Canon EF-S 18-55mm Zoom Lens

Advantages: Cheap and light
Disadvantages: Grainy photo quality, low zoom

...I recently purchased a sweet Canon 400D/XTi Rebel from Amazon.co.uk (£45 cashback!) and this standard zoom lens (Canon EF-S 18-55mm) came with it. As far as I know, you cannot purchase the Canon EF-S 18-5mm on it's own, as it's designed specifically to be sold with the 400D/XTi Rebel package. I'm sure you can pick up a cheap one on eBay though (probably removed from a kit package, or being sold due to an upgrade from kit package). I've seen the EF-S 18-55mm sell for around £25-£35 at undamaged/rarely used condition on eBay, which is quite cheap! I obviously chose the kit lens package with my 400D/XTi Rebel as it only adds about £40 in the price difference, and I couldn't afford a new lens at that time. Before I start reviewing the actual lens, I'd like to say that is is a kit lens. It doesn't have a great built quality...

Nearly one 'L' of a lens

Advantages: Useful range. Fast f/2.8 aperture. Great IS. Superb image quality.

Being an EF-S lens (the 'S' standing for 'Short' back-focus), it is designed for use ONLY with cameras having APS-C size sensors. Do not attempt to use one on a full-frame DSLR or 35mm SLR camera. ...Must make this clear that it is the older version of 18-55mm before they upgraded it to fit the 450D and above. So 400D and below. When starting out in photography; most people get entry level camera body like 400D Canon EOS, this lens comes with the body to form the basic kit lens. As far as I know, you cannot purchase this lens officially with its boxes and such, you can buy one off Ebay for a reduced price of £50 or so without its boxes. Before purchasing the entire kit, you will have to realise that the lens will have to be replaced very soon as it does not perform as well as its counterparts such as Canon 24-105mm for example. Kitsch Kit Lens

Advantages: Keeps the dust off the sensor!
Disadvantages: Poor quality. Poor build quality, Poor performance.

It is quite obviously the result of cost-cutting exercises at Canon in an effort to keep a headline grabbing low prices for the camera/lens combinations as advertised in the photographic press and at point of sale. Canon APS-C Upgrade 'Kit' Lens

Canon EF-S f17-85mm 4-5.6 IS USM

Advantages: Excellent image sharpness, fast to focus, image stabilizer.
Disadvantages: Slight vignetting at times.

...I bought the 17-85mm EF-S IS lens because the standard kit lens, 18-55 mm left a gap of 15mm between it and the 70-300mm lens I already owned. I researched heaps of lenses thoroughly and decided the extra cost of the Canon should give me a better quality lens. It did! It is definitely heavier and more solidly constructed than the 18-55mm. It focuses accurately, is very fast, and has the advantage of an image stabilizer which allows you to hand hold the camera at slower shutter speeds (up to 3 steps). This allows you to retain sharper images in low light without them being affected by camera shake. Although the 17-85mm has a tripod sensor, the image stabilizer should be turned off if using on bulb setting. The Canon i250 printer

The quality is of quite a high standard for a cheap printer, added to the fact, the cartidges are cheap too, and easy to insert, and it uses a USB for connecting, meaning it is almost no work to set up, you have every reason to give it a try. I have had this printer a couple of months, and I am very pleased with it. It even looks nice. With a 600 x 600 dpi for B&W and 4800 x 1200 dpi for colour, it is very capable of photo quality, giving sharp, clear pictures.
