t the Lottery build the right size pools around the country to give our swimmers the opportunity to compete against the best. ....
Harbouring a hotel........ Poole
Advantages: Excellent Views, Good value for money (when we stayed n e way)
Disadvantages: The heat, rooms very warm
...We recently stayed at the Thistle Hotel in Poole and have to say that of the many hotels we have stayed this must rank amongst the top 5. Based right on the harbour, and I mean right on it, about 20 feet, the view of the boats coming / going, the yachts and the general ambience of the place was excellent. Our room on the second floor was spacious with a separate seating area and very clean. The bed was good to firm and storage was exceptional, good storage was needed as the wife insisted on taking 16, yes sixteen different tops for a two night stay. The bathroom was light and airy and the room in generally had all the things you expect, i.e. Trouser Press, Shower, Bath, Iron, Hair Drier etc etc..
Of all the good things there are, as always, a couple of drawbacks. Firstly was the heat, it was just so warm in the hotel in...
in bruges
Advantages: wonderful acting, good story and great scene variation, nice town also
Disadvantages: the ending was predictable based on characterisation
...of some of the streets, a museum, buildings, the train, a hotel as well as a late evening?s view from the top of a tower.
the plot
two hit men sent to bruges from london. one of them wants to leave Bruges and the other does not mind the place and quite likes it. ray clearly shows his emotions that he does not want to stay two weeks in bruges with Ken. throughout most of the film harry (the evil boss who hires the two assassins), he only joins the film once he discovers that ken has killed a little boy. harry largely communicates via telephone. killing a priest is one thing, though killing a little boy is another story.
film review
early on in the film there is a street play taking place where he notices a dwarf chap called jimmy, and also meets chloe (a gorgeous blonde young woman).
Asides from the moments of sadness...
experience at this hotel
Advantages: views, service, staff
Disadvantages: room , old , needs updating
...i stayed at this hotel over the winter period of 2008 , and i just found this place to be the worst hotel i hadf ever stayed in , dont get me wrong the staff were great but the standard of my room was horrible , out of date tatty and the restraunt wasnt so up to date either , service was great , the views were amazing and the locals were very fiendly, the hotel is based next to the quay side in poole over looking the second biggest natural harbour in the world , with the national park (brownsea island ) in view it is a place you need to see , overall i did enjoy my stay here even though there was no heating in my room and i was brought an elecric heater as a replacement i payed £89 for a single room , i would like to say this is a great place for familys that like a quite restfull holiday with a peaceful atmosphere, thistle hotel...
A Gratuitous Study in Dull, Soft-Core Pornmaking
Advantages: Nice shots of pool; glimpses of the Luberon region.
Disadvantages: Sophomoric acting, gratuitous nudity, sex, story - in short, a gratuitous movie!
...Of the few films I've seen by French director François Ozon, it has been more miss than hit with me so far. I was intrigued by 'Under the Sand/Sous le sable' (2002), the stark yet strangely moving portrayal of a middle-aged woman who finally comes to terms with her husband's sudden and inexplicable disappearance while on holiday at the beach. It was an interesting film that played like an open-ended Hitchcockian mystery.
The only miss for me until now was the much-lauded ' 8 Women', a musical murder mystery farce that nonetheless failed to deliver on all counts, despite the game presence of some high wattage French stars like Catherine Deneuve, Isabelle Huppert and Emanuelle Béart.
Now comes 'Swimming Pool', a film pretending to be a mystery thriller that essentially makes much ado about…nothing. The tale centres on what happens...
Friendliest hotel in town
Advantages: Cheap, friendly staff, great food
Disadvantages: No bathroom doors!
...This is a great little European hotel - I would definitely recommend it for a city break in this wonderful city!
We recently stayed here for my first wedding anniversary. We booked through Last Minute.com and got a package including first class Eurostar, and three nights bed and breakfast here for £190 each which was great value. We did pay the extra £6 for a canal view room and as it is right on the canal this is well worth it!
The hotel is centrally located - so much so that you have the tour boats going right past your bedroom. It is walkable from the station and about 5 minutes from the main square.
The hotel has been recently done up so is really smart - we had a lovely downstairs right on the canal (you had to shut your curtains or the boat tours could see in) - I checked when we did our boat tour!!!
The only problem...
