Advantages: Situated in the heart of Burgos, superbly renovated, great value for money
Disadvantages: None that I could find!

...When we visited northern Spain a couple of years ago, Burgos was right at the top of the list of places to visit. This beautifully preserved medieval town is a fascinating destination, and not just for the many pilgrims who visit the imposing cathedral on their way to Santiago de Compostela along the Way of St. James (wandering around the old town, you will notice many of the scallop symbols set into the pavement or into the walls of houses to guide the faithful along the right path). Our stay at the Abba Burgos hotel was without doubt a highlight of the three days we spent in Burgos - it's not often that I would say that about a hotel but this one really was excellent. I had booked on the internet without knowing anything much about the hotel - in fact, Abba Hoteles run a number of establishments across Spain and have also opened one...

They Are Not the Greatest

Advantages: They have some world class players. Experienced
Disadvantages: Spoiling tactics. Defence is at times suspect

Honour Amongst Rogues

Advantages: Brilliant and original story
Disadvantages: Running out of battles to fight

The scene were Sharpe meets Ducos in Burgos castle has alot of power and the hatred between the two men is obvious and entertaining to see. Also the closing action, set amongst the plunder of Vitoria, is one of the best passages by Cornwell I've read and also details one of the most 'stand out' moments of the entire campaign, when the under-paid and under-priviledged men of the British army found themselves amongst the unguarded baggage of the French army and the biggest spoils of war for several hundred years. As usual Cornwell also gives us, in the epilogue, the true historic facts of this time period and I am always amazed by how well he manages to fit entertaining fiction around true life events. My only slight negative about this novel is that because Sharpe is on his own...

I know what you're thinking - why would an incredibly thirsty Scotsman travel to the middle of Spain just to visit a Scottish pub? The answer's simple - in fact it's so simple, I won't embarrass you by typing it. Inevitably, the pub was as Caledonian as a bodega in Burgos, but what it did have going for it was it's stock of over 100 (yes that's right, 100) different types of bottles of beer from around the world...MICHTY ME!
