Advantages: Friendly staff, modern decor, lots of handy facilities, great location
Disadvantages: Rooms are a bit on the small side and cramped

...the best available double room when we got to the hotel. The hotel that we had booked was the four star 'Jolly Carlton'. I had a look on the internet and it seemed wonderful. We were told that check in wasn't until 2pm, but when we arrived in Amsterdam in the morning, we though that we would go to the hotel to see if we could leave our luggage there so we didn't have to drag it around the city until 2pm. The hotel is about a 15 minute walk from the central station, which we managed no problem, even with our luggage. If you don't want to walk then there are also several trams you can take, either from the central station or from the centre of the town, though it really isn't that far and it is a fairly flat road all the way, and it means you can window shop as you walk! Advantages: Full service 5 star hotel. Good price point. Excellent service and luxury. Butler service.
Disadvantages: No asian influence. More bar/restaurant choice elsewhere.

Carlton Bilbao - another travellers tale!

Advantages: Opulent, near the Guggenheim, best in town
Disadvantages: only that there's not more reason to go more often

...The first time I stayed at the Carlton it was entirely accidental. I had flown from Madrid to Bilbao with a Spanish colleague probably 10 years ago and our flight was so late that the hotel where we had bookings had given our rooms away to someone else. It was late, we were tired and grouchy and they offered to find us 2 rooms somewhere else. The Carlton - being the best (and most expensive) hotel in town - had two rooms. We rolled up in the wee small hours of the morning, paid an arm, a leg and a few other body parts and spent no more than about 6 hours in our rooms before heading off in the morning. ...Carlton has returned with her second album after a long break from the spotlight. The longevity of the recording process definitely shows on the record. It is clear to see that Carlton has matured immensely during her break and her songs now contain a great deal of hindsight, dealing with growing up, becoming a woman and gaining independence from her family. The stand out tracks for me are definitely tracks 2,3 and 4. 'Who's To Say' has been on repeat for weeks. 'Annie' is the most heart-wrenching song, written for a young dying girl. 'San Francisco' is probably the most upbeat and catchy song. Along with the hit single White Houses and catchy 'Private Radio' it makes for a great album. Advantages: Very clean; has an ATM in the lobby; polite and helpful English-speaking reception staff

...We stayed one night at the Carlton Hotel, Damascus recently on a whistlestop (independent, rather than organised) tour of Syria. Hotel reservations for the trip had been made on our behalf by a Syrian travel agency, who assured us that accommodation had been booked but did not actually advise the names of the specific hotels, so we had been unable to do any "checking up" in advance. Having spent the previous night in a beautiful hotel in the centre of old Aleppo (the Dar Maria, located in sympathetically restored old houses with lovely courtyards, fountains etc), I was very disappointed with both the run-of-the-mill appearance and the location of the Damascus Carlton: set slightly back off a busy main road, in a commercial/residential area some distance from the interesting parts of the city. ...Just returned from staying at Carlton Housewith my wife for our wedding anniversary. This place is fantastic, it really is. Have stayed in York on other occasions and always tend to pay over the odds hoping money brings service. The Carlton although not cheap is fantastic value for money and provides the quality of service expected from the top end hotels. Although in the guest house category I would class this place as a hotel with the added value of that special guest house service. Arrival was greeted by friendly smile, explanation of facilities, room, parking and location. Advantages: Light, beautifully weighted racket

...This was the fourth Carlton racket I came to own and the most expensive. The previous two Carlton rackets had been great rackets, perfectly balanced and light. Unfortunately both these two rackets had suffered from what Iam now coming to believe is the curse of Carlton. They both broke within three months of receiving them, the first snapped and the second cracked. The strange thing about the last of these rackets is that it was a replacement racket for the previous one which Carlton said had been faulty. ...When choosing a hotel in Amsterdam the traveller is faced with a multitude of choices and you're never sure exactly which hotel is good or bad. I hope this opinion helps to clear the confusion. We booked the Hotel Jolly Carlton from the internet where we got an excellent deal. The Hotel Jolly Carlton is owned by an Italian chain of hotels which have properties throughout Europe. It is situated right next to the Singel Flower Market and some of the rooms are lucky enough to overlook the Muntplein which chimes each hour on the hour 24 hours a day.
