Very very good
Advantages: No dongles to loose or break, quality, speed
Disadvantages: Takes up both PCMCIA slots
...on - its like there was a normal socket there. They only problem is that it will take up both slots to make space for the full sized socket.
The card its self is of a very high quality. It supports all sorts of special features like SNMP network management, BatterySave (tm) for increased battery life, and of course full 10/100mbps speeds (because this card uses the CardBus feature of the more recent laptops you really can get 100mbps, just make sure your laptop can support it). Another neat feature is the network status lights are integrated into the socket - when they are on it illuminated the actual plug so you know what is going on. Even just the feel of it in your hands suggest quality - its very solid and well put together unlike some PCMCIA cards I have seen.
I've found the card to be absolutely faultless and of great quality. I...

Reliable adapters, but not excellent...
Advantages: Reliable, lot of features
Disadvantages: Problems when installing on Win98 and WinMe
...ready (the third slot on the card, but you ask the vendor if that specific card is)
- Integrated Ethernet LAN, modem and telephone handset pass-through connectors provide reliable cable-free connectivity
?16 bit
- PC Card detects both 10 and 100 Mbps Ethernet through a single connector for faster performance
- Dimensions(WxDxH)/Weight-86 x 54 x 10.5 mm/36 g
- Hot-swappable (you can just plug it into the card slot and the system will see it, but I recommend to do this with a Win2000 or WinXP)
- System Requirements - IBM OS/2, Microsoft Windows NT 4.0, Microsoft Windows 3.x/95/98/2000/XP.
2. Xircom® RealPort CardBus Ethernet 10/100+Modem 56 GlobalACCESS (RBEM56G-100)
This card has THE SAME specs (except the fact that it is a 32 bits card, making it faster than its ?sister? + it has the power saving feature...

Netgear WGR614 54 Mbps Wireless Router
Advantages: Easy setup, great customer support, good price
Disadvantages: None
...In short: Excellent router, easy to set up and good support from Netgear.
I bought this modem router from Ebay to set up a wireless home network. Depsite paying AOL money each month and seeing new customers getting this router for free we were told that we would still have to purchase it separately. As this was one of the AOL compatible routers I plumped for it due to Netgear's good name.
The router was installed easyily and using AOL software from their site my main computer was up and running using an ethernet cable. We did have a couple of problems setting up our two laptops to work wirelessly but one short call to Netgear and that was all sorted out. If you don't have laptops with built in wireless capability I would recommend getting the compatible wireless adapters from Netgear, these also are installed very easily. Even...

Fancy 25Mbps+ Broadband.. One Day you'll get it.
Advantages: Good Realiability and Future Proof.
Disadvantages: People Mis-understanding the Product.
...with any Operating System that can initiate a PPPoE comunication with it. So this means it will work with Windows, Mac, Linux and Unix or any other operating systems. I have mine working with my m0n0wall router and it is an excellent combination.
But Linksys have gone one further and included a USB interface for people how do wish to use USB, this is nice to have but I would recommend you only use the Ethernet Interface because it is better.
The biggest selling point is its ability to support up to ADSL2+ connections, so that includes normal ADSL and ADSL2. In the UK ADSL2 is only just being trialed but it will come to everybody and when it does if you have this you will be ready to take advantage of it. So maybe in a Year or two you will be enjoying the Internet at 25Mbps.
So enought about what its supposed to do, does it do it well...

Networking solutions for laptops
Advantages: compact, relatively cheap
Disadvantages: takes up 2 PCMCIA slots
...Back in the days when laptops were not built with on board network ports, PCMCIA was the only way to add a laptop to a conventional ethernet network. I bought my xircom card from a computer fair for just £20, back when they were a rareity. I got home and hooked it up, only to find although it advertises only using one PCMCIA slot, it actually takes up the room of two on most laptops. However, this prevents needing a short jumper wire from the card, the network cable just goes straight into the end of the card. A great feature is the two status lights on the top of the card which can be seen when the card is in use. One for connectivity, and another for traffic. This is especially useful if you are having troubles with your network. Th drivers for the card come included with windows 2000, however i had to download them for windows...

OCR - Readiris Pro 10.0
Advantages: Very accurate with printed media
Disadvantages: Not very accurate with reading handwritten documents
...I am a big fan of OCR software and find that on occasions it can be very useful. OCR stands for Optical Character Recognition, and these types of applications are used for converting printed documents into editable documents on your screen.
I recently bought Readiris Pro 10.0 and can truly say that this version is a whole lot better than the previous version, which did not have a very high success rate. Readiris Pro 10.0 now supports a huge range of languages - 117 in total! Ranging from Afaan Oromo right through to Zulu. once text has been recognised by the software, you can save it in 14 different text formats and six different image formats. The new version also has support for the recognition of barcodes.
As anybody who uses OCR software will tell you, the key most important attribute of the software must be the accuracy of its...

Over priced
Advantages: Plug and Play
Disadvantages: Not worth the money
...When setting up a network in my house I wanted to share everything over a LAN and also split the broadband between the network. The initial problem I had was that the broadband connection to the hub has to be an Ethernet cable. This is not too much of a problem if you are using ntl broadband. If you are using bt broadband the modem comes with only a USB connection which you cannot change. Therefore the broadband could not be easily shared using the hub like I thought. The hub itself although quite stylish was large and oddly shaped and hard to accommodate in an already cluttered environment. It was however shape do that it could be attached to other belkin products in a quite nice and interesting way. Unfortunately if you don?t own any other belkin networking appliances the shape is pointless.
When the cabling was sorted out...

WG602 54 Mbps Wireless Access Point
Advantages: Good features, repeater and bridging modes
Disadvantages: Minor installation problem
...addresses (the unique address every piece of networking hardware has) and setting the mode to repeater instead of access point. Once this was done, the second access point was unplugged from the LAN and taken downstairs to the first floor. As its job was to simply repeat, it could be stuffed out the way on its own with the only connection being the power supply unit.
At this point, the theory was that data would go from the network to the first WG602 via a network cable, be transmitted wirelessly out into the ether where the second standalone WG602 would pick up the signal and repeat it onwards at full strength. The PC downstairs should then get a better signal as it was receiving from a unit only one floor away, not two.
Happily, it worked first time with the destination PC showing between 95 and 100% signal strength instead of the 30...

Easy as pie - if you can cook
Advantages: Cheap and easy to install cards
Disadvantages: No backup, you need to know what your doing
...When I bought this kit I had a very specific intention in mind, data transfer between my two home PCs, and possibly modem sharing, simple idea, should be easy to do. Or so I thought Well I toddled off to my local PCWorld to see what they had to offer. Decided against the wireless option as too expensive for what I wanted and opted for a PCI card kit. From what I could tell the ones suitable for what I wanted differed only in price so I decided on a network kit with a 5 port switch (for future expansion). And being something of a cheapskate I went for the cheapest one there, the PC Line 10/100 Networking Kit for the princely sum of £49.99.
The kit contains a switch hub, 2 x 10/100 PCI Ethernet LAN cards, 2 x 5m cables, a user guide and driver disk. The user guide looks gratifyingly substantial, until you realise that the majority...
