The best 80 Shillings you'll ever spend....
Advantages: Good and tasty. Smooth and not too strong.
Disadvantages: Distinct taste may not please everyone. Not available everywhere.
...We're back in Whitby now for another excellent beer that I tasted while we were there. This was a beer that had travelled all the way from Scotland, to entertain us before we went to collect the Chinese we had ordered for supper. I found it to be a real winner ~ the beer in question is Caledonian 80/-.
The Caledonian Brewery ~ or The Caley, as I was later told, was set up way back in 1869, by two gentlemen called George Lorimer and Robert Clark. It is based in Edinburgh and remains a testament to Scotland's brewing heritage. They still use the same processes and, wherever possible, the same equipment, using the natural ingredients. They even still use the Victorian Brewhouse and large coppers that are fuelled using massive open fires ~ this gives rise to their Advertising slogan "Beers brewed with real fire". Some of the Caledonian...

A Wee Swally of Caley 80 bob
Advantages: A quality beer from a quality brewer
Disadvantages: Not as good as it used to be
...My local pub has a decent if not extensive range of ales on draught and this is supplemented by two guest ales which are changed on a weekly basis. One of the mainstays however is an eighty shilling ale from the Caledonian Brewery, called not surprisingly - CALEDONIAN 80/-.
Caledonian is the sole survivor from Edinburgh's heyday when there around 30 independent breweries in the city. The brewhouse still uses direct-fired open coppers, one of which dates back to 1869 when the firm was founded as Lorimer & Clark. This method of boiling the kettles creates hot spots and leads to a caramelization that intensifies the malty flavours.
They produce a wide range of cask and bottled beers, including: 60/-, 70/-, 80/-, DeucharsIPA, Murray's Heavy, Double Amber, Edinburgh Strong Ale, Merman and a couple of organic ales as well as seasonal...

TATTOO
Advantages: Rich, complex and warming
Disadvantages: Maybe not as strong as it should/could be
...What's this? A dissertation on the merits, or otherwise, of permanent body art.
No.
It's about a beer that is brewed to commemorate the Edinburgh Military Tattoo. If you don't know what that is, you can read all about it at the official website: http://www.edinburgh-tattoo.co.uk
So who brews this beer?
Who else but Edinburgh's largest, and most successful independent brewer, CALEDONIAN.
CALEDONIAN is the sole survivor from Edinburgh's height as a brewing centre when there were around 30 independent breweries in the city. The brewery still uses direct-fired open coppers, one of which dates back to 1869 when the firm was founded as Lorimer & Clark. This method of boiling the kettles creates hot spots and leads to a caramelization that intensifies the malty flavours - Scottish beers almost always accentuate towards...

JOOKERS - The Best Beer in Britain
Advantages: The best beer in Britain
Disadvantages: None
...At an airshow, a pilot from Leuchars
astonished the the many onlookers
when he landed his Harrier
jumped over the barrier
and murdered a cool pint o' Deuchars
DATELINE: AUG 6, 2002 - Deuchars IPA, brewed by Caledonian of Edinburgh, was judged as the best beer in Britain by a panel of brewers, beer writers and journalists. This is the first time that a Scottish beer has ever won the title of Champion Beer of Britain.
Roger Protz, one of the finalist judges and Editor of the Good Beer Guide said, "I think that the victory for Caledonian is well overdue. Deuchars IPA is a fabulous beer. A brilliant blend of malt and hop character and above all a drink with enormous drinkability. A great victory for Scotland!"
CALEDONIAN brewery is the sole survivor from the time when...

Going Bananas!
Advantages: Excellent well balanced beer with a hint of bananas.
Disadvantages: There are bananas - so if you really don't like them you're scuppered!
...While in Scotland recently we had a day trip to Dumfries. After calling at their Wetherspoons for lunch we had a while to kill before the next bus back to Kirkcudbright. A quick shufty at this year?s Good Beer Guide set us on course for a nearby pub and the chance of an interesting selection of beers. We ended up in the Cavens Arms on Buccleuch Street and I ended up with a pint of beer produced in Scotland ? result! The beer I ended up savouring was Top Banana brewed by the Caledonian Brewery.
~~~THE BREWERY.
The Caledonian Brewery (known locally as the Caley) is based in the Slateford area of Edinburgh, Scotland. Brewing began in 1869, when the brewery was opened up by George Lorimer Jnr and Robert Clark, and was then called the Lorimer and Clark Caledonian Brewery. At this time Edinburgh was a town well known for its breweries...
Room with a View in the Highlands of Scotland
Advantages: Fantastic views from room, very relaxing
Disadvantages: Dinning in the hotel was chaotic
...My husband and I spent 2 night at the Caledonian Hotel in Ullapool last week.
Ullapool is a small town in the North West of Scotland, about an hours drive north of Inverness. As one of the main ports for ferrys over to the island this is reason most people come to the area.
The Caledonian Hotel is one of the oldest and largest hotels in the town, with around 85 rooms. Being 8months pregnant I was a bit disappointed when we checked in and found out our room was up 2 flights of stairs, but on opening the bedroom door the climb was well worth it. We had one of the "turret rooms" which was large, spacious, and for the giant bay windows had fantastics views right out over the harbour and the surrounding hills.
Our room had everything we needed - comfy double bed, en suite toilet, bath and shower (with plenty of hot water!) kettle...
Bitter To The Very End!
Advantages: Refreshing, Lots Of Different Flavours
Disadvantages: Not Widely Available Everywhere
...Readers of my recent review on Old Speckled Hen Premium Ale will be aware that I have recently acquired a taste for certain Real Ales, and therefore I am eagerly sampling the Guest Beers on sale at my local Pub.
Amongst others my local is currently selling a Pint of Deuchars IPA for £2.44 a time and last weekend I decided to give it a try.
I have actually seen this Beer on sale in a few of the Pubs in Sheffield but I am unsure if it is becoming more readily available or if I am just suddenly taking more notice of the Real Ales available.
THE BACKGROUND
Deuchars IPA (India Pale Ale) is produced by an Edinburgh based Brewery called the Caledonian Brewing Company who have been brewing Beers since 1869. In fact of over 40 different Brewers that operated within Edinburgh during the 1800's the Caledonian is the only one that still...
Meet the Duke of Beers!
Advantages: Tasty, refreshing and good for a long session!
Disadvantages: Let down by a couple of average pints.
...The Caledonian Brewery, known locally as The Caley, began in 1869 in Edinburgh. They were purchased by Vaux in 1919 and were eventually saved from closure in 1985, by a management buy-out. The Caley still has three open coppers in its Victorian Brewhouse (which gives their beer a rather distinct and unique flavour) and produces a variety of cask beers which it supplies to free trade outlets ~ they don?t own any pubs of their own.
Their beers are produced using water from what is known as Edinburgh's Charmed Circle of Brewery Wells ~ the water and other ingredients are all found locally and techniques are virtually unchanged from the 19th Century.
Caledonian Brewery produce a range of seasonal and regular ales, including Flying Scotsman (4.6%ABV), 80/- (4.1%ABV) and Golden Promise (4.4%ABV). They are recognized and respected...
Amber Amber
Advantages: Easy drinking, unfussy
Disadvantages: Not very complex
...I'm a great fan of Caledonian beers.
Actually, I'm a great fan of beer in general - "Yeah?" I hear you say, - "who'd've thunk it?"
But The Caley is a special brewery I think. Tradition, skill and craft, history and a bit of style all go to make this arguably one of the best breweries in Britain. But then I'm biased.
Caledonian brewery is possibly the last remnant of the brewing industry in Edinburgh, a survivor of the time when the city gained its nickname of Auld Reekie - if you've ever passed a brewery when hops are a-boiling and malts are a-roasting, you'll know why this nick-name was so apt.
Caledonian's Victorian brewhouse still uses direct-fired open coppers, one of which dates back to 1869. It's thought that these are the only ones in Britain still fired by direct heat (most kettles are heated by steam).
This method...
