It's relatively compact; lightweight; comes with an adequate lens; has programmed settings for novices - like portrait and landscape modes; but also offers manual control of apertures, shutter speeds, white balance, ISO? so that the more experienced photographers can have fun and be a little more creative. One item to note if you are upgrading from a digital compact is that you have to use the viewfinder. The screen on the back of the camera only shows exposure information, and allows you to view photographs you have already taken. It does not let you view the scene you are about to photograph. ...Having had a Canon EOS 350D, when the 400D was launched I was so confident of the brand that it was a forgone conclusion that I would buy one. The build quality is the first positive point. It is such a solid camera, not that you would bash it on purpose, but it'll certainly take a few knocks without any problems. The 18-55mm kit lens that I got with mine is also pretty good. This does feel a little cheaply made in comparison to the camera, but it does the job and has good optics. The screen on the back of the unit gives you all the information needed. Once a picture is taken it also gives you a preview. There is no live view, like point-and-shoot compacts and the latest digital SLR's. Advantages: A very simple sophisticated camera to use
Disadvantages: None at all takes good quality photos everytime

...I have owned one of these cameras for about months now after having a Canon 350D, so I upgraded to this camera and was not at all disappointed in any shape or form. It is a nice lightweight camera that is not at all heavy and one can easily fit it into your hand and not have to worry about using a tripod unless you want to fit a large lense on to the camera which was heavy then you would need to use a tripod to stop the hand shake. The Menu was very simple to use and it came with a good book to read about all of the features on this camera. Would I buy anything other than Canon you ask? no I would not as Canon speaks for itself and the photos I have took speak for themselves too......... Canon EOS400D a fantastic entry level DSLR

Advantages: 10.2 mega pixels, good price, loads of settings, user friendly manual, auto setting

...I had been looking to upgrade from my trusty compact camera for some time, and after reading numerous reviews on entry level SLRS, I opted for the canon EOS400D and what a good choice it was. It has everything that you could want for you first SLR, and unless you are a top end professional photographer, this camera will pretty much suit anyone. I find it easy to use, and comes with a user friendly guide. There are several pre set modes and an auto mode as well as the programme and manual mode for when you get more experience and want to enjoy the flexiblilty of altering shutter speeds and aperture size. It can produce up to 10.2 mega pixels which is more than adequate, and for an entry level SLR, this is a lot higher than others I considered. The Canon EOS400D has become a bit of a clasic, and I am having so much fun with this...
