...It's an unusual crime novel these days that has me guessing until the very end so it was a rare pleasure to read Caro Ramsay's "Singing to the Dead" and find a plot stuffed to the limit with twists and turns and characters I found genuinely engaging and wanted to know more about. While Christmas is supposed to be a time of goodwill to all, the arrival of a new boss in Glasgow's Partickhill police station divides the already depleted team. Just when everyone is thinking of winding down, a series of investigations stretch the officers to the limit. The apparently straightforward death of a pensioner in an accidental house fire turns out to be something much more serious and threatens to overshadow the disappearance of two young boys in separate incidents. How to survive a mid-life crisis!

...Caro Fraser has been a favourite author of mine for quite a few years now. In her books, she usually writes about a set of barristers who all work together in London. However, occasionally, she tends to write a 'one off' type of novel with different characters and nothing to do with the law! 'A World Apart' is one of these 'one offs'. The story centres on Mark Mason, a forty something businessman who appears to be going through a midlife crisis. He has been married to his wife Paula for about half his life, and they have two almost grown up sons. He also is partner in a successful waste compacting company. So, on the surface it appears that life is very good for Mark! However, appearances can be deceptive. Beneath the successful exterior, Mark is gradually feeling a sense of panic. Nothing corrupt about this novel!

...'Breath of Corruption' is the thirteenth book written by Caro Fraser and is the seventh book in her Caper Court series. All of the books in this series are about a group of barristers working out of the same set of chambers. It is hardly surprising that she writes about the law in her novels as she herself read law and was called to the bar in 1979. If you are interested in the way the legal system works but also like a very good story then these novels are just the thing. From a quote from the Daily Record they are described as 'the thinking woman's chicklit!' All of the Caper Court novels are stand alone stories but there are some references to previous events which makes me think that although you don't need to have read the previous books, it probably would contribute to your overall enjoyment if you had! Top of the pops it aint

Our music collection has rag-time Jazz, post war Blues, early Dylan, Franz Ferdinand, Meatloaf, Pavarotti, Bob Marley, Santana and much, much more. Review of Familiar Rooms in Darkness - Caro Fraser

Truth is it's great!

Advantages: Fab story, great characters, funny, well written

...Caro and Benedict were happily settled in the village of Churchminster, but Benedict's job means they have to move to London, something Caro isn't too keen on. They find them in the small mews that Benedict owns, and Caro soon grows to love life in the mews and her neighbours too. There's Sebastien and Klaus, recluse Rowena who has never been seen, and Saffron and Velda, a niece and aunt. Review of Poetry

An unsatisfying bitter disappointment.

Advantages: Chocolate descriptions.
Disadvantages: Everything else.

...I seem to be the only person in the world who did not like this book. Yes, the chocolate descriptions were mouth watering, but I found all the people in it to be caricatures, especially Caro and Armande. I saw absolutely nothing special or clever about Armande and the fact that she was supposed to be perceived that way never occured to me, until Harris felt obliged to step in and point it out. However the characters weren't what disappointed me most, it was the ending. As the plot nears Easter Sunday the tension between Reynaud and Vianne mounts and it is inevitable that there will be some sort of climax. There isn't. I felt sure there would be some sort of confrontation, but the book just limped out and left me very unsatisfied....
