Why 75-300mm?
Review of Canon EF zoom lens - 70 mm - 300 mm F/4.0-5.6 by malekowie

Advantages: Great focusing length
Disadvantages: Price

...Why to chose Canon EF 75-300mm IS lens? Because is long, heavy and expensive. But seriously, the lens is suitable to use exclusively with Canon EOS range of cameras, SLR as well as DSLR (Digital SLR). It works with all new digital SLR including 20D and 30D, so if you use a compact Canon camera the lens is not for you! Canon tends to sell the SLR (or DSLR) cameras as a set including a lens. Usually the lenses included in the package aren't best quality, don't get me wrong, there isn't anything wrong with them but they are just basic lenses deprived of newest gizmos like IS, USB and so on… Currently Canon produces seven different lines of lenses to suite any job and pocket: • Fixed Focal Lenses; • Zoom Lenses; • Macro Lenses; • Diffractive Optical Lenses; • Image Stabilisation Lenses; • Tilt-and-shift Lenses... Fast and under £200....
Review of Canon Telephoto zoom lens by stave84

Advantages: Fast autofocus, Excellent quality for a low-ish end lens.
Disadvantages: Not that sharp at 300mm

...This is going to be a bit of a mixed review. I love this lens, dont get me wrong, but i had taken a long time to read up on these lenses because i knew i wanted a 75-300mm and couldnt decided between this and the Sigma version of the same spec (75-300mm f4-5.6). I saw a few reviews for Sigma lenses sayin that the sharpness just wasn't there at the long end (250-300mm). I fimally settled on spending a few extra quid and having the canon USM Lens. The build quality of this lens is excellent, and for a long-ish lens, its compact, and autofocusing is VERY fast (with my EOS 30 anyway). Optically, the lens is excellent from 75mm right up through 250mm, particularly for it's price. However at above 250mm the sharpness drops off... FAST. There's no problems at f32-f8... but f5.6 at 300mm is a no-no if what you want is razor sharp images. Ok so... Read review

A good value lens
Review of Canon 75-300mm f4-5.6 AF by Brewster

Advantages: Quiet, fast focusing, good quality pictures
Disadvantages: Feels a bit light weight

...The Canon 75-300 USM III lens is a well priced lens aimed at the enthusiast photographer, the professional is catered for with the ‘L’ range. This lens was one of the reasons that I chose a Canon autofocus camera as I had read some very favourable reviews of the lens. In use the lens focuses quickly, smoothly, quietly and accurately in all but the lowest light situations (without using flash) - where it hunts around and will lock on to the subject about half the time. The only time I have had to resort to manual focus, via the very easy to use – if a bit small – focusing ring at the front of the lens (after flicking the tiny MF/AF switch), was for a flying display when the aircraft were in the distance. Once the lens was focused and the aircraft in the centre of the view finder, and after I found the tiny AF... Read review

The Ultimate Starter SLR
Review of Canon EOS 50E by Vistaway

Advantages: Tons of features, easy operation, top quality build.
Disadvantages: Older model.

...- giving me underexposed subjects. The built-in flash is good for a touch of fill or indoor work, but can result in overexposed shots every now and then. A durable, attractive body finishes the aray of features, but is a bit heavier than the newer models. The standard 28-80mm lense is decent, and the Ultrasonic focusing is impressive, but I soon got the craving to upgrade. The camera has worked well for me using both a Canon 75-300mm and fixed 50mm lense. Experienced photopgraphers will already know how good this body is, but those new to the field should ignore the 'flash' of the new models and look for this fantastic, but often overlooked camera.... A Careful Choice
Review of Canon 75-300mm Image Stabiliser by 1670127

Advantages: Allows slower speed photographs to be taken in certain circumstances in low light
Disadvantages: Weight and limitations on use

...I am a keen amateur photographer with a special interest in wildlife photography. I purchased the Cannon 70-300mm Image Stabiliser as the most active time for this wildlife photography is either early morning or late evening when the light tends to be less than ideal. The lens itself is very heavy in comparison to similar 'non-image stabiliser' style lenses and this needs to be taken into account when considering the total weight of camera equipment that you will be carrying around, especially if you are carrying it around rough terrain. As a standard lens with the image stabiliser turned off the lens functions as well, the optical quality is similar if not better than the standard 70-300mm lens and the results are pleasing. The lens focus's quickly and accurately which is obviously essential in wildlife photography and as with my... Read review

Canon EF-S 18-55mm Zoom Lens
Review of Canon EF-S zoom lens - 18 mm - 55 mm F/3.5-5.6 by ferocity

Advantages: Cheap and light
Disadvantages: Grainy photo quality, low zoom

...I recently purchased a sweet Canon 400D/XTi Rebel from Amazon.co.uk (£45 cashback!) and this standard zoom lens (Canon EF-S 18-55mm) came with it. As far as I know, you cannot purchase the Canon EF-S 18-5mm on it's own, as it's designed specifically to be sold with the 400D/XTi Rebel package. I'm sure you can pick up a cheap one on eBay though (probably removed from a kit package, or being sold due to an upgrade from kit package). I've seen the EF-S 18-55mm sell for around £25-£35 at undamaged/rarely used condition on eBay, which is quite cheap! I obviously chose the kit lens package with my 400D/XTi Rebel as it only adds about £40 in the price difference, and I couldn't afford a new lens at that time. Before I start reviewing the actual lens, I'd like to say that is is a kit lens. It doesn't have a great built quality, and doesn... Read review

Best photographic money ever spent
Review of Canon 70-200mm f2.8 AF by mikefrench

Advantages: Pin sharp, rugged build, comaptibility with extender
Disadvantages: Expensive and heavier than the standard 75-300

...I picked up a second hand (although mint example) of this Canon 70-200mm f2.8 'L' series lens 3 weeks ago at my favourite camera store. Although I had just upgraded my camera body I knew that to get much better pictures I needed to spend money on the lens and not the camera - and I was still using the standard 75-300mm f4.5-5.6 USM which gave me soft pictures and vignetting on wide angles. This lens is completely different to the standard Canon lenses. If you have not seen or used an 'L' series lens close up then you'll be surprised when you do - I was. The big white lenses you see the pro's use at sporting events are all 'L' series. OK lets talk specifically. This lens covers the 70-200mm mid range zoom. It can be used for portrait, wildlife, sports, close up and even some landscape work. It is compatible with the Canon 2x extender... Read review

Canon EF-S f17-85mm 4-5.6 IS USM
Review of Canon EF-S zoom lens - 17 mm - 85 mm F/4.0-5.6 by justoz

Advantages: Excellent image sharpness, fast to focus, image stabilizer.
Disadvantages: Slight vignetting at times.

...I bought the 17-85mm EF-S IS lens because the standard kit lens, 18-55 mm left a gap of 15mm between it and the 70-300mm lens I already owned. I researched heaps of lenses thoroughly and decided the extra cost of the Canon should give me a better quality lens. It did! It is definitely heavier and more solidly constructed than the 18-55mm. It focuses accurately, is very fast, and has the advantage of an image stabilizer which allows you to hand hold the camera at slower shutter speeds (up to 3 steps). This allows you to retain sharper images in low light without them being affected by camera shake. Although the 17-85mm has a tripod sensor, the image stabilizer should be turned off if using on bulb setting. The lens can focus as close as 0.35m/1.2ft for macro photography and this is best achieved by setting to MF (manual focus... Read review

Canon 300D
Review of Canon EOS 300D by PaulineLees

Advantages: Easy to handle, aquaint yourself with and easy to use. Lenses compatible with higher models.
Disadvantages: I can't fault it!

...This camera is an excellent DSLR for any beginner or amatuer. I bought this when Photography was just a hobby, now on a degree course I still find it exceptional. A little more camera to hold on to compared with the 2 newer models, which I personally prefer. As previously stated it is compatible with all canon EF lenses, so if you wish to update in the future you can carry your lenses with you! I personally love my camera and despite being updated twice since my purchase it has held its value wonderfully. Canon offer an endless supply of accessories for their cameras, most reasonably priced for plenty of experimentation and fun. I cannot fault my experience so far with canon. I do not claim to be a prefessional so please read some of the other reviews. I just offer my personal opinion. Canon was leading in this type of camera when I... Read review

Compact 'standard' lens - a step up from 18-55mm
Review of Canon Zoom lens by happydadtoo

Advantages: compact; lightweight; sharp
Disadvantages: small zoom range; designed for 35mm film; no image stabilisation

...This lens is widely available from many sources, both new and secondhand. It is compact and light in weight and offers a significantly wider zoom range than the 28-55mm lens supplied as 'standard' on many Canon digital SLR cameras. Used on most Canon digital cameras, the effective focal lengths become 1.6x bigger (as the sensor is APS- sized, not 35mm sized), making it a 45 - 170mm zoom. Hardly wide-angle, but, at the lower end, it is roughly the same as the 50mm lens that all 35mm cameras used to be fitted with as standard. With digital cameras, the argument goes, you can 'stitch' several shots together to create a panorama and so overcome the lack of a wider angle lens. That's only true to a limited extent - but TRUE wide-angle lenses need a second mortgage at present! With focal lengths between 80 to 120mm being regarded as ideal... Read review
