My Supermarket Mobile

Advantages: Cheap, easy to get started, good coverage, clubcard points

...So here we go again another review brought about by the fact I had to move to keep my job (long story and will be covered when I write the review of my employers when and if Ciao list them). Sadly for Orange their network doesn't cover Lydd camp - just the area outside it but no signal penerates the camp fence oddly enough. So while on my hunt for a working network I checked the O2 website and found they claim to have full coverage across the camp, not long after this I remembered the handset and SIM I was given by the nightclub I used to work for but was on Tesco mobile. Dont worry I've not lost it, Tesco mobile and O2 are pretty much the same thing because Tesco buy the 'spare' satellite time from O2 to operate their network. Which means that while the Tesco sell the SIM's and the handsets its O2 that owns and operates...

O2 has a network coverage of better than 99% - but note that this relates to 'population' coverage rather than geographic. What this means is that there are still plenty of remote (and some not so remote) areas across Britain that have little or no coverage. I have found the network quality to be sometimes disappointing. I feel that this is a reflection of O2's generally slipshod approach. For a more detailed commentary on O2's problems see the footnote below. Tesco have managed to accumulate something over 500,000 subscribers. How many of those were formerly with O2 would be interesting... ...? I have previously used the Orange and O2 network and although they had their good points I felt that customer service was poor. I was dubious about using T-Mobile, which was previously one2one when I first joined them. I believed that as Orange and O2 were bigger companies I would receive better service and coverage. Having used them and being disappointed I felt it was time for a change. When browsing on the Carphone Warehouse website I saw a fantastic offer for a Nokia 3310 which gave me a full 12 months line rental rebate, therefore it was an offer I couldn?t refuse. The network provider was T-Mobile and I thought what the hell, I?ve nothing to loose by giving them a try. I had to sign up for a 12 month contract on a certain price plan that I had to keep for 3 months, after three months I would receive a cheque for 12 months line...

Tesco mobile network - in fact O2 coverage

Advantages: O2 coverage (best in the UK), free credits, easy top up, unlatch possible
Disadvantages: high call charges (expected with PAYG phone)

However there are some restrictions - no international numbers, no premium rate numbers, no 08... numbers and you can't use it outside this country. The third good thing is the flexibility of top-up: online, in Tesco, by phone and ATM cash machines with the Tesco mobile top-up logo. Furthermore, you can set up you 5 favourite phone numbers (including landline) to have half-price call charges. The high call charges are expected for PAYG phones anyway. If you want low charges, the ASDA mobile network is very cheap however its Vodafone coverage may not be as good, at least in Oxfordshire. The fourth good thing is the coverage. When you register, you have complete access to your account, where you can see your latest activity - the last calls/texts/internet sites you visited on your phone, as well as change your details. I regularly use this service, and it has never caused me problems , in the terms of being inaccurate e.t.c . If you do have Pay As you Go from Virgin Mobile, I definately recommend you registering to this service, if you have not done so already.
