Canterbury,Kent
Advantages: Lovely cathedral,nice Medieval architecture
Disadvantages: Pricey, crowded with visitors in the summer
...Canterbury,home of the mother Church of England,is a city I know very well since my father was born at Ashford, which is only 14 miles away.It is a surprisingly small city, but during the summer months is full of tourists.
There is quite a lot to see and do in this city. Pride of place has to go to the Cathedral, which is quite a beautiful building. The Canterbury Tales exhibition is worth a visit and some of the medieval structures in the city are very attractive. The modern architecture is,in my view, often not very inspired.
Shopping wise Canterbury is good. Besides housing several large department stores, there are a wide range of specialist shops, including a number of good book shops. The student population is quite large here since there is the University of Kent, Christ Church College and the well known public school,Kings' School...

Canterbury Cathedral
Advantages: Historical benefits, good attraction for all the family to learn about
Disadvantages: Mnay steps to climb.Apart form that none
...completely destroyed in one attack.
The Cathedral had a crew of volunteers who watched every night during raids (these were called ?Firewatchers?), patrolling the roofs to deal with any incendiary bombs dropped and likely to cause extensive damage.
Finally just some dates of history which may be of interest;
In 1170 the infamous murder of Thomas Beckett
Thomas Beckett?s shrine destroyed by Henry VIII
In 1660- 1704 restoration was being completed after Civil War
1834, the North West Tower was rebuilt
And in 1954, the Library was rebuilt after the Second World War bombing.
Getting to the Cathedral
As this is central to Kent access through public transport and motorways is very good.
The main route by motorway is to continue down the A2 into Canterbury, following the Pilgrims route on the original Roman road into Kent which...

Need a Restaurant Recommendation? Just ASK!!
Advantages: VERY reasonable
Disadvantages: none worth mentioning
...: £24.70, which is pretty good for two (albeit soft) drinks, two large and lovely pizzas, a salad, and a dessert.
I would definitely go to this branch of ASK again, and would try other branches too. The food wasn't anything out of the ordinary, but it was tasty, and thats good enough for me. The service was quick and pretty good (apart from the incomprehensible specials sonnet). I didn’t go to the loo while I was there so I can’t comment on those. Disabled access is pretty good, as everything appeared to be ground floor level. I’m not sure about family-friendliness either, as it was quite late there were no children there.

TYLER COURT
Advantages: Probably the nicest place to stay on campus
Disadvantages: It's a tad expensive!
...When I applied to go to Kent University it was at the last minute (about 2 weeks before my results!) and so did not get to apply for accommodation in the normal way. I was assigned my accommodation by the University and was given the option to live in Tyler Court or to find my own place to stay!
So I decided to take up my place in Tyler Court Block C, which is (if I do say so myself) probably the best place to live on campus.
APPLYING
From what I have heard from the people who actually applied properly, to apply for accommodation you either fill in a form which they send you in the post (I'd recommend doing this ASAP especially if you hope to get in here!) or you can fill in an on-line application form which will be detailed in the letter accompanying your postal application. All the details of the rooms and rates can be found...

Castle Museum in Kent
Advantages: Eclectic Museum set in pleasant grounds
Disadvantages: Not as good as nearby Hever Castle.
... Visitor Information
Chiddingstone Castle is 5 miles from Edenbridge in Kent, between the two more famous historic attractions of the area, Hever Castle and Penshurst Place.
Travelling by car, without a sat nav, we found it best to follow the signs to nearby Hever Castle on the major roads. As we got nearer, on the B2027, we followed the Chiddingstone signs.
If you have a sat nav, you will need the postcode TN8 7AD.
They are open Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, from Easter until the last Sunday of September. Information about additional open days can be found in the What?s On Section of their website, which includes Halloween and Christmas events.
Prices are £6 adults, £4 children aged 5-13, under 5s are free. There are also family and season tickets.

Geoffrey Chaucer's Canterbury Tales
Advantages: First rate entertainment
Disadvantages: Not a single one!
...I do not think that we laughed so much in ages! The animated Canterbury Tales is a masterful and extremely well done re-telling of Geoffrey Chaucer's Canterbury Tales.
The animation is better than first rate. The animations were undertaken by some of the top animators in Europe, made in Wales and Russia the production values were exceedingly good. It was almost possible to forget that they were animations, sometimes, the work was so exquisite.
The Canterbury Tales were written by Geoffrey Chaucer who was a scholar, a gentleman, a diplomat and also something of a 14th century secret agent. The Canterbury Tales was not entirely finished, but must be one of the most enduring pieces of fiction ever written in England.
The characters of the pilgrims who were taking part in the pilgrimage form London to Thomas a Becket's shrine in...

Uni Great, College Let down
Advantages: Nursery facilities
Disadvantages: Disorganisation, poor structure, poor communication, unhelpful
...would be able to stay behind to wait for my husband as he really needed to get on the course and she said no. As a result I phoned South Kent College and explained the situation. They sent out an application form and invited my husband for an interview. He started college the following monday!
The only good thing about the college is the nursery that is on campus. I have a two year old son and he loves it there. They are very organised and brilliant with the children. They are helpful when you have any problems and extremely understanding with financial issues.
I hope that any students looking forward to going to Canterbury dont get too excited as it really is quite a let down....

Eastbridge Hospital, Canterbury
Advantages: A little bit of calm (and it's free!)
Disadvantages: It's tiny
...Could one visit Canterbury and not feel the inexorable tug of the majestic Cathedral? The grandeur and beauty of the building and precincts are well documented and its history formidable.
In 1170 four knights, believing themselves to be acting on the instruction of Henry II, murdered Archbistop Thomas Becket in the Cathedral. Until the destruction of his shrine in 1538 by Thomas Cromwell, the cathedral became a place of pilgrimage for the old and the sick. Millions passed through in the hope of redemption in the presence of the shrine of the saint devoted to the poor and the needy.
However, ice-cream vendors, jugglers, whining children, French coach tour groups and Japanese snappers can easily dominate a visit today. The hustle, the bustle, the queues and the elbows can all make for a demanding and sticky summer morning outing...

Had the best time ever!
Advantages: Nice and quiet place for study, spacious campus with lots of facilities including a large library in the centre of campus
Disadvantages: Far from other cities and towns which could be annoying for those who enjoy going as nightlife in canterbury is not that great!
...I have just graduated from an Economics degree at the university and have ordered my robes and photographs for the graduation ceremony due to take place in the well known canterbury cathedral in July. Definately I would say that the past three years of university has been the best time of my life so far...and what a special place to have to celebrate the end of my uni life and have my graduation ceremony take place at the canterbury cathedral. It will certainly be an emotional day for myself and my family and also a day to celebrate the end of our degrees with my friends and other students in my course. Although I can see myself visiting the town and the university again in the future, I will definately miss being a student there.
Eventhough this university wasnt my first choice, I think that I was lucky to have chosen this university...

THE CANTERBURY TALES VISITOR ATTRACTION
Advantages: Wonderful experience, excellently presented, combination of sounds, smells and sights
Disadvantages: Can be busy in summer
...each other stories on the way.
Located in St Margaret’s Street, in the centre of Canterbury, if you visit the Canterbury Tales attraction, you can join a selection of the pilgrims on their journey. This is suitable for all ages, and if you enjoy places such as the Jorvik Viking centre, then you will love this – it is a similar type of experience. It’s open all year round, and costs £5.90 for an adult to visit, and £4.90 for a child or student. Personally I think this is great value – and if you are a family of 4, you can get a ticket for just £18.50. However, look in the local papers too – the Kent Messenger for example – as often you will find some discount vouchers.
If you visit in the winter months, you won’t have any problems with queuing, and indeed, could find yourself alone in...
