Advantages: ~~a unique visit
Disadvantages: ~~ the crowd
...Carcassonne, classed as World Heritage, and national monument since 1997, is known world wide for it's Cathare "cité".
It's not easy to describe, but I'll do my best :
Imagine a small town, built in the IVth century. This town has it's cathedral, (built later, by the Cathares), and a castle.... the lot is surrounded by a doubled fortified wall. That's for the quick description, but let me tell you how it came to be, and how my visit went.

Narrow dog to Carcassonne by Terry Darlington
Advantages: A great story, very well told
Disadvantages: It ended!
...This is the tale of Jim, who is a whippet. And his two companions (the humans who mistakenly believe that they own him) Terry and Monica Darlington. And their "brave" decision, on retiring, to take a canal narrowboat the Phyllis May, all the way from Staffordshire to Carcassonne in Southern France.
Everyone told them that they were mad, or brave, or stupid or brave in a madly, stupid way. The upshot of this advice was that they were more intent on making the trip.
Jim has bad habits. The kind of bad habits that endear dogs to people who are not their owners. His habit of begging in pubs is told by Terry in a fashion that is both highly amusing and original in tone.
Terry's sense of humour that shines through the telling of this tale has brought a unique voice to the fore of British writing and it is to be hoped that Terry will...

Narrow Dog to Carcassonne - Terry Darlington
Advantages: Makes you want to do the trip yourself
Disadvantages: Puts you off ever doing the trip yourself
...My choice this month is a work of non fiction and it represents a complete change of tone; it is an hilarious account of a completely hairbrained attempt by a couple of pensioners to navigate a narrow boat from Stoke in Staffordshire through the canals of France to the Carcassonne region. It would have probably have been safer and less eventful if either the author or his wife had any idea of what they were doing, but it is all too apparent that they had not. Fortunately their whippet Jim, who can be viewed in a disgusting pose on Terry's web site, seems to have some sense of self preservation and, despite his penchant for rogering large lady Labradors, inveigles his way into the sympathies of characters crucial to their survival, who would otherwise have been justified in having Terry and his wife sectioned or whatever the equivalent...

COME FOR TEA IN MY CASTLE.
Advantages: Beautiful place.
Disadvantages: None at all.
...I visited Carcassonne this year and I think that it is an experience that is worth sharing with my friendly Ciao companions, because I notice that Ryanair do cheap flights to Carcassonne and thus that a visit there by people from England is very cheap and quite a viable proposition.
Carcassonne is a Medieval Town, housed in the walls of a castle. Imagine living there, it would be a super address to have in France.
I wish that I could add photographs to this op because I am not sure wordpower is sufficient to describe how beautiful the place is. As you approach Carcassonne, you suddenly see the turrets of the castle high on a hill in the distance, and it is breathtakingly beautiful, as well as entire, instead of being a relic from the past. It is a living town, a place where people are born and raised, not just a dead monument like...

Get the extensions and enjoy it even more
Advantages: Endless joy and even more fun with the extensions
Disadvantages: It is addictive
...could lead to incompletion. Beware not to occupy too many pastures as you run out of stones to build cities. If you start a city and have no stone left the next player, provided he/she draws a city-tile, can occupy it for him/herself.
End-scoring
-----------------
Only closed pastures can be counted.
- Each completed city around the pasture counts 3 points. The size of the pasture has no influence on the scoring. As discussed before if two (or more) players occupy one pasture, the player with the most stones on it scores (or both if equal number of stones).
- Each tile of a incomplete road scores 1 point.
- Each tile around an incomplete monastery scores 1 point
Expansions
---------------
The 1st Expansion "Carcassonne-Inns and Cathedrals" includes new bigger stones per colour(player), new tiles and more "old" tiles...

Best Western Le Donjon Les Ramparts certainly not Best Value
Advantages: None
Disadvantages: Split into different buildings, expensive.
...Travelling through France to northern Spain we decided to spend a night at the medieval city of Carcassonne in the Languedoc area.
First Impressions
From a distance the walled city looked stunning, but to be perfectly honest that was the best bit. For those of you that have visited and enjoyed your stay I will apologise now but we absolutely hated it, if I had wanted a theme park I would have gone to Disneyland! The city was full of the most horrendous ?tat? gift shops selling everything from fake suits of armour to tee-shirts with knights on them and really awful ?attractions? (I use this word loosely) such as the haunted manor and weapon museum.
It was a little better at night when the shops had closed and the restaurants opened, however, teenagers staying around the city became very bored, got very drunk and succeeded in...

Cathare country Airport
Advantages: It's in Carcassonne
Disadvantages: Not many flights
...Salvaza Airport, locally known as the airport of Carcassonne, "pays Cathare", is situated 4 kilometres west of Carcassonne, just by the Narbonne-Toulouse motorway. There is a commercial zone just next to it, with a supermarket, furniture shop, MacDonald's, and a few hotels. The first thing that is striking when you reach the airport, is its small size. 100 square metres altogether with the departures, and arrival areas.

A narrow dog on a narrow boat!
Advantages: Cracking good read!
Disadvantages: The book ended...i wanted more!
...Review of 'Narrow Dog to Carcasonne' by Terry Darlington.
I was loaned this book by one of my marina mooring neighbours. We live part of the year on a narrow boat and love the life, I enjoy boating and all that it entails and when at home occasionally watch 'Water World' on Discovery channel. This book 'Narrow Dog to Carcasonne' has been featured on the programme and serialised for television. In spite of enjoying the television look into the adventures of Terry Darlington, Monica and Jim's adventures, I'd never got round to reading the book, until Jean passed it on.
I am reviewing the paperback version of the book. It contains 329 pages, was published by Bantam Books, the ISBN is 0553816691 and the size of the book is 19.8 x 12.6 x 3 cm.
Narrow Dog to Carcassonne was published in 2005. It became a top ten best seller and has...

Back to the ice age...endless fun
Advantages: Great fun
Disadvantages: additctive
...This is not just for history fans but for everyone who loves strategy games mixed with a bit of luck.
The set-up is really easy and rules are easy to learn. basically start playing...or arther hunting or gathering.
As the name implies we are catapulted back to the near ice age (historieans please do not take offence if I got that wrong) and we strive towards hunting and gathering.
Like it's mother game "Carcassonne" it was nominated for "Spiel des Jahres" in Germany.
The set-up is similar, so it's another tile-game.
You are supplied with a number of diiferent tiles ranging from bonus tiles, forrest tiles, pasture tiles (with/without animals) to rivers and lake tiles.
Each player, in turns, draws a tile and places it on the tiles already on the table. The first players need to place the drawn tile next to the "starting tile...

hunt, gather, but there are tigers in the pasture
Advantages: great family fun
Disadvantages: none
...positions to score points. Most of the mechanics are familiar from the original Carcassonne, but some new things are added to spice things up.
So. That?s the gist of the game. We played it and this is what we thought.
Adam aged 12: Really enjoyed it but hated losing when we added up the numbers at the end. You score points as the game progresses as well as totalling up objects (rivers, grasslands) at the end. Adam would often be leading only to be overtaken by one or two of us. The more we played the less this happened as he picked up the strategy better.
Rebecca aged 9 (going on 19): Found this game the most enjoyable of several we?ve played together. For her, no one is shot of removed from the game (like in Risk for example), she enjoyed the fact we were playing with animals: deer, mammoths and aurochs roam the pastures along...
