A Werewolf in London Part 2
Advantages: audio tour
Disadvantages: toilets only available at the end of the tour
...NAME OF LOCATION: Buckingham Palace, perhaps the most famous building in the world, one of the London homes of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and her consort, HRH the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip.
BACKGROUND: Buckingham Palace State Rooms have been open since the early 1990s. My parents went to see them during the Golden Jubilee year celebrations and I had tried to get on Gee Vee Travel?s next trip that year, but it was fully booked. However, I fully intended to book a trip as soon as I saw it being offered again. Which is why, I booked this in January! The trips were available on several dates but we chose to go on the last Saturday available: 25 September as it was just a few weeks after Robert?s 30th birthday!
ATTRACTIONS:
State Rooms: Open Daily from Open 31 July - 26 September 2004, when the Queen is at one of her other...

Opulance and splendour - who'd have thought!
Advantages: A must for Royalists and those interested in architecture, history, antiquities and historic interior design
Disadvantages: Tiring, a lot of walking
...We visited Buckingham Palace last year during our trip to London. This was part of our plan to show our children their heritage and teach them a little about what it means to ?be British?.
The first bit of advice I would give is to pre-book your tickets, preferably for around lunchtime. If you plan your day in advance you can ensure you are there for the changing of the horse guard (they don?t do it every day). You can watch the pomp and ceremony before embarking on your tour of the palace. The other advantage being that if you pick the hottest day of the year (as we did) you don?t have to stand for hours at the ticket booth, you get to walk straight in, which is cool.
Once the whole party are gathered you are lead through to another room where you are furnished with an audio guide. This guide is essential if you really want...

Queen's Gallery, a treasure on show
Advantages: Seeing treasures Queen holds in trust for nation
Disadvantages: Having to pay
...ticket you also gain admittance to the Royal Mews just along the road a bit.
To book online go to http://www.royal.gov.uk/output/Page8.asp and follow the prompts for Queen's Gallery bookings. OR, go in the morning and choose a time later in the day, that's what I did and I only had to wait until 1.30pm.
The Main entrance is on Buckingham Palace Road, it cost adults 8 pounds and children 5 pounds.
I was entranced with the Faberge Collection and the thing that struck me the most was that if the Queen's Gallery did not exist we would never have seen these beautiful, historic and precious pieces.
Do visit the Queen's Gallery, it is great to see things you would not normally see and so well presented.
Just before I finish, I must share this other little memory, not a royal one but amusing to me: I've always heard how the Queen...

Thistle Hotel Kensington Palace London
Advantages: Location
Disadvantages: 2 star hotel and it deserves them
...the corridor cupboard doors have a leatherette cladding, the ones on our corridor were very obviously peeling away from the doors and looked tatty.
Our room door stuck and had to be slammed shut.
The bathroom extractor fan did not work hence the peeling paint on the bathroom ceiling.
Glazing was poor with lots of street noise able to come into the room.
Lumpy pillows.
Good bits.
The breakfast was wholesome and fresh, the pork and leek sausages were lovely.
The resaurant although looked clean felt sterile with no atmosphere.
Maid service was good. Nice clean towels.
Good location right opposite Kensington Palace and just along form Hyde Park.
15 minutes walk from Harrods and Harvey Nichols, Knightsbridge.
2 minutes walk from Kensington High Street and Tube Station....

the queen, the queen, and the queen
Advantages: free entrance
Disadvantages: anything other than the queen, you can't find it here
...everything about the queen, you can get it here. buy anything with the queen's face here. that's my first impression about this place.
it is not very big. packed with small small stuff and trinkets. i was in there after a hot day waiting in front of the buckingham palace, hoping that any royals would maybe, just maybe open a window and show their face. well, none did. so i saw this tiny little so-called gallery and went into it. it's cooler, i must say. and got loads of interesting stuff, with the queen's face or name on it. i saw princess diana face somewhere as well. that's all. a great place to be after a hot day waiting....

A comfortable night or two.
Advantages: Clean, well sized rooms, brilliant location.
Disadvantages: Not a brilliant breakfast and lots of stairs.
...This hotel is very easy to find from Victoria station with it being just down the streets.
It is very close to a number of local resteraunts including nandos and a los mexicanos which we actually dined in and was excellent. There is also a corner shop nearby and a very large Sainsburys round the corner.
Also, within walking distance is buckingham palace, the london eye, the palace mews, big ben, the houses of parliament and much more, so even if you dont want to use the underground there is a lot to walk to.
The hotel has easy access to the local train station, Victoria where you can get almost anywhere in mainstream London from with hardly any changes.
The initial impression the hotel gives is that it is very classy with its beautiful, but not large reception area where you are greeted by staff who seem happy to help...

Buckingham University costly but worth it.
Advantages: Quick degree, Student:staff ratio, friendly atmosphere, diverse culture experience
Disadvantages: A bit more expensive, quiet town
...The University of Buckingham is a small and quaint, private University. These facts often seem to turn people off looking further into going here but they don?t know what they are missing out on. A similar structure to how Universities used to be and similar to a number of American Universities, Buckingham has small classes, often less than ten people, and courses run through the summer. This is not such a bad thing, as you will finish your course in two years instead of three for a normal Bachelors degree or three years for a Masters.
The University offers a wide range of degrees, for example I.T., Accounting, Law, Business, Languages, Economics and a lot more besides. And a good point about the courses is that you are able to start in either July or January, giving the chance for a whole year out or half of a year out if you don...

Henry's House
Advantages: Interesting, history, demonstrations
Disadvantages: None
...Last weekend I had a friend visiting from Holland and so decided to show her a bit of culture from this wonderful country of ours. I had wanted to go to Hampton Court for a while and now seemed like a perfect time.
Hampton Court is a Royal Palace known for its most famous resident Henry 8th. It was originally built for Cardinal Wolsey, a favourite of King Henry VIII, circa 1514; and later, as Wolsey fell from favour, the palace was passed to the King, who enlarged it. It is a Tudor style palace. The following century the palace was occupied by William and Mary.
I have to admit that I was most interested in the Tudor period with Henry 8th. There is so much history in this building including various deaths of his many wives and rumoured hauntings.
Hampton Court is located next to the River Thames in the South West of London...

A Palace of History
Advantages: Beautiful rooms; Historical'; loads to see
Disadvantages: Huge!!
...Hampton Court Palace is about one of the 60 palaces built for King Henry VIII in about 1513. In my opinion, it must be the grandest and mightiest of all the Palaces with over 1100 rooms, acres upon acres of garden, mazes, tennis and bowling courts.
It is located next to the River Thames in London. It took me, my mum and step-dad just 1 1/2 to drive there from Portsmouth. The castle is relatively well signposted and it's mainly straight road and motor way with few confusing turn-off's but then again, this is only relavant from where I am travelling from. We passed through some lovely old villages on the way so the journey was pleasing. You can also catch the train of course - the station is basically right next to it!
When you arrive, there is a car park of which, you pay for on departing. It costs £3.50 for 3 hours and an extra 50p...

Henry's House!
Advantages: Get to learn about where Henry VIII lived
Disadvantages: The info is easily accessible elsewhere - Internet
...On Saturday 1st August, I went to Hampton Court Palace. I have never been before and it is somewhere I have been very interested in visiting. This is mainly because I love history, monarchs, especially Henry VIII and architecture.
What better place to visit than Henry's house (or one of them) in the lovely area of Surrey. I must admit my ammunition after all this time to finally go was after watching channel 4's Henry - Mind of a Tyrant and a Time Team special on Henry/Hampton Court Palace.
The Location
-----------------
Hampton Court Palace is located in Surrey, on the banks of the River Thames. It is within the M25 and not far from the start of M3 and the M4. There are brown attraction signs located from the M25 signposted throughout the route to Hampton Court Palace.
