I'm not a Butter-nut but I love this!
Advantages: Healthy; toffee sweet wthout fat or calories; versatile; delicious
Disadvantages: Expensive if paid for by weight; not available all year round :(
...Arr, I have in the past 6 months since they were in season (winter time), found an undying passion for Butternut Squash. I actually always buy mine from Aldi because you can get anysize for just 49p so obviously I always hunt for the super sized squash.
So, what is it. Well - it certainly stands out in the veg section let me tell you. They come in a variety of shapes, (some slightly rude looking I might add) but the norm is a bell shape; thick rounded bottom progressively getting thinner towards the top. They are a creamy colour with faint green lines running down the edges. They are very heavy so watch out if you are paying by the pound (as in weight). The flesh is very firm and smooth to touch but a severe amount of battering would pierce it (er not that you'd want to do this unless you were pratising karate chopping or something...

Butternut Squash and is Many Uses
Advantages: Healthy alternative to Starch vetables
Disadvantages: Can be expensive
...I purchase all my fresh vetables from Asda and to date have never had a problem, I suffer very badly from food allergies and live on a very limited diet, but the Butternut Squash is one of my staple vetables it is versatile, fat free, low in calories and tastes so good as it has a sweet flavour but is not as sugary as sweet potatoes.
Squash can be:
Baked
Fried,
Roasted,
Boiled
It's general price is around the £1.85 per KG mark depending on where you purchase it, but luckily it comes in all sizes so if you are just starting or want a taster you can buy a small one, they can be a bit fiddly to prepare but well worth it.
As a buying guide ensure you purchase a squash that has not got a large bell at the bottom try and get the ones that are either straight or with only a slight bulb as the bigger the bulb the more you loose as...

Squash & Peppers to Make Me Feel Better!
Advantages: Gorgeous taste, low fat, low calories, brand I trust
Disadvantages: Ring pull came off in my hand
...I haven?t been too well lately and have been moping around the house feeling a bit sorry for myself. Towards the end of last week, I was feeling particularly down in the dumps and couldn?t be bothered to cook myself anything extravagant to eat, but was feeling a little peckish. It was a toss-up between scrambling myself some eggs or opening a can of something ? the eggs lost (as I?d given the last of the milk to the cat) and the can won!
I scrounged around amongst the various tins in my cupboard and stumbled across a forgotten tin of Baxter?s Butternut Squash and Red Pepper Soup. I didn?t feel like anything particularly ?heavy? and decided that this was probably a good option ? anyway, the picture on the front looked quite appealing, as it shows a lovely large bowl of creamy soup, topped with red peppers and a sprig of thyme...

Yummy Butternut Squash Soup
Advantages: Tasty, easy to make
Disadvantages: Butternut squash can be a little expensive
...I recently returned to Weight Watchers to help try and shift some of my post-baby weight, my baby is now 18 months and I think it is about time I regained some sort of healthy body shape. I have tried Weight Watchers before and found it to be a useful way to control my eating and therefore lead to weight loss. I find the Weight Watchers points system a good way for me to keep track of my eating and I like the idea of having free foods that will help keep me satisfied but will not count towards my daily food allowance. I had previously made the ?free soups? and found these to be tasty and filling so I was pleased to see that there were still some recipes for free soups in the new programme.
I didn?t fancy some of the chunkier soups and was looking for something a bit lighter and I happened upon a recipe for Butternut Squash and Red...

Anyone for Squash?
Advantages: Tasty, healthy, handy to keep in freezer, fairly simple to cook, price
Disadvantages: No microwave instructions, not particularly filling
...***The description on the pack***
"A delicious combination of butternut squash, cashew nuts, peanuts & almonds served with a tangy oven roasted tomato sauce"
***Why I chose this product***
I was in Sainsbury's and wanted to get a few tasty things for the freezer. I was looking at the veggie stuff, such as Linda Mcartney pies and the like, and was put off by the list of unfamiliar and unappetizing ingredients. I was drawn to the rather swish looking (for frozen food) packaging of the Goodlife Butternut Squash Roasts and was REALLY PLEASANTLY SURPRISED TO FIND A LIST OF INGREDIENTS THAT I RECOGNISED AND SOUNDED APPETISING.
***Cooking***
Simple to cook?
Cooking time (For best results cook from frozen)
The Roasts?
200C/400F/Gas mark 6 for 30-35 minutes
Sauce?
Place sachet in pan of boiling water and boil for 3 minutes until...

Chicken and Butternut Squash Curry
Advantages: A great easy to make supper
Disadvantages: As with all cooking, someone needs to wash up!
...I love experimenting with my cooking and usually cook from scratch. This means that whatever I have in the cupboard gets chucked in a pan and if the results are good I will make that dish again. If not then I know that I will not then I won't bother with that combination again. For example tinned hot dog sausage and cheese risotto is heaven, but olive, salami and egg quiche is not that nice!
Using the "chuck it in and see method" was how I discovered what has become my very favorite curry ever. I have repeated this recipe on many occasion now and it is well tried and tested. Therefore I decided to share my Chicken and Butternut Squash Curry with the world of Ciao.
This curry is not too hot as the coconut milk tempers down the heat, but it does have a nice kick to it. If you like a hot curry though just add in more...

Nutty Soup~Spicy Butternut Squash Soup
Advantages: Delicious, spicy and healthy.
Disadvantages: Quite fiddly to prepare and turns your hands a strange shade of orange.
...~Spicy Butternut Squash Soup~
This is a really easy recipe for soup, it is very healthy and is zero points if you are on weight watchers. It tastes delicious and is a lovely burnt orange colour and quite thick in texture. I love the taste it is sweet and spicy.
Butternut squash is a very nutritious food source that is rich in complex carbohydrates and low in saturated fat and sodium. It is a very good source of vitamins A and C and a good source of beta-carotene, magnesium, manganese, calcium and potassium.
The only downside to this soup is the butternut squash turns your hands bright orange when you are peeling and chopping it, it is also quite fiddly scooping out all the seeds and middle bit and the squash is hard to cut up. It is well worth the effort though it is delicious and as I said earlier no points if you are...

Fruity squashes
Advantages: Taste great, low in calorie, no artificial colour
Disadvantages: It contains sulphites, sucralose and preservatives
...We tried several squashes and finally we became addict to Sainsbury's double strength squashes. We buy three of them most often: apple, apple & black currant and orange & mango squash.
Price and where to buy
These squashes are available in Sainsbury's. :) Almost all the times it is on offer. Last time two bottles (1,5 l) were for 2.5 pounds, now one bottle is for 1 pound. The normal price of one bottle is 1.46 pounds.
Advantages
- These squashes don't contain added sugar. It is sweetened with sucralose and no other artificial sweetener.
- They used only natural colours and flavours.
- It doesn't contain any benzoate preservatives.
- They are really strong, so you just have to put very little in your glass and tastes great.
- It has really fruity taste although it contains only 20% fruit. There are squashes where the taste...

A Squash And A Squeeze
Advantages: wonderful to read aloud
Disadvantages: none
...We received our copy of ?A Squash and a Squeeze? as a birthday present for one of my little ones and it has been read over and over again.
The story is written by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler. This pair are also responsible for several over wonderful books, such as ?The Gruffalo? and ?Room On The Broom?. ?A Squash and a Squeeze? was their first collaboration.
?A Squash And A Squeeze? is the story of a little old lady who is fed up of having so little space in her house. She calls upon a wise old man to help her and he comes up with a very curious plan, involving a group of rather naughty farmyard animals, which throws her house into complete chaos but ends up leaving the old lady much happier!
The story is told in rhyme, which makes it a delight both to read aloud and to listen to. My children love joining in as...

The Gays Vegetable of Choice - 2008
Advantages: Tasty, healthy, filling
Disadvantages: It has an identity crisis.
...It's official - the ninth of April is "Gays and Butternut Squash" day. I kid you not.
I'm currently in the middle of re-thinking my awful diet that is totally void of mostly anything good for you. In this re-think I have discovered a few nice items, so I'm now totally up for grabbing the oddest looking item when I'm at Tesco to try it out.
Gay and Butternut Squash day began like any other. Work, where I tell everyone to go do horrid things to themselves, then a joyous jaunt to the land of Tesco goodness. While there I spotted this odd looking and even weirder named object- The Butternut Squash.
Liking butter, nuts and squashing, I decided this was right for me. So into my basket it went, adding a whole 90p to my total. They will vary in price between 70p and £1.50 depending on the size and the place you shop. Tesco tends to...
