...~~ Disclaimer ~~ This review is based on my personal experience of Capital One which may or may not be representative of the company as a whole - you decide. ~~ Background ~~ I applied for, and obtained, a Capital One Classic credit card in January 2003 which surprised me as :- - my credit history was chequered to say the least - I had been turned down by a few other companies - I had moved house 4 times in the previous 3 years So the message seems quite clear - Capital One will give a credit card to virtually anybody - I'm living proof of that. ~~ The Company ~~ This is an American owned company so it's hardly surprising that the CEO has a name like "Rich Fairbank" - my theory is that he was christened "Poor Fairbank" and made his name change after discovering gullible people looking for credit :) Capital One...

CAPITAL ONE CREDIT CARD

Advantages: They will give you a credit card if no one else will!
Disadvantages: Bad Customer service/Very high APR

...The Capital One Credit Card is the only company that I could find who would give me one! A few of us in our younger days did a little bit of damage to out credit, Capital one has offered me a £200 credit limit, I have to pay £1.66 each month just to have the card and the APR is 29.7%! So unless you are sure you can be responsible with a credit card, i would leave it well alone orr you could get in to a terrible circle with it. I have had the card 3 months, The service I have recieved has not be very good, whether this is because they know I cant get a credit card anywhere else? I had to wait for 1 month to get my card delievered, The first one did not turn up, as well as not getting a first statement. As I did not get a statement I did not know when I had to pay my bill. ...My experience with Capital One has been really good till now. I did not have a credit card and no credit score/rating in UK to assist me to fetch one. CAPITAL ONE PREMIER

Advantages: improves your credit rating

...apparently therein lies the problem, if you have never had any credit then the credit card companies will not entertain you it is as bad as having a poor credit rating. That is until I discovered Capital One, this company specialises in supplying credit cards to those of us who have never had credit or for people with poor credit history's. I applied and was duly accepted for their card, although it comes at a price. The yearly fee is £18 and the Apr is much higher than normal credit card companies, but I suppose this is how they offset their losses when they take on dodgy customers who don't pay their bills. The other downfall about this card is that the credit limit offer starts of quite low, apparently they range from £200 to £1000. Not The One For Everyone

Advantages: It's a MasterCard, Quick Turnaround

...Recently, my husband and I have had need for a credit card, not because we tend to spend on it, but because we hadn't had one for a long time, a couple of years maybe. Having not had a credit card for a while, we took a friends recommendation on a credit card, seeing as balance transfers and 0% rates weren't going to be applicable to us, we decided to apply to Capital One as they were offering 0% on balances & 0% on purchases both running until November 2008, so, as you can see, we went with completely the opposite to what we needed. Loyalty is worthless with Capital One

...I have had a Capital One card for over 4 years and have always paid on time, kept within all the limits....what I consider to be a good customer. I chose Capital One because I couldn't get a credit card elsewhere and thought I would build my credit rating through it, which I did. Today I decided to give their customer services a ring and see if I could change to a lower rate of interest from the extortionate 30%. I have a credit limit of £1500 which has increased from the measley £200 I had to start with so I thought they must value my custome. Their customer services had the attitude 'if you don't wan to pay the rate you can always cut the card up'. I said that I would do that and there was no argument or referral to another staff member....nothing. So, once you have a Capital One card, you can like it or lump it! I'm off to get...

Confusion over Capital One's cards

Advantages: Decent interest rate, no annual fee
Disadvantages: none really

...The main reason I am doing this posting is the incorrect information on some postings regarding Capital One and their various credit cards. Firstly the PREMIER card does NOT have a high APR which has been stated. The APR on this card is 12%apr. With a balance transfer rate of6.9%. They have a sub-prime card known as the Classic card, you can pick various designs with this card. There is the original Green card,ones with cats and dogs on etc. With the Premier card there is no annual fee, with the classic range of cards there is an £18 annual fee. The higher your credit limit on the Classic cards reduces your APR,they may start you off with a small credit limit of £200 and this would be extremely high. Being a sub-prime card holder with Capital One doesn't mean you have a terrible credit file, infact having NO credit...

Capital One Credit Card

Advantages: Interst free credit so long as bills are paid on time, Reliable, Provide credit to nearly anyone
Disadvantages: High interest rate, £18 start up fee

...For those of us who have a poor credit rating for whatever reason, Capital One offers a Premium Card with a low credit limit. The annual fee of £18 in my opinion is a bit steep but they offer interest free credit so long as you pay your monthly bill on time. Failure to pay your bill results in a high interest rate being applied to your account. My credit limit was £400 when I joined last year and so far I have had no problems with them whatsoever. At intervals throughout the year they offer special prices on various goods and holidays. At Christmas I managed to get a Nokia 3210 on BT Cellnet pay as you go for £49.99 when in the shops they were selling at £70. All in all I would recommend Capital One for people who would have no problem settling their monthly bill....

Advantages: good if you have bad credit history as you will be accepeted

...I would not normally endorse a credit card that charges a 29.9% APR, but I will on this occassion, as this really is a card with advantages and is user friendly. My credit rating is awful due to blowing a lot of money on a lot of rubbish, this has led to problems and a bad credit rating. When this happens banks and card issuers treat you like a leper, snubbing you for past errors. Sometimes this is due to genuine reasons such as responsible lending, which they are obliged fo follow, but they could be more helpful. They are not though. This is where Capital One steps in. REBUILD YOUR CREDIT WITH CAPITAL ONE

Advantages: it's a credit card primarily for those people that can't get one elsewhere
Disadvantages: £18 annual fee and 29.9% interest rate

We have had several mailings come through the post from Capital One, for both of my sons who had rather shot themselves in the foot with injudicious use (to put it mildly) of their first credit cards. Fine so they were both 18, had a bit of money to spend, but they both looked upon the credit limits given to them by their Miidland Bank mastercard as a 'bonus'. They forgot that once they'd used it - they had to pay it back.
