A Lidl price for a great Cabernet Sauvignon

Advantages: Well defined Cabernet Sauvignon flavours, very gluggable
Disadvantages: Only at Lidl folks !

...Lidl have really come up with the goods this time and if you like their Chilean Reserva Privada Cabernet Sauvignon on offer at £2.99 you'll come up smiling. To be fair I wonder if the producer of this excellently gluggable drop would be smiling at this bargain basement price tag especially considering it is meant to be a 'Private Reserve i.e. Reserva Privada'. The low price comes into even greater focus considering £1.58 of it is clawed back by HM Government in duty and VAT. Still having said the above I think its full price of £4.79 would still be very good considering the quality of this sub £5 star. The bottle has black labelling which gives it a rather mysterious look and makes it hard to locate and read in a dimly lit room ! In addition if you've got sufficient light levels to be able to read the back label and are into learning...

Chilean Cabernet Sauvignon - What A Man !

Advantages: Delicious blackberry taste & for half the usual price .!
Disadvantages: None, except Temptation.

...Luis Felipe Edwards , I love you ! To be more precise , I love your vineyard in the Colchagua Valley, in Chile. I know about your small family - run business because to-night I bought a bottle of your Cabernet Sauvignon to have with our Wednesday supper . I called in to our little Co-op in town & my eye was drawn to a very elegant dark green bottle with a white & gold label proclaiming what must be your pride & joy.; Luis Felipe Edwards " Reservado " Cabernet Sauvignon 2005 . The reverse label indeed confirmed that it would go with the simple meal I had prepared earlier ; beef & pasta or could be enjoyed on its own. At 14% , it promised to stand up to my cooking , although it can be stored for 2 / 3 years in your cellar if you want to wait. Suppertime came & the family was otherwise occupied...

Aussie Cabernet Sauvignon stunner

Advantages: Excellent value, deliciously quaffable, made by a good producer
Disadvantages: Need a Sainsburys to get it, watch that 14% alcohol !

...The Sainsburys own label 'Taste The Difference' range of wines overall achieve a good level of quality and the Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon member of this range is possible one of the best from my experience. This can be confirmed by it often being in residence on my wine rack ! I'm a great a fan of New World Cabernet Sauvignons because of their juicy and exuberant blackcurrant fruit nature and I found this wine was able to provide this experience in rather an elegant manner. It comes from the Coonawarra region in South Australia which is a 'cooler' wine producing area of this state and it is renowned for its distinctive red soils and producing classy, refined Cabernet Sauvignon. Hence Coonawarra Cabernets can be expensive so the full retail price of £6.99 is very good value for money given the quality of this wine and when it is...

Valdezaro Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve

Advantages: Well made Cabernet at a price below $15 retail
Disadvantages: Lots of great competition at a similar or better price

...Chile is the leading country in the world for producing excellent Cabernet Sauvignon at a reasonable price. The Valdezaro Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve is another fine example of the fine Cabernet Sauvignon being produced. As with many other Chilean Cabernets, the retail price of Valdezaro's Reserve Cabernet will vary greatly. It may be found for as little as $8 or more than $15 per bottle. Consumers should take notice to compare price to other Chilean Cabernets. Valdezaro's Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon opens with a bouquet of light chocolate and cherries. It is medimu to full bodied with generous Cabernet fruit. I believe they have probably blended it with some Merlot to provide smooth texture and early drinkability. The middle fruit leads to a smooth finish with the taste being sustained for 15 to 20 seconds. This is very good...

Be a devil!

Advantages: see review
Disadvantages: see review

...I am usually a white wine drinker but do, on occasions, like a glass (or 3) of red. One of my favourites is Casillero del Diablo cabernet sauvignon. Casillero del Diablo cabernet sauvignon is produced in the Maipo valley in Chile. After fermentation in steel tanks 70% of the wine is then transferred to be aged in American oak for a further 6-8 months. The remaining 30% is aged in stainless steel tanks. This gives the wine its oak flavours. The name Casillero del Diablo means cellar of the devil. The name came about in the 19th century when the vineyard owner Don Melchor discovered that his vineyard workers were sampling his precious wines. Don Melchor started a rumour that his dark cellar where the wine was stored was the cellar of the devil. It is not documented whether or not his ploy worked, but the name stuck. However back...

Cheap Chilean causes a Lidl upset

Advantages: It's well cheap
Disadvantages: A bit thin and rustic, not obviously a Cab Sauv

...Folks, a word of advice... if you got to go for a really cheap bottle of wine then generally go for a Chilean. In my experience cheap Chileans have enough drinkability and pleasant fruit without being too sickly sweet and cloying or sharp and acidic on the palate. You won't get a stunning wine but usually you'll get one that you can happily quaff on its own or with food without activating your gag reflex. Bearing this in mind I strolled into my local Lidl, purveyor of the cheapest wines to us Brits and happily snapped up the Cimarosa Cabernet Sauvignon, vintage 2007, from Chile's Central Valley at a bargain hunters price of £2.79. From the 24th of March it comes down to an unbelievable £2.29 a bottle which indicates it must be a loss leader as Duty and VAT these days on a bottle is getting close to two quid a bottle. It's like being...

Devilishly good value red

Advantages: Typically vibrant Cabernet Sauvignon Flavours
Disadvantages: A little bit of hot alcohol on palate

...Sometimes you want less than a full of bottle of wine when you're on your own. When I was recently quaffing solo I indulged in a tasty everyday red from Chile namely Casillero del Diablo (The Devil's Cellars) Cabernet Sauvignon that came in a handy half bottle from Tesco. This was one of the few half bottles available so as usual not a lot of choice for us half bottle quaffers. Nevertheless the limited selection yielded fruit and we're not just talking about this wine's deliciously exuberant flavour ! Chile has had a long history of producing decent Cabernet Sauvignon at affordable prices. This half cost £2.99 (I got mine on offer for £2.24) and I have no regrets with parting with almost three shiny coins for this baby. The bottle itself displayed a tasteful label with the devil's face emblazoned near the top the bottle. The label...

Glass of wine, anyone?

Advantages: Delicious full bodied wine, nice colour
Disadvantages: none

...Last night was Friday. Tradition has it that I would normally settle down in front of the television, or ciao, or a crossword with a nice bottle of wine. The last few weeks I have not done this as I have been on a diet but last night I experienced a setback. A nice setback! And so it was that at 9pm I was bored, and fed up with diet coke so I trundled off up to the off licence and came back with a bottle of Hardy's Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon under my arm. The bottle is a standard sized bottle and cost me £5.99. Now I do like Hardys Stamp of Australia wines, and this one is no exception. At 13.5% by volume it is a relatively mid-range wine in terms of alcohol content. Having bought the wine I was disappointed to have to rummage in my drawers for half an hour to find a corkscrew, but I guess these things cant be helped. I...

Review of Hardy's Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon

Smooth, sweet and short

Advantages: Reasonable at half price, often on offer at Tesco
Disadvantages: Only a moderate expression of Cabernet Sauvignon

...I admit to being obsessed with the usually delightful combination of Chile and Cabernet Sauvignon as it more often than not gives me a luscious hit of alcoholic Ribena. The Cab Sauv grape is famous for deliciously aromatic blackcurrant aromas and is able to replicate this among a spectrum of various producer countries. This style of wine can often be found at a reasonable price so while in Tesco I snapped up a bottle of Isla Negra (Black Island) Cabernet Sauvignon on offer at £3.49 (normal price is an unlikely £6.99 !). This wine is made by Vina Cono Sur who in my opinion produce very drinkable wines with the Cono Sur Pinot Noir a real standout. The grapes are sourced from the Central Valley of Chile which is sandwiched between coastal hills and the Andes. This is a large region so the grapes could come from many different sub...
