Zupperia Cafe/Restaurant - A Hidden Gem in a Beautiful City

Advantages: Superb central locations. Varied international menu. Modest prices. Wonderful Thai soups!
Disadvantages: The newly opened cafe is fresh and stylish though the original cafe could do with a decor update.

...I spend a lot of time in Bergen and there is a cafe/restaurant right in the heart of the city whose name is frequently pencilled into my diary whenever I am planning to meet up with my Norwegian friends. Zupperia was opened in September 2000 and has become established as a very popular spot for locals and visitors alike. (I believe that it is known "offically" as a "soup-restaurant" but I have described it as a cafe/restaurant in this review as I think this will give a clearer idea of the range of fare on offer here!) The location is superbly convenient for anyone sight-seeing in Bergen. It can be found on a corner where Nordahl Bruns gate crosses Olav Kyrres gate. Cafe Nero

Advantages: Authentic Coffee, Clean, tidy premises, 1st class ambience and atmosphere
Disadvantages: Food range is not so great value.

The plan went awry when we go to Beluga and found that the roof terrace was closed, presumably because of the high winds. The Departure Lounge Cafe

Advantages: Lovely rural location, easy to get to, great food and pleasant staff.
Disadvantages: Does not take credit or debit cards and no Stella!

...is covered by plastic sheeting . The toilets are shared by the car booters, the garden centre as well as customers for the café. I can?t speak for the ?Gents? but in the ?Ladies? there are two toilets and the disabled is shared next door with a baby changing unit. Both toilets are in dire need of a lick of paint, good clean and better ventilation. There was no soap, just a flake of what used to be some sort of cleaning material for your hands. They are better than nothing I suppose, but compared to the restaurant next door, they are a huge let down. A Butcher's turned Eaterie

...and there seemed to be a few free tables inside, so we ventured in. Two of the tables turned out to be reserved, but we settled for a table for two by the side wall. All the tables in the main area are circular marble ones, some bigger than others. The chairs are old-fashioned, basic wooden ones with curved backs. I said that Lou Lou's has an apparent French feel to it, but this is in fact because it used to be a butcher's and the original décor has been kept. Ceramic tiles cover one wall, and the wooden floor has seen better days. A curved metal rail hanging from the ceiling would once have been used for displaying carcasses. Now it has rather charming ornaments and flowers dangling down. The place has character and is quite unlike other cafe-restaurants in the area. A waitress immediately brought us another menu. ...Very rarely will I go out for a meal. In fact, it had been years since I'd even stepped foot in a restaurant. When I found out we were going out for a family meal, I was actually quite excited. I'd not heard of the Royal Hotel before, even though I walk past it at least once a week, so there's no surprise that I didn't know they had a restaurant there either; the Café Royal! Though, when I arrived outside the main entrance, it did look quite impressive. To get inside, you have to walk down a few steps. This isn't too practical if you're in a wheelchair or have a baby buggy, and I didn't notice any side-ramps either, although the website does state there is Disabled Access.
