Buffalo LinkStation Live - Easy Network Storage

Advantages: Easy access to files, claim back computer hard drive space
Disadvantages: Not as fast as a USB2 or Firewire hard drive

Over the past week I have been testing the LinkStation Live from Buffalo Technologies. It is availble in sizes up to 1TB. This compact box contains a SATA hard drive and sports a nice front panel with informative status LED's up front. Around the back of the unit you plug in your power cable (the power supply is in the unit itself, so no external brick). The back also sports the 10/100/1000 Mbps ethernet socket, so it is nice to see that Gigabit speeds are supported. When viewing the back you can also see a vent, behind this hides a tiny fan for cooling purposes. In use, you can definitely hear the fan, but is is very quiet, so not intrusive at all. Buffalo Linkstation Pro Duo LS-W2.0TGL/R1

Advantages: Very fast, high capacity.
Disadvantages: Pricey, may be outlived by long-life Blu-ray discs.

Once the Linkstation is powered up it's configuration time and this involves installing the NASNavigator2 package or using the web-interface. The Navigator package is probably the easier option unless you have the option of allocating a known IP address to the devices mac address somewhere in your router configuration. Still the navigator program is actually a joy to use and will let you configure a static IP for the device if necessary. It also displays the devices IP address, subnet mask, gateway, mac address and firmware version in its display panel; along with the devices raid status, used space and total capacity. In addition to this, we have an ever growing music collection, and it made sense to put it all together on one disk. ...buffalo springfield is the debut album from the rock and roll hall of famers, featuring folk rock giants stephen stills and neil young. this album features an ecletic mix of 12 tracks including the famous 'for what its worth'. the rest of the songs are perhaps not as instantly recognisable but in general the quality of the songs is very good. there is a good mix between laid back folk-rock such as 'hot dusty roads', 'out of my mind' and 'do i have to come right out and say it' to the frenetic blues of 'leave' and everything in between. lyrically this album is very good as all the songs are either stills or young originals and the musicianship is very solid if not groundbreaking. stephen stills exerts the most influence on this album, taking lead vocals or lead guitar on the majority of tracks.
