A career in SALT?

Advantages: Excellent book with lots of relevent information
Disadvantages: None!

...As many of you know I'm going to university in September, to study a degree in Speech and Language Therapy. When I was at the Open Day at De Montfort University, one of the lecturers recommended this book and I am so glad she did. It was also recommended at the Newcastle University Open Day, but by this time I already had the book! * "The role of a speech and language therapist (SALT) is to assess and treat speech, language and communication problems in people of all ages to enable them to communicate to the best of their ability. They may also work with people who have eating and swallowing problems." NHS Careers* The book is written by Jannet A Wright and Myra Kersner whom have both worked as SALT's. It is written for anyone who is interested in a career as a speech and language therapist. I ordered the book on 22nd February...

Recruitment Agencies - (Is it worth signing up?)

Advantages: Takes the hassle out of job searching
Disadvantages: lots of things - see review

... Recruitment Agencies  I have been working in Australia now for 5 months and have been moving around quite a lot so the best type of work to suit me was temping work. This as far as I can see can only be gotten through recruitment agencies unless you are very lucky to find something else. I am trained in administration in the fianance sector so office work was what I wanted to do as I knew it well. When looking for a job anywhere in the world through recruitment agencies it is best to sign up with as many as you possibly can. Some companies use the same recruitment agencies over and over again and some specialise in certain areas, but unless you are signed up with them the job will not come looking for you. **HOW TO SIGN UP WITH AN AGENCY** Ok so you have decided you want a job and generally you...

Ciao The Careers Advisor

Advantages: Interesting
Disadvantages: none

...The Education and Careers section I ciao is probably one of the most friendly and competitive sections on Ciao! Education & Careers covers 4 main sub sections, Higher/Further education, Careers and placements, Gap Years & Alternative Activities and finally Books and guides. The Higher & further education section basically is competitive amongst those who love their university I know I have written on praising Liverpool University. As well as this there are some valuable opinions on people that have left different universities and why definitely worth a read if you are making the move in the next year. Not so popular in this section is reviews of specific courses at university but who wants to write about there course there are so many more interesting things to write about university life. This section also contains valuable...

Not only and agency

Advantages: Great welcome, always happy to help, always only a call away, always there and on the case to find you work asap.
Disadvantages: none

...In my time I have tried all agencies, Adecco, Blue Arrow, Anne Jagger, Select, First Personal, the job centre and I have found out of all of them Brook Street have been the best, although I never got a placement through them the consultant I had was always trying his hardest to find me a joband whenever he arranged any interviews for me he always got me to come in so he could give me some interview advice and kind of interviewed me himself and gave me some feed back and really prepared me for my interviews. No other agency has gone this far for me. They all give you the details over the phone or via post. Looking for work can be a stressful time and quite difficult, especially if you have to support yourself or a family. My tip is to register with as many agencies as possible let them know three important things which are the type...

Review of Brook Street - Recruiment Agency

Recruitment agencies, be careful

Advantages: Good agencies are worth their weight in gold.
Disadvantages: Bad agencies can mess up your career.

...I'm sure that this is entirely the wrong category for this, but here is my experience of recruitment and contract consultancies. 80% of them are good, 20% are cowboys. The latter can really mess you up and the former sometimes swap CVs with the latter. The logic is something like this, a reputable agency has your CV for about six months. If you haven't updated it, they won't use it any more (excellent) so they sell it on to people who aren't so fussy. The less-fussy agencies might use it for another six months, and then pass it on again. I last decided to look for a new job in July 1999, when I started sending my CV to some web based agencies. I had a surge of interest and lots of phonecalls and started a job in November. I love the new job and I am staying put. For the first six months, I got a lot of phone calls from reputable...

Review of Member Advice on Career Decisions

Recruitment agencies

Advantages: Employers prefer them
Disadvantages: They lie

...I have tried most of them in my time, having had several periods of unemployment, and I cannot say I've ever encountered one I could trust. They all come at you as the best, most caring, compassionate answer to your job-hunting prayers, and they are completely free to boot. Which ought to start alarm-bells ringing in these money-grubbing times. Of course they're free - to you, because you, the job-seeker (as we are expected to refer to ourselves now) are the fodder. The client is charged, though, and quite heavily, for your services, whereas you are paid at the minimum of - what is it now, following the latest Brownian orgasm of glad-handouts : £4.20 an hour? Agencies charge an average of £7.50 for you. Which most employers would rather pay than take you on full-time at £7 : because they can dump a temp in a moment, whereas there...

Review of Brook Street - Recruiment Agency

Getting a Job through an agency -advice!!!!

Advantages: Fast, Cover lots of jobs
Disadvantages: Be careful of the information they give you.

...and emails about the same vacancies. Also agencies like the fact that they be the sole agency with your CV, so negotiate with them, tell them that you will see how they perform over the next month and that you won?t register with anyone else until you see what they come up with. Sometimes this is a much better incentive to make an agency work harder on your behalf than if they know you have registered with every agency under the sun and it is not worth their while to compete with that. I am no longer in the recruitment industry and have had a complete career change, so if you want a little independent advice feel free to drop by my guest book and leave me a message. Please bear in mind however that the information in this review is purely based on my opinion and does not represent all agency practice. Indeed there are good agencies out there...

the Careers office from hell

Advantages: Set me up with training providers
Disadvantages: Annoying as hell

...I was just toddling around town in my usual unemployed way. Took a visit to the job centre, terrible service as usual and I decided to take a trip down to my local careers office. Thought they could help me. Got there and what a nightmare I had over the space of 3 months. I talked to at least 5 different careers advisors who I had to repeat all the same information to and got me so wound up. They were not one bit helpful for me and 3 months later I still had no job. After a very long time they set me up with some training providers which were a lot more helpful - but, alas! I still look for a job. Why are't careers services more helpful? and why to careers advisors not really give a s*** about us and what we want?...

Network Agencies- A good experiance

Advantages: Wide spread over North London + Reliable staff
Disadvantages: Not open on Sundays

...My experiance with Network Agencies has been a good one. I have rented from many estate agencies and found that the independant ones like Network Agencies are the best when it comes to renting. I like the fact that they are a family run business, the staff are very helpful and constantly busy which is very important with this kind of work as it is nice to feel appreciated, they made me feel like they really wanted to help me which they did. In terms of maintenance problems, i would call them up if i had any doubts of worries and they would arrange to come out promply and rectify the situation, i never had to wait too long for them to come, of course Moving in and out of their property was very easy, they are very professional yet so down to earth, and they really helped me with some problems i was going through. I maintained...

CATTY CAREER GIRLS

Advantages: DETAILED DESCRIPTIONS
Disadvantages: NONE

...in and finds Rowena and her boyfriend. This is the start of a bitter feud, the women part and start their lives out side of college, both being hugely successfullin their respective careers. And soon enough the gloves come off and war starts between the girls, each trying to ruin the other. I found that once i got into the book i couldnt put it down and finished it very quickly. Her descriptive writing is superb and she makes you feel extremely close to the characters, through-out reading i was always changing my mind about who's side i was on and who was in the right or wrong. As well as the career girls fighting, they both had very strong relationships though out, with powerfull men who would do anything for them. Their relationships were exciting with good and bad patches, which make you laugh and cry. i found it a wonderfull...
