Review of Canon MV 700

Everything you need and nothing you don't!

Advantages: Simple, cheap
Disadvantages: battery life, no firewire lead included.

...When I was looking for a camcorder I looked at the whole Canon MV7xxx range from the MV750i right down to this one. All through the range they use the same sensors to record the image (so same image quality) but the higher models have lots of features that I just don't need. For example, I don't need the camcorder to take photo's and store them on an SD card, especially as they are at around 1Mega pixel anyway. Absolutely pointless, especially when I have a decent digital camera anyway! DV in and out, could be useful for some, however I brought a device last year (VideOH by Adaptec) that allows me to connect my VCR to my PC to record VHS digitally if necessary. The MV700 has low light setting, the MV750i goes one better and a super night mode. Another unneccessary feature as low light is adequate. Slowing the shutter down any further...

The excellent Canon MV20

Advantages: Small, light and feature packed
Disadvantages: Could do with a connection for an exterior mic.

Boasting a 48x digital zoom and Progressive scan CCD along with Red/Green/Blue primary colour filter this camera outperforms many cameras costing half as much again. ...After a long trawl looking for a Mini DV Camcorder I eventually settled on the Canon MV X330i it had all the features I was looking for. I found it relatively easy to use after studying the manual, (have camera ready to use when reading its easier to follow) although navigating the menu can be a bit fiddly,this is displayed on the screen and when not in use through the viewfinder, some features can only be accessed with the screen open ie setting and using the fader (6) different effects, (which I use regularly) The viewfinder I think would be greatly improved with the addition of a soft eyecup (to reduce light pollution) instead of the hard eyepiece it comes with, so i found it easier to use the screen The 2.5" screen is a joy to use with crystal clear resolution in daylight or night, the camera produces excelent...

The Beginners Camcorder

...The MV700 was my first ever cam corder, and quite honestly, it is just amazing for a beginners camera for its price. Before i get onto its advantages, there is one important point that has to be made. This camera does not have a memory card reader, it is not a digital cam corder. It requires DV tapes, and if you are looking to edit the videos on a computer you require a firewire card. This was the one piece of information that i could not find anywhere, and which bamboozled me about what should be my first ever cam corder. But at the same time, for the price this camera costs, it is by far one of the best in its price catagory.
