Dishwater or British pride? (Carling Lager)

...I like beer, as do many of us, but after a recent holiday in Belgium I have come back a bit of a beer snob. The beer in Belgium (mainstream beer too) is wonderful, full of rich flavours and has a decent kick to it which is different to many mainstream beers found in the UK. I know you can get good Real Ales in the UK but I thought I would look at a selection of the more popular beers you can get easily throughout the UK starting with Carling. The tin of carling I have chilling in my fridge contains 440ml of 4% vol beer and cost me £1.09. The tin is black and white and boasts that Carling is made with British barley and has been for over 30 years, the beer is made from 100% British barley and that the beer offers a complete flavour and refreshment for all. True Picture Book Classic (The Very Hungry Caterpillar - E Carle)

Advantages: great text, artwork and story
Disadvantages: none

...This book is a true children's classic - and rightly so. I am not normally fan of Eric Carle, despite his perennial popularity and great hype, but this one is a winner: I suspect that all his fame was built on this one book. I don't know what it is about caterpillar themed books that appeals so much, although I suppose it must be the (unbearable, obviously) suspense of transformation, and the contrast between wiggly, faintly repulsive caterpillar, crawling on the ground or on the plants, and the beauty that is a butterfly, who, on top of everything, also can fly! Carle's story chronicles a week in a life one one caterpillar who goes on a rampage devouring huge quantities of fruit (in fact, there is a method to that, as it eats one on Monday, two on Tuesday etc). The book brims with concepts and educational opportunities...

CARLING'S not my Darling

Advantages: It's wet and it's cheap
Disadvantages: Pretty bland

...Remember those adverts on the telly? The ones where the buxom blond barmaid leans over the bar, displaying her ample assets for easy ogling by completely male clientele in a dingy, smoky pub, then smiles sweetly as the order is shouted, "HEY MABEL! BLACK LABEL!" Mabel didn't have a speaking part, but at the end of the commercial, she gave the TV viewers a friendly wink (quick spell check - yep, that's wink). You don't remember? Well you wouldn't. Unless you're of an age that as a youngster, you thought feminism was some sort of kinky game where you dressed up in your mother's clothes (or was that just me!) - and you watched these ads in glorious monochrome. It didn't matter that the CARLING* logo was black on white - the TV only had one other colour anyway.....grey. But that was long ago and advertising trends have changed...

I bet I drink Carling Black Label

Advantages: It's Beer
Disadvantages: Hangovers (if you have to stop drinking)

...As a kid I didn't know any better. When I first started hitting the pubs I used to drink bottles of K cider, pints of mild & bitter. I even, and I'm kind of ashamed to admit this, bought the odd half every now & then. It's not something I'm proud of. There's nothing wrong with bitters if you're middle-aged & have a beard, cider is also fine if you have leanings in that direction and if you're a pensioner and can still find it then drink mild by all means but if you're a youngish man (or lady in some more relaxed areas of the country) then lager should be the alcoholic beverage of choice. The best selling lager in the UK is Carling and in my opinion it's the only one that tastes correct from a can or a glass. What a difference a Carling Makes

Advantages: Crisp and refreshing, gettin pissed is allways fun too.
Disadvantages: Not very nice if served warm, pricey in some establishments. Not as nice when out of a Can.

Mine's a Carling

Advantages: Tastes great, won't make you too ill, quite cheap.
Disadvantages: If you want something strong it's not for you.
