Living with a 5D after a 20D

Advantages: Full frame sensor, very high resolution, excellent operation
Disadvantages: Costs double the price of a 30D, hidden extra costs

Nov 2007 - Long Term Update ------------------------------------------ Having owned this camera for over a year now I can confirm that it's still a great bit of kit! I upgraded the EF 28-135 IS to a EF 24-105 f4L IS and bought a EF 70-200 f4L IS - both very worthwhile investments and the 5D really delivers great results with these lenses. The newer IS lenses, especially the 70-200 use a lot of power and this combined with the already higher power use of the 5D has meant that I've had the battery run out a couple of times during a day. I'll investigate these new high capacity batteries that have started to appear but after the last episode with a non-Canon battery, I'm a bit wary. Alternatively I might have to go with the battery grip but this adds size and weight to what is already a quite big...

Review of Canon EOS 5D

canon 5d---- good or bad

Advantages: full frame
Disadvantages: new cameras have better features

...i have a canon 5d and has 12.8 mp full frame cmos sensor,9 points af, digic 2 processor, records raw/jpegs, compact magnesium alloy body etc. If you don't know the difference between full frame and cropped frame is that the full frame standard size is 35mm the cropped frame can range from sizes but smaller than 35mm. Obviously there new cameras that have new feature but if you want the cheapest camera that has good pro quality and also light and discreet this is the 1. I will say that it lacks in a few thing that the new cameras have like live view, auto sensor cleaning, hd video recorder, digic 4 processor, AF micro adjustment, quick control screen, built in flash, water dust resistance well better sealing....

The Canon EOS 450D

Advantages: high quality images, great design, rugged yet light, good value, quick
Disadvantages: auto modes can be dodgy in extreme lighting, only one control wheel, bad live view

...like a physical exposure-lock buttton and an eye sensor on the screen to save battery life all contribute to the one element of this that I can fault the least, and is worth buying just for its design and usability. The camera is also very reasonably priced in its field, and while it seems expensive at first, most stores of £50 cashback, and the kit bundles are cheap, considering the quality of the lenses. The EOS 450D is also very good looking as cameras go, trouncing Nikon, and adding to its appeal. Battery life is also excellent (a whole day of non-stop snapping proves no problem) and transfer is quick and easy. The Canon EOS 450D is the ultimate all-round entry DSLR, but is also so good that is is considered by many as semi-professional, and is certainly the leader of its field. Canon EOS 450D - Superb!

Advantages: Extremely easy to use, fantastic picture quality, long battery life.

Canon Quality

Advantages: Same Canon quality we have come to expect, great ISO capabilities.
Disadvantages: Buttons can get fiddly in the cold.

At just 3.4fps up to 170 Jpegs, is not great when compared to similar models and is not sufficient for getting the right moment at fast moving sports. 5fps would have been more acceptable at this price band. The ISO is where this camera shines; it goes right up to 3200 expandable to 12800. As it uses Canons renowned sensor system images are more than usable even when you shoot at the thick end. The LCD screen used on this camera is 3.0? and also includes live view, which can only be expected. This screen is more than large enough on this relatively small body. The AF system is very fast with the kit lens and works quietly. The amazing DIGIC 4 processor also features in the 500D. This is welcomed with its stunning noise reducing qualities and extraordinary startup...

Advantages: Superb image quality, well built, High resolution, low noise, Excellent spec.
Disadvantages: Only minor gripes, no CF card included, large and heavy compared to some.

A slightly less explosive Canon.

Advantages: Typically good Canon images.
Disadvantages: Poor flash and feels a bit flimsy.

...Canon along with Nikon have for years been known as the kings of camera`s but with things changing rapidly in the DSLR market Canon had to think fast. All of Canons recent releases have been at the expensive end of the market and they have been rapidly losing ground to the likes of Nikon and the new kids on the block (Sony). The release of the Canon EOS 1000D in June this year (2008)was an attempt to get back in the entry level market and whilst I think it should have the desired effect I am still not convinced they have done enough to tempt people away from the less expensive Sony option. Many people myself included thought that the new Canon would just be a fresher version of the Canon EOS 400D and the only stand out feature available on this 1000D that the 400 did not offer was a live view, so were Canon trying to pull the wool...

...Review EOS 400d The canon 400D is a good camera - for the price it's a great camera. It's relatively compact; lightweight; comes with an adequate lens; has programmed settings for novices - like portrait and landscape modes; but also offers manual control of apertures, shutter speeds, white balance, ISO? so that the more experienced photographers can have fun and be a little more creative. One item to note if you are upgrading from a digital compact is that you have to use the viewfinder. The screen on the back of the camera only shows exposure information, and allows you to view photographs you have already taken. It does not let you view the scene you are about to photograph. In my opinion this is a good thing because it forces you to hold the camera properly - up against your face where it can be held steadily, instead of at arms...

Canon EOS 400D - Great Value for money Digital SLR

Advantages: Good price, easy to use
Disadvantages: Has been superceded

...Having had a Canon EOS 350D, when the 400D was launched I was so confident of the brand that it was a forgone conclusion that I would buy one. The build quality is the first positive point. It is such a solid camera, not that you would bash it on purpose, but it'll certainly take a few knocks without any problems. The 18-55mm kit lens that I got with mine is also pretty good. This does feel a little cheaply made in comparison to the camera, but it does the job and has good optics. The screen on the back of the unit gives you all the information needed. Once a picture is taken it also gives you a preview. There is no live view, like point-and-shoot compacts and the latest digital SLR's. This means that framing your photos is done through the VERY clear optical viewfinder. The results are just stunning. The EOS 400D will beat any compact...
