Canon APS-C Upgrade 'Kit' Lens

Advantages: Compact. Light. Good range. Decent image quality.
Disadvantages: Not highest build quality. Slow max aperture. Better option available.

Review of Canon EF-S 17-85mm F4-5.6 IS USM

All purpose objective for Canon DSLR

Advantages: very fast AF mechanism, quiet operation, image stabilization
Disadvantages: feels a bit plastic, low-light performance not so good

...lense, which also has an ultra sonic motor (USM), but an aperture of F4 throughout the whole spectrum, as well as being a bit smaller and better built (I think it is one of the standard lenses recommended for the 5D). I would recommend this lense for the entry-level photographer, although it can be almost as expensive as a Canon 400D body. In the future, I will probably get a lighter fixed...
