Geoffrey Chaucer's Canterbury Tales
Advantages: First rate entertainment
Disadvantages: Not a single one!
...I do not think that we laughed so much in ages! The animated Canterbury Tales is a masterful and extremely well done re-telling of Geoffrey Chaucer's Canterbury Tales.
The animation is better than first rate. The animations were undertaken by some of the top animators in Europe, made in Wales and Russia the production values were exceedingly good. It was almost possible to forget that they were animations, sometimes, the work was so exquisite.
The Canterbury Tales were written by Geoffrey Chaucer who was a scholar, a gentleman, a diplomat and also something of a 14th century secret agent. The Canterbury Tales was not entirely finished, but must be one of the most enduring pieces of fiction ever written in England.
The characters of the pilgrims who were taking part in the pilgrimage form London to Thomas a Becket's shrine in...

Travellers' Tales
Advantages: A true classic of the English language
Disadvantages: In Middle English without translation, it can be difficult to read
...In Chaucer's work, 'The Canterbury Tales', perhaps the greatest of English literary works from the period of the language known as Middle English, there is one particular piece that have always stood out for me.
'A Clerk ther was of Oxenford also,'
This is perhaps my favourite character, as when I first read it, it seemed to epitomise what I hoped for in my own life.
'That unto logik hadde longe y-go.
....
For him was lever have at his beddes heed
Twenty bokes, clad in blak or reed,
Of Aristotle and his philosophye,
Than robes riche, of fithele, or gay sautrye,
But al be that he was a philosophre,
Yet hadde he but litel gold in cofre,
But al that he mighte of his freendes hente,
On bokes and on lerninge he it spente,
and bisily gan for the soules preye
Of hem that yaf him wherwith to scoleye.

THE CANTERBURY TALES VISITOR ATTRACTION
Advantages: Wonderful experience, excellently presented, combination of sounds, smells and sights
Disadvantages: Can be busy in summer
...*****
Firstly, I’ll just make clear from the outset, that this op is on only one attraction in Canterbury, the Canterbury Tales Visitor Attraction. I have given Ciao a few product suggestions of late, but was advised to write about the attraction under the category of the nearest town, since they only wanted the major cities (Edinburgh, London etc) to have subcategories of attractions and museums. I’ve just explained this so you don’t rate me as UH straight off for writing about only one aspect of this fabulous historical city – believe me, if I could write about everything that Canterbury had to offer, I would! I decided however that since this is one of my favourite places to visit whenever I return down south, it really was worthy of a mention in its own right.
*****
I am pretty sure that most people...

You Canter Bury These Tales
Advantages: You can understand the language, Excellent modern adaptation of the essence of these stories
Disadvantages: Only six episodes.
...I call myself an uneducated poet, since I write poetry more instinctively without having had the benefit of any formal education in poetry. As such, I am ashamed to say that I've never read Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. (UPDATE: This is no longer the case - see more update, below.) But being an avid fan of BBC dramas, when I saw the previews of this six-part mini-series, I knew I had to move hell or high water to see it! After doing so, I was both shocked and appalled that no one had reviewed it or even asked for it to be put up as a category here on Ciao, so I took the initiative and here you are - my review of the BBC's 2003 version of Canterbury Tales.
The original work by Geoffrey Chaucer is a collection of poems evolving around about 24 different stories. It's a complex and expansive collection, originally written in old...

The Reviewer's Tale (Act 2)
Advantages: Well signposted, Available in 7 languages
Disadvantages: Expensive, Short visit length
...The poet Geoffrey Chaucer is widely acknowledged as one of the foremost figures in English literature. His best known work, "The Canterbury Tales" was published in 1476 (probably the first book ever to be printed in England) making it a best seller for over 600 years. Chaucer wove his tales around the central premise that each was told by a pilgrim travelling from the Tabard Inn in Southwark, London (where the story begins) to the shrine of Saint Thomas in Canterbury Cathedral, one of the most popular sites of pilgrimage in Medieval Europe. Pilgrims did actually gather at this inn to make the perilous journey in groups, before proceeding at a leisurely pace along what is today roughly the route of the A2 (incidentally, this became known as the "Canterbury Pace", which moved in modern English as the word "canter").
This famous...

Canterbury Cathedral
Advantages: Historical benefits, good attraction for all the family to learn about
Disadvantages: Mnay steps to climb.Apart form that none
...traverses the length almost of the whole of England
The Canterbury West and East train station are in walking distance of the Cathedral and local buss? run also from the stations to the Cathedral.
A local taxi trip from these stations will cost you in the region of £5-6 depending on taxi companies, so I suggest if the weather is good then walk the route and admire the City shopping available.
There is a good Park and Ride scheme in place also to park and hop on a bus into the City.
The local South Eastern train company produces a great offer which includes train travel as well as the entrance to the Cathedral, The Canterbury Tales visitor attraction?s Augustine?s Abbey and one of Canterbury?s Museums. The cost of this ticket is an Adult is £15:75 and a child is £12:65

A Journey into Literature
Advantages: English literature at its finest
Disadvantages: None
...Chaucer has a special place in my memory for very personal reasons. ?Canterbury Tales? changed me, it altered how I thought about myself and let me grow in confidence. That?s pretty high praise so though this is a book opinion, I?ll add into it the manner in which the book affected me.
When I was a schoolboy, we were required to read to the English class a story of our choice, and this aural presentation played a large part in the grades we were given. To me this was as frightening an experience as could be, especially given that I had, and still have, a speech impediment. I stammer. I stutter. I stumble horrifically over some words. When speaking to people this is bad enough, but at least then I can choose my words to mask the problem, when reading from a page the words are chosen for me and I can?t avoid those that for me are...

Eastbridge Hospital, Canterbury
Advantages: A little bit of calm (and it's free!)
Disadvantages: It's tiny
...Could one visit Canterbury and not feel the inexorable tug of the majestic Cathedral? The grandeur and beauty of the building and precincts are well documented and its history formidable.
In 1170 four knights, believing themselves to be acting on the instruction of Henry II, murdered Archbistop Thomas Becket in the Cathedral. Until the destruction of his shrine in 1538 by Thomas Cromwell, the cathedral became a place of pilgrimage for the old and the sick. Millions passed through in the hope of redemption in the presence of the shrine of the saint devoted to the poor and the needy.
However, ice-cream vendors, jugglers, whining children, French coach tour groups and Japanese snappers can easily dominate a visit today. The hustle, the bustle, the queues and the elbows can all make for a demanding and sticky summer morning outing...

A Journey Through History
Advantages: Interesting attraction, unique, cheap entrance
Disadvantages: Audio packs can leave you with arm ache!
...I only live a fifteen minute drive from Canterbury but I have only visited the Canterbury Tales once and that was about five years ago.
About The Canterbury Tales
For those of you that have never heard of The Canterbury Tales, they are a collection of stories that were written in the 14th century by Geoffrey Chaucer. Inside this attraction, the collection of tales are told by the pilgrims who are on a pilgrimage from London to Canterbury to visit the shrine of Saint Thomas Beckett which is in Canterbury Cathedral.
Chaucer wrote the tales in Middle English with two of them in prose and the rest in verse and in The Canterbury Tales attraction they are still spoken in this way.
Location
The Canterbury Tales is located in the middle of the City of Canterbury and about a five minute walk from Canterbury Cathedral. The train station...
