Reduced in a sale, the Canon Selphy CP600 cost me £60, and it was definitely £60 well spent. On my daughters birthday I got to take over and try the thing out, and it was very good. The Canon is designed to print photos up to 4 by 8 inches, and the speed of print was brilliant, about 70 seconds for a 4 by 6 inch borderless photo. In addition to offering good speed, it prints good looking output and comes with a rechargeable battery for full portability. So of course I had to steal it and take it to work (as I do with all my children's gadgets) to have a good little play so I charge up the battery (it takes roughly 2hr 30mins to charge from flat) and I took along... After much debate, my boss went out on a whim - without our IT honcho - and bought the CP4005dn - which, as it had toners instead of cartridge - he rationalised that it couldn't possibly go through the ink as fast and, according to him, was pretty darned fast and was obviously highly sought after as it had sold out in the shop, but they would deliver one to him. This was a bad idea since my boss knew as much about printers as I do about his collection of Johnny Hallyday CDs (in other words, you know what its function is, but other than that not very much). Still, misgivings aside, we awaited its arrival with baited breath. On Monday, a lovely delivery guy buzzed saying 'parcel', which my colleague duly signed for, only for the delivery guy to disappear on us saying it was outside… oh my. What a sight! I looked at the various offerings from HP, Epson and Lexmark as well, and decided upon the Canon i850 as the perfect choice. Advantages: fast start-up, fast auto-focussing
Disadvantages: not full 35mm frame

...in all modes); exposure compensation; automatic exposure bracketing which takes three exposures at upto +/- 2 stops; in manual mode you can take "bulb" shots where the shutter is open for as long as yold the button down. Basic image playback seems pretty much unchanged except for the nifty joystick for scrolling which is a real gain over the old method, and a new jump facility. but now you can run the images as a slideshow I haven't investigated whether this works when you connect the camera to a television but I guess it does. Printing direct from the camera can be PictBridge, or for appropriate Canon printers additionally Bubble Jet Direct or CP Direct. ...What a great printer! I bought one 12 months ago for my Canon Ixus digital camera (although this printer works with any "PictBridge" compatible camera) and haven't looked back. I'm sure if I added up the price of the printer and the paper/ink packs then it would take a very long time before I started saving money not using photo labs, but it's good fun to use and handy being able to print photos whenever you want (e.g. if a relative comes round and wants a copy). The printer is a real no-brainer to use with a PictBridge-compatible camera - just plug the camera into it and press the "print" button (it can also be plugged into a PC and used like a conventional printer). ...Canon is renowned for cameras and printers and the CP-200 brings together both fields of expertise. Within the box you receive the printer, a sample cartridge (5 prints), and 72 more as 2 packs of 36; a power supply, and the 6x4" paper holder. There is also a CD containing software to use on the PC - I've never needed to do this, as well as thick manual, but there are 9 languages in it.
