...the best available double room when we got to the hotel. The hotel that we had booked was the four star 'Jolly Carlton'. I had a look on the internet and it seemed wonderful. We were told that check in wasn't until 2pm, but when we arrived in Amsterdam in the morning, we though that we would go to the hotel to see if we could leave our luggage there so we didn't have to drag it around the city until 2pm. The hotel is about a 15 minute walk from the central station, which we managed no problem, even with our luggage. If you don't want to walk then there are also several trams you can take, either from the central station or from the centre of the town, though it really isn't that far and it is a fairly flat road all the way, and it means you can window shop as you walk! Carlton Bilbao - another travellers tale!

...The first time I stayed at the Carlton it was entirely accidental. I had flown from Madrid to Bilbao with a Spanish colleague probably 10 years ago and our flight was so late that the hotel where we had bookings had given our rooms away to someone else. It was late, we were tired and grouchy and they offered to find us 2 rooms somewhere else. The Carlton - being the best (and most expensive) hotel in town - had two rooms. We rolled up in the wee small hours of the morning, paid an arm, a leg and a few other body parts and spent no more than about 6 hours in our rooms before heading off in the morning. The Carlton - not quite as good as it sounds, for us anyway

Advantages: Very clean; has an ATM in the lobby; polite and helpful English-speaking reception staff
Disadvantages: No restaurants within easy reach; 25% charged on top of advertised food and drink prices

...We stayed one night at the Carlton Hotel, Damascus recently on a whistlestop (independent, rather than organised) tour of Syria. Hotel reservations for the trip had been made on our behalf by a Syrian travel agency, who assured us that accommodation had been booked but did not actually advise the names of the specific hotels, so we had been unable to do any "checking up" in advance. Having spent the previous night in a beautiful hotel in the centre of old Aleppo (the Dar Maria, located in sympathetically restored old houses with lovely courtyards, fountains etc), I was very disappointed with both the run-of-the-mill appearance and the location of the Damascus Carlton: set slightly back off a busy main road, in a commercial/residential area some distance from the interesting parts of the city. ...Just returned from staying at Carlton Housewith my wife for our wedding anniversary. This place is fantastic, it really is. Have stayed in York on other occasions and always tend to pay over the odds hoping money brings service. The Carlton although not cheap is fantastic value for money and provides the quality of service expected from the top end hotels. Although in the guest house category I would class this place as a hotel with the added value of that special guest house service. ...When choosing a hotel in Amsterdam the traveller is faced with a multitude of choices and you're never sure exactly which hotel is good or bad. I hope this opinion helps to clear the confusion. We booked the Hotel Jolly Carlton from the internet where we got an excellent deal. The Hotel Jolly Carlton is owned by an Italian chain of hotels which have properties throughout Europe. It is situated right next to the Singel Flower Market and some of the rooms are lucky enough to overlook the Muntplein which chimes each hour on the hour 24 hours a day. ...The hotel is situated in the Melbourne Swanston area on one of the main shopping avenues. It was advertised in the "Aussie Backpacker" magazine, so I assumed it would be suitable for a weekend stay in the city as part of a backpacking trip around Australia. What a mistake! We had unfortunately just handed over our payment when I noticed a "No refunds on accomodation" sign. When we went upstairs the hotel looked like a set from the NYPD Blue Tv show. It was basically a drop in centre for all of the local drunks and prostitutes. One of their selling points was a 24hr bar, the music from which could be heard throughout the hotel until 5am. The toilets were worse than the "worse toilet in the World" scene from "Trainspotting", and was the only place in Australia I saw a cockroach. When we checked out, the bar boucers blocked...
