Zupperia Cafe/Restaurant - A Hidden Gem in a Beautiful City

Advantages: Superb central locations. Varied international menu. Modest prices. Wonderful Thai soups!
Disadvantages: The newly opened cafe is fresh and stylish though the original cafe could do with a decor update.

...I spend a lot of time in Bergen and there is a cafe/restaurant right in the heart of the city whose name is frequently pencilled into my diary whenever I am planning to meet up with my Norwegian friends. Zupperia was opened in September 2000 and has become established as a very popular spot for locals and visitors alike. (I believe that it is known "offically" as a "soup-restaurant" but I have described it as a cafe/restaurant in this review as I think this will give a clearer idea of the range of fare on offer here!) The location is superbly convenient for anyone sight-seeing in Bergen. It can be found on a corner where Nordahl Bruns gate crosses Olav Kyrres gate. Cafe Nero

Advantages: Authentic Coffee, Clean, tidy premises, 1st class ambience and atmosphere
Disadvantages: Food range is not so great value.

Advantages: fun, charming and diverting city with plenty of interesting things to see and do; great variety of bars and restaurants
Disadvantages: has some shonky areas, may bring you to spend more than you'd like

  Harvester Restaurants

Advantages: Always one close by, quick turn out, children are welcome and catered for.
Disadvantages: Toilets can be quite disturbing, not all dishes taste as good they are described.

Athens - Haven't You Grown Since I Saw You Last?

Advantages: Vibrant, cheap excellent public transport. Famous historic sites. Eating out
Disadvantages: Not as 'Greek' as it used to be. Poor air quality. The drivers!

....e. 1896? This is a slim horseshoe shape of a building, designed mainly for the 100 yards dash and throwing things from the blunt to the sharp. Nonetheless, it seems to fit better in its central location, and 100-odd years of Athenian traffic pollution have toned it in nicely. If it's a view over the city you want, forget the Acropolis, it's not that high, but Mount Lycabettus is. Fortunately, there's a 'funny-cular' railway to the top, although the 30 minute wait is not so funny. I always like my cable cars, and in particular my cables to look reassuringly new, and this one doesn't disappoint, although one slight let down is that it's in tunnel all the way up. At the top, there's a small church, a restaurant with 'views over the city' prices and a café. The view from here is much more dramatic, and even looks down on The Acropolis...

Pfifferlingen Fungus Frenzy

Advantages: Lovely staff, great food, outstanding bread, great value

...going to go and have drinks on the roof terrace of the Beluga building which sits on an island in the Wese river and then off to find some tiny restaurant in the historic Schnoor district. The plan went awry when we go to Beluga and found that the roof terrace was closed, presumably because of the high winds. I guess risk-averse German companies don't want customers being blown off their roof. It's probably bad for business. So the plan adapted quickly and the next thing I knew we were in Boettcherstrasse, a cute and arty little alleyway that I know to be Sabine's favourite street in the city. Disadvantages: Basic (but plentiful) breakfast

...and around the immediate vicinity -in fact we were stuck for choice and ended up going to one for our main course and then another for dessert on some nights, just so we could try as many as possible! If you do go to Athens try eating in the Plaka area of the city-its great for sitting over a leisurely lunch - quite a few of the restaurants have easy chairs outside so you can eat, lounge and people watch away an hour or so in comfort....
