Canon or a Brother ?

...This review is for the Canon Pixma IP4700. Setup --------- This printer comes inside a box which is heavily packaged and first off all you get the power cable. The cable is wrapped with this tie back but the problem is that when you unwind the cable you notice how it wants to try and curl back up again so you do need to try and straighten it out as soon as you can. You receive the disc which has the drivers on which you need to install on the computer otherwise you have no way of printing items off without it. There is nothing else inside the box besides the cartridges which are easy to insert and use. The disc is good because it is so simple to install the items onto the computer and this takes about a minute to do. You do not get a connection to the computer though so you do need to purchase one yourself and many websites...

The Canon PIXMA IP1800 and the end of the world

Advantages: Cheap and replaceable. Attractive and efficient technology.
Disadvantages: Ink costs more than the machine. Potential ecological mayhem.

...My new Canon PIXMA IP1800 replaces my Canon PIXMA IP1600 so the planet may be doomed and It could be my fault. My Canon PIXMA IP1600 had nothing wrong with it. It wasn't broken. The pictures spilled out on glossy paper at A4 ready for framing. The text was crisp and black. I'd had it for a year or so. It was cheap yet efficient and as good as any printer I'd ever owned. It had no tray to catch paper coming out but otherwise was printing perfectly and I've been delighted with it. This is partly why I bought the Canon PIXMA IP1800 which is also excellent. But why bother? They're almost the same machine! The ink is running out on my old printer and, bizarrely, new cartridges would cost more than a brand new one. My wife was furious. She looked at the packets of ink cartridges with a shop assistant because she didn't believe me...

Canon Pixma MP600

Advantages: High quality printing, quiet and looks good
Disadvantages: Expensive ink, as always

...ugly in an industrial way but that was a popular style a few years back. It produced pretty good document and photo prints and the scanner was adequate for documents but not of a standard to copy photos. When coming to choose a new printer these were the characteristics I was interested in. It had to print to a high standard, the scanner needed to be better and I didn't want it to look like an ugly lump of corporate kit with attachments falling off all the time. Despite painfully setting up the fax functionality first time round I have never received or sent a fax using the HP, in fact I don't think I've faxed anything this century so that functionality was dispensable. At a snifter under £100 the Canon Pixma MP600 packs a lot of quality into an attractively designed package. Ignoring any pointless fax functionality it concentrates...

...were ready for replacing, this is a fairly important factor for me as I tend to replace at least one ink cartridge per week. I decided my new printer was to be a Canon and set about surfing the internet for a decent deal. My new printer, like my old one, would be printing black only 99% of the time but occasionally I like to print a photo out and so it needed to be good in this area also. I must admit I get most of my photo printing done by the professionals now, as there is so much competition and this has brought the prices of printing right down, but sometimes you just want to print one off there and then and so it is nice to have the option available. I found the Canon Pixma IP4600 on a site I have used before a couple of times and one I find to be very good. They are called OYYY.co.uk and they tend to be very competitive on price...

Advantages: Quiet, fast, square, a paper tray plus a feeder and excellent prints.
