Canon S200

...I came across the Canon S200 a little over two years ago in the PC World sale when, as a student, I was looking for a cheap but reliable bit of kit to keep those coursework essays churning out (I'd rather have had an extra half hour in bed than race to college to 'bag' a printer in the IT lab...hm, not much has changed I fear). Not only did I quite fancy the price-tag (just under 30 quid), I was attracted to the S200's size - it's small enough to perch on the corner of my desk without taking up too much precious space otherwise needed for books, papers, cups of tea, elbows etc... S200 - Basic Budget Printer that gets the job done

Advantages: Very cheap to buy and run, compact.
Disadvantages: Print quality not brilliant, a little flimsy.

...I purchased a Canon S200x printer as a stop-gap measure when my absolutely dreadful Epson 680 gave up for good (a definite blessing in disguise!). I have since upgraded to the brilliant Canon i560 (which I have also reviewed) but used the S200 for a few months whilst I saved up for a better one. The printer cost me less than £40 from the superb ebuyer.com - this is especially excellent when you consider that cartridges (unofficial) for the printer can be purchased for about £3 each! Sometimes budget printers like these sting you later on the cartridges but with this unit, the cost is low and stays low! Unpacking the printer, you'll notice it is fairly compact and light, and also feels rather tacky and plasticky. The printer is mostly standard beige, with the front cover in a green/grey effect. Nikon Coolpix S200

Advantages: Functions well in daylight; looks good and is fairly compact
Disadvantages: Picture quality is middle-of-the-road; is awful in low light

...The Nikon Coolpix is a good-looking camera; that is not to be doubted. I was initially very pleased with it, but have since been a little underwhelmed. Although I think Nikon are a very good company who on the whole turn out some excellent products, I am unconvinced that the S200 is one of their best pieces of work. My main gripes are twofold. Firstly, I do not think that the picture quality is anything better than average, and there are certainly better options out on the market elsewhere - I believe Olympus cameras to be very strong in this regard. Review of Nikon Coolpix S200

Canon Powershot - Above Average

Advantages: Nice for a small camera, Good settings, Nice overall camera
Disadvantages: Noise @ Low light, Batterys recognised as empty

..., the powershot is very easy to use, its nice to hold and your hand is positioned well for all types of use, the screen is clear and a non digital viewfinder makes it very nice to use although this is not as accurate as you would expect, it has a button on the front which seems a bit out of place but im pretty sure its supposed to evaluate white balance, This camera hasn't been advertised as a very durable camera or a waterproof one, but a few light splashes of rain didn't do it any harm and it has held together after a few bumps, it does show paint scratches though, its case is a hard plastic and is quite seamless, Canon have done a good job at designing this camera, it boasts as a camera that is compact enough for a pocket and also has the usability of a bridge camera, the small bump on the left gives you great grip and gives space for two AA...

Review of Canon PowerShot A590 IS

A slightly less explosive Canon.

Advantages: Typically good Canon images.
Disadvantages: Poor flash and feels a bit flimsy.

...Canon along with Nikon have for years been known as the kings of camera`s but with things changing rapidly in the DSLR market Canon had to think fast. All of Canons recent releases have been at the expensive end of the market and they have been rapidly losing ground to the likes of Nikon and the new kids on the block (Sony). The release of the Canon EOS 1000D in June this year (2008)was an attempt to get back in the entry level market and whilst I think it should have the desired effect I am still not convinced they have done enough to tempt people away from the less expensive Sony option. Many people myself included thought that the new Canon would just be a fresher version of the Canon EOS 400D and the only stand out feature available on this 1000D that the 400 did not offer was a live view, so were Canon trying to pull the wool...
