Dishwater or British pride? (Carling Lager)

Advantages: Cheap.
Disadvantages: Weak watery taste.

...I like beer, as do many of us, but after a recent holiday in Belgium I have come back a bit of a beer snob. The beer in Belgium (mainstream beer too) is wonderful, full of rich flavours and has a decent kick to it which is different to many mainstream beers found in the UK. I know you can get good Real Ales in the UK but I thought I would look at a selection of the more popular beers you can get easily throughout the UK starting with Carling. The tin of carling I have chilling in my fridge contains 440ml of 4% vol beer and cost me £1.09. The tin is black and white and boasts that Carling is made with British barley and has been for over 30 years, the beer is made from 100% British barley and that the beer offers a complete flavour and refreshment for all. True Picture Book Classic (The Very Hungry Caterpillar - E Carle)

Advantages: great text, artwork and story

...This book is a true children's classic - and rightly so. I am not normally fan of Eric Carle, despite his perennial popularity and great hype, but this one is a winner: I suspect that all his fame was built on this one book. I don't know what it is about caterpillar themed books that appeals so much, although I suppose it must be the (unbearable, obviously) suspense of transformation, and the contrast between wiggly, faintly repulsive caterpillar, crawling on the ground or on the plants, and the beauty that is a butterfly, who, on top of everything, also can fly! Carle's story chronicles a week in a life one one caterpillar who goes on a rampage devouring huge quantities of fruit (in fact, there is a method to that, as it eats one on Monday, two on Tuesday etc). Creaking about in my back passage

...a bit of Googling I came across the Carl Lewis Glide Trainer and found that Amazon are selling it for £79.99 with free Supersaver p&p although I paid extra for next day delivery. If you pop along to the actual Carl Lewis website, you'll see the machine is being sold for £84.50. I then cashed £35 of survey reward vouchers and placed the order. Five previous purchasers had left small reviews, 2 of which were negative so I crossed my fingers and hoped for the best. Assembly When I finally got the machine delivered by the courier company which could be a review in itself and proves that sometimes, shouting and being downright rude to people who lie does actually work - I found much to my relief that the machine is about 95% assembled. CARLING'S not my Darling

Advantages: It's wet and it's cheap
Disadvantages: Pretty bland

The ones where the buxom blond barmaid leans over the bar, displaying her ample assets for easy ogling by completely male clientele in a dingy, smoky pub, then smiles sweetly as the order is shouted, "HEY MABEL! BLACK LABEL!" Mabel didn't have a speaking part, but at the end of the commercial, she gave the TV viewers a friendly wink (quick spell check - yep, that's wink). You don't remember? Well you wouldn't. Unless you're of an age that as a youngster, you thought feminism was some sort of kinky game where you dressed up in your mother's clothes (or was that just me!) - and you watched these ads in glorious monochrome. It didn't matter that the CARLING* logo was black on white - the TV only had one other colour anyway.....grey. But that was long ago and advertising trends have changed...
